Digitrax just released their newest DCC starter system, the Zephyr Express. The MSRP is $235 (I paid less than MSRP) and these are now available. Please enjoy the unboxing and review. For more information, please visit: www.digitrax.com/products/star...
NOTE: You will notice a flickering of the lights on the backlit keypad. That is an illusion created by the frame rate of my camcorder, you cannot see it to the naked eye.
The information and views shared in this video are solely the opinion of the creator. This video is not a paid endorsement for this product. I purchased this product and wanted to share my experiences.

I've been looking for a DCC system that would easily allow me to consist my locomotives and after watching this video, I'm confident that this new starter set will help me achieve this on my layout. I'm going to give this starter system a shot! Thank you so much for a helpful and informational video on this brand new starter set!

Thanks, Harry! Yes, you will be able to consist locomotives with this starter set. Just remember this is a 3amp unit. The latest HO sound decoders (e.g., a Tsunami 2 diesel sound decoder) pull ~ 1 amp of current. You will only be able to run 3 sound locomotives without maxing out the command station. Non-sound decoders typically draw less so you can run a few more non-sound. Just making sure you know the limitations of this system.

Well done video very informative and comprehensive showing of this cool system. Many arguments persist about the best DCC system but from what I've seen actually using all of them is it's just about looks lol. Digitrax even has hand help controllers that will plug into this for those thinking NCE has a 1 up on this but it's all similar. The newr version of this is much better with a hand held device as well but costs twice as much, this is still the best DCC starter set I've seen for the money.

A very helpful video, thanks for taking the time to go through this - especially for those of us who are moving into the DCC world. I would love to watch more of your video's - your layout looks fantastic and this video was very helpful but I just can't get past the high EQ settings, even when I adjust the EQ on my laptop. It's not distorted, it's just too dry and crackly which, for me, makes it "eye-twitchingly" unlistenable and it gives the trains a hissing quality. I played it for my wife, her reaction: "So what? It doesn't bother me , plus he's got lots of views, lots of subscribers and clearly knows what he's talking about, get over it!"

Great video and very helpful, but 1 VERY IMPORTANT NOTE for those DCC newbies like me viewing this. When you go to program your train address, make sure the track is power button is OFF! I lost about 90 minutes trying to program in a loco number and it would not write the new address. Rewound this video about 50 times and said “yes, I’m doing everything exactly as he is”. But then I noticed as you go to program the video has a blip and when you restart on the programming instructions the track status & power lights are off, but there’s no mention of turning the track power off. So you need to be on the programming track, but the track power needs to be off. As soon as I shut off the track power and hit the write key, it beeped like 3 times, the engine inched forward with each beep, then it completed successfully.

Awesome review! I have a Zephyr Extra, this looks like a nice upgraded version! Look forward to seeing the new layout! Did you say it was gonna be a 1' x 3' layout? 1x3 isnt much for switching operations, although definetly doable. Might I suggest a 1x5 switching layout with a 1 or 2 foot staging cassette? Two switches and 4 or 5 carspots can make for some interesting switching ops. (Use carspots!) Plus, you would still be able to show all the other things you want to do with It! Just my 2 cents. Isaac
@ck7813
@ck7813 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Isaac. I probably should clarify, yes I am building a layout but it is intended to be more of a demonstration unit rather than a functional layout. Yes, it will certainly have the ability to run trains and do some limited switching of cars, but it is more intended to serve as a “how to” for people to see that utilizing DCC to its full potential is not as difficult as it might initially appear. I am afraid it is gets much bigger than 3’ to 4’, it will become big and clumsy to move and store. I still have my “real” layout to have more extensive ops sessions.

I've connected wires for programming onto track and placed train on track. Track power enabled and try to read the current info but it won't read. I'm wondering if the trains are compatible. How can you check? When pressing read option the train does make noise and lights come on but can't read. I try and program the number in but that doesn't work either. Either the trains are not compatible or the dcs52 is faulty. Can't think of anything else to try? Trains work with the old unique to train controllers.

Hi David. I don't know how much help I will be. The main question is what type of locomotives does your friend have, meaning, what year were there made, the manufacturer (Athearn, Intermountain, etc.) and if they are sound units or not. The National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) has standards that make DCC decoders and systems compatible no matter what brands you are using. Your best bet now would be to contact Digitrax support through their webpage.

