If curiosity gets the most of you, drop a few drops of silver test acid on that dime and let it sit for 30 seconds or so. The work-hardened areas of the minting process may come through and show you details invisible to the eye. I did that with one I found and could see just enough details to figure out it was an 1873 seated. The acid left it a tiny bit rough and flat gray, but it had no numismatic value anyway! You could always carry it in your pocket a few weeks and get it good and slick again afterwards. Have your camera ready when you apply the acid. You don't want to leave it on too long, and the details disappear as soon as you rinse it... or at least they did for me.

Another nice hunt, Mike and John. Way to find that silver! You guys are so gracious with your permission homeowners. I always talk to my permissions homeowners too, and show them what I find on their property, in case there is anything they would like to have or something of sentimental value. It goes a long way toward repeat visits. Keep Diggin’ em up, guys!😎

Great video as always... Back in the 80's, you really could go to a park, walk around the trees and pickup Wheats on the surface and once in a while a piece of silver that has blended in to ground color... All about training your eyes for the shape...

Great hunt! I wish I could find some good places like that around me. Congrats Mike on the gifted shovels. And John, I hope your back feels better soon. I couldn’t use my newly bought detector for almost two years because of back pain. After disk surgery I was finally able to get out and use it. Watching your videos gives me inspiration to get out and swing!

John, the blank silver could be a Planchet. It made it through the minting process, but not pressed front or back.

The slotted piece of metal Mike found while looking at the old containers is the blade from a vegetable scraper/peeler. Great video and a dream permission. One day I going to drive over to fill in when you need a standin for one of the squad members :)

If you have a Dollar General in your area they have a generic blue gel similar to blue emu that is good for muscle pain. Other than that hot bath with Epsom salt and if all else fails, go with a couple of glasses of some good Bourbon.

Nice finds I have a really ver spot like that barber quarters halves dimes SLQs you name it on top or just under rocks flipped them over bam a half dollar Predator shovels are one of the best all I use

I recently started detecting and 2 weeks into learning i found my first old coin (1890 Indian head) and it was a surface find pretty much. 3 days later found a 1919 merc about 100 yards away.

Read the other comments and ironically the first thing I thought of was that the slick dime could be a seated. I had one given to me by someone who thought it was a barber. After looking at it under a strong magnifying glass at various lighting angles and using some olive oil on it I could just barely make out the seated sillouette and part of the date.
