I have praying mantises in my yard as well. I’m in Southern California in zone 10a. I even found an egg case in one of my plants! As for insecticidal soap, this is what i found about how it works: Insecticidal soaps kill by suffocation, they appear to disrupt the cellular membranes of the insect, and they remove protective waxes that cover the insect, resulting in dehydration. Insecticidal soaps are also an effective leaf wash to remove honeydew, sooty mold, and other debris from leaves.

Thanks Janey for the info. I now know the fancy term for going out to squish the darn bugs eating my plants. I am going to tell my husband “ I am going out to do some mechanical pest control Honey.”

Great information, Thank you! Love the Beginning Gardeners Series. After witnessing a Praying Mantis take down a black widow, it has been my second favorite “Predator Insect”. Of course, Lady Bugs are number one. 😉

Wonderful information! We purchased labybugs and green lacewing larvae last year after aphids showed up in unprecedented numbers (😝) and were impressed with how effective they were! The ladybugs hung around much longer than expected too which was so kind of them lol 😆We also applied nematodes from Arbico Organics to help break the lifecycles of certain pests. Oh and I have tried the beer and saucer method for slug control ... it works LOL!

Oh interesting about the nematodes Rochelle! My neighbor has mentioned those a few times. You should do a video on it 😉 no seriously... lol!

We've been trying to use beneficial insects, barriers and natural cures. While I've wanted to "go nuclear" a few times but I can't. With the chickens, and us eating the food, I just can't use any chemicals, etc. Great video Janey!

@DigPlantWaterRepeat 2 жыл бұрын
No I can imagine that would be terrible for the chickens! I think your pollinator garden will definitely help attract the good bugs though!

Girl, Lady bugs saved me so much last year when I bought them for aphids. I’ll put them in my garden every year from now on. 🙌🏻 I also struggle with budworms and daily picked them out of my supertunias last year. I ended up using captain jacks and it saved me so much time. Great video!

I love beneficial insects! I'm usually too slow to manage pest control otherwise so I'm always grateful for the little workers in the garden, lol. We used the beer method, it works great! I used bowls and pressed them in the soil so the rim of the bowl was level with the soil, that way they kind of fell in. Our problem is that we never considered that the dog would drink it. 🤣 Thanks for another awesome video!

LOLOL Andrea and her drunk doggo! 🤣 I am definitely going to try the beer method just to see it in action. Ive had quite a few comments of people saying that it definitely works so I want to try it! (and will have to keep my dog away from it! 😜)

Good information, Janey. We used nasturtium as a pest (aphid) barrier last year, and it seemed to work well. I have a hard time killing anything, so I usually throw slugs over the fence, shhhhh don't tell Colleen 🤣🤣🤣🐌 or the neighbors!! Cheers Janey, btw it's snowing 😡❄️🤣

Budworms!! That's what ate my cabbage last year?? Thank you for this video, I'm heading out to the plant store today so this info comes in handy. My mother used to bury a cup or beer can in the garden to soil level and that's how they got rid of snails, it really does work and is safe. Great video!

They have arrived!!! I was watering my yard Saturday and there, on my mandevilla plant, were aphids. I first squished them with my gloved hand but realized there were too many so I grabbed my hose. I'm now trying to find live ladybugs but it might be too early and I'm nervous that the cold weather snap they are predicting for us to have this week might kill them so I'll keep an eye on the little buggers and squash or spray them until I can get ladybugs. Very informative video, Janey. Enjoy your Monday, I hope you have it off for President's Day.

Oh Lu!!!! Yuck!! I don’t think ladybugs are available yet! Ok- how did you winter over your mandevilla? I had one last year and I’m pretty sure winter killed it! Is yours in a protected place?!
@lustraveller717
@lustraveller717 2 жыл бұрын
@@DigPlantWaterRepeat yes it's in a protected area and I am in zone 10a, however my next door neighbor has a variegated plant that isn't protected and it looks wonderful! And, yes, I've already asked her if I can take a few slips to propagate it. Oh, and I just ordered my Mason house and bees🐝 (I can't wait 2 months until Mother's Day!)😁 Enjoy your day, it's chilly.