@ck7813
@ck7813 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Krypton, I don’t know if I am completely understanding your question. When I made this video, there was a known issues with the Firmware of the DCS 52 which resulted in an erroneous operation of one of the function keys (F9). If your system is new, that should have been solved for by the factory before it shipped. If you are typing in the address of your locomotive, you need to confirm that the locomotive is programmed for that address (e.g., in my video it is 8120). If the locomotive address has not be programmed, try entering an address of 3 (hit the loco key, type 3, hit the loco key) and try it. If you know the locomotive works on a different DCC system, then you might have your system setup incorrectly (ensure your RAIL A and RAIL B outputs are properly connected). If you confirm that it is setup correct, then it is likely an issue with the Zephyr in which case you will need to contact Digitrax Support.

@@johncanillas8939 No problem glad to share what I have learned via my own foray into DCC, but yes you can simply remove the original connector and directly connect to Rail A and Rail B ports (wire orientation does not matter). You also have the option of using the Kato terminal adapter part#:KAT24843 with the 3 way adapter Part#:kat24827, this will allow you to connect multiple feeder track without chopping the plugs. You will still need to cut off the original power supply contacts on the "terminal adapter" since you need raw wire to feed into the zephyr plug. John Wilson Thanks, John. If you wired everything according to the instructions, there will not be power going to the programming track. It is specifically designed to program decoders and you cannot run locomotives on it. To know if it works or not, put a decoder on it and try to read a CV (the manual will instruct you on how to read a CV). If it reads the CV, you have it hooked up correctly.

@ck7813
@ck7813 3 жыл бұрын
I will do my best to answer your questions. For running multiple locomotives, technically yes, you can run more than one; however, you only have one throttle knob so you only have control over one locomotive at a time. To run two, you would need to start one locomotive, leave it run, select a second locomotive and run it. The problem is, you have no control over the first locomotive until your reselect it. This would work fine if you just wanted to run it at a constant speed around a loop where there is no chance of a collision. Otherwise, to run and control more than one locomotive, you would need an additional Throttle, which Digitrax sells (I would recommend the UT6, I have a review of that throttle on my page). Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of European models. It likely will depend on the decoder in the locomotive. Digitrax does produces products for Europe, the best advice I can give is to contact Digitrax Help Desk for assistance.
@poteznyczar
@poteznyczar 3 жыл бұрын
@@ck7813 thank you very very much for responding, which cleared many things up. about the UT6 can i just plug that into the zephyr like you did with your DT42 hand throttle using the loco net cable? i assume the cable is already connected to any throttle that you buy.
@ck7813
@ck7813 3 жыл бұрын
@@poteznyczar Correct, the UT6 can plug directly into the back of the Zephyr Express. The UT6 comes with a Loconet cable so you will have everything you need. You can purchase a UP5 (utility panel) which is a port to plug in a throttle, but that connects directly to the Zephyr via a Loconet cable. The UP5 is needed when you want to have a throttle plug in port a distance away from your control panel.

Hi Stephen, you technically don’t set the speed settings with the DCS52. All of the speed settings are made to changes on the locomotive’s decoder. You can certainly use the DCS52 to program decoders but there are no changes you make to the actual command station. There are several videos and articles on adjusting speed settings for the various decoders (ESU, Tsunami, etc.). Digitrax has a great step-by-step guide that starts on page 26 of the Zephyr express manual (you can get the manual on their webpage if you misplaced your copy). Another possibility is for the time you plan on programming, just unhook your two wires from Rail A and Rail B and connect them to Programming A and B, do your programming, and switch back. with the dcs52 can you have one train running around the mainline and another train shunting in the siding at the same time ?
@ck7813
@ck7813 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Clayton. In theory, yes you can run a train on the main while shunting with the following limitations. Since the DCS 52 only allows you to run one train at a time (one throttle knob), you would have to set the locomotive you want on the main to the active throttle address, get it moving as to whatever speed you want and leave it running while you select a different locomotive to be the active address. If you have a continuous loop, you could just let the train run on the outer loop but you wouldn’t have any direct controls over it until you re-select it as the active locomotive address. A possible solution is to check eBay for a Digitrax UT4 throttle (very basic throttle) which could be connected tot he DCS 52 so you have the ability to have two active addresses.

@@csxrailfanfoamer8118 Technically, you can run a DC locomotive with this system. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend it. You can get a DC throttle for the fraction of the price of a DCC starter set. I would recommend consulting the Zephyr Express manual (found in the downloads section of the Digitrax website). Running a non-DCC locomotive instructions are on page 8. Good luck.

Short answer, yes! Long answer is, it requires a Digitrax stationary decoder (e.g., a DS64 or SE8C) wired to a switch machine (e.g., a Tortoise slow motion machine). I am working on a video series that I will have posted on or near January 1 that will showcase this starter set controlling the turnouts. Stay tuned!

Hi Jeffrey. Do this at your own risk. There is a reset button on the back of the unit (see p. 37 of the Zephyr Express manual, you can find online at Digitrax website). If that don’t work set OpSw 40 to “closed”. You can find the OpSw instructions on p. 36 of the manual. If this all fails, contact Digitrax, you may need to send it in for repairs. Good luck and let me know if you get it fixed.

Hi Andrew, do you know what kind of decoder is in your F40PH? You need this info and you can check the decoder documentation (you can get this easily online) and see what CV controls the master volume and adjust it as described in this video. What brand is your locomotive? What year was it released? Is it the factory installed decoder or did someone install one after purchase? That is the critical info you need and once you have it, changing volume CV is easy.

Russell Loomis Hi Russell, I am having a bit of trouble understanding your questions so please feel reply if I don’t get your questions answered. Yes, you can program a 4 digit address right away, as long as your decoder supports it. (All of the newer decoders support 4 digit address). The F9 button situation needs to be addressed. I don’t know exactly what F9 does, I just know it doesn’t activate F9. Yours might have the updated firmware already if you just got your Zephyr (Digitrax updated the firmware before it left the factory). The only way to know is to activate F9 on a sound-equipped locomotive and see if it works. Hope this helps!

Does it differ much from Digitrax Zephyr Extra?
@ck7813
@ck7813 Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Greg. As far as running trains goes, no it is very similar to the Zephyr Extra. Everything else is an upgrade, the size of the buttons, the size of the LED screen, etc. In my opinion, it makes some things easier, like programming decoders. The menu is much more intuitive since more information can be displayed on the screen. If you have the choice between the two, I would get the Express. If you are running a Extra and are thinking of upgrading, you won’t notice a difference in how the trains run, just how you interact with the system.

Yes! There is a whole section in the manual (found on Digitrax’s website) about multiple unit (MU) consists. As with any consist originating from a command station, it is a “simple” consist meaning certain functions are only available on the lead locomotive. The main decoders like Soundtrax Tsunami and ESU Loksound support advance consisting which allows for more realistic operations. Google search advanced consisting for more info!

Thanks, Leo. Great question. DCC decoders have both a short address (between 0 and 127) and a long address (between 128 and 9999) and when you modify CVs, it determines if the DCC system is reading the short or long address. You can leave the “0003” as the short address but the DCC system will read the long address of 8120. They are controlled by two different CVs.

Would this work for HO EZ track ?
@ck7813
@ck7813 3 жыл бұрын
**Full disclaimer, I have not ever tried this so proceed at your own risk.**. Yes, the EZ track will work with any DCC system. If the track is in good shape and you have good electrical connectivity, it should be fine. The best option for trouble free DCC operation are feeder wires off of every 2-3 feet of track. Relying on one terminal connection on EZ track might not lead to reliable operation. The bottom line though is that it should work.

The power source seems too weak if you shall use bigger scale like 0. To use digital accessories you need external power source to avoid load on the track. Hi Russell, I do not have a video on how to program on the mainline with the DCS52. The instruction manual for the Zephyr Express describes the process on how to program on the main starting at the bottom of page 26 (top 27). You can find the manual online on the Digitrax website (go to downloads page then "manuals" then "starter set" and select the Zephyr Express. Another suggestion is to take a small piece of straight track with long feeders soldered to it and temporarily connect it to the programming inputs on the back of Zephyr, do your programming, and the unhook it until you need it again.

Unfortunate issue with this design is the new interface no longer mirrors their throttles. DCS 51 was a nice 'intro to digitrax' with a similar interface which eased newcomers into the 402/500 throttles; now they are completely different interfaces. Although throttles with this new interface would be a winner.

Daniel E. Markle Thanks, Daniel. You bring up a good point. The Digitrax interface was very similar between the old Zephyr and the 400/500 series throttles. From my perspective the new Zephyr Express interface is a massive upgrade and I wonder if this was a test run before introduced a new hand throttle. Time will tell....
