In this video, we examine the evolution of an amazing singer, DIMASH! Join me as we look at snapshot performances through his career!
DIMASH - Singers Then And Now - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
The goal of this series is not to make fun of people, to show a picture of them in their youth and then mock them in their older age.
The goal is to showcase how voices have sustained over time. And who has taken care of their voices and who hasn't, and what was the result. And what could've been done differently for those that did not take care of the voices.
Could they have sustained their voices? And can they be rehabilitated now? Some singers (few) are just gifted with great genes and have been able to sustain their voices on their own. This is a rare exception. The rest of us mere mortals have to work at it, just like we have to work at our voices to get range, pitch, power, control, longevity, stamina, and so forth.
In addition, it's just really cool to check out the incredible careers of these artists and marvel at their singing.
So today, we are looking at none other than Dimash Kudaibergen!

Ken, I love this cultural analysis! I didn't realize how much our mother tongue influences the way we sing; and in a sense, we have to kind of train ourselves out of these learned language habits. Thank you so much--so informative!

Dimash continues to work on his vocals, even at his current level, usually about 3 hours or more a day -- and continues to study multiple dialects, styles, techniques, and genres... Which is one of the reasons he repeatedly wows audiences with every new performance. He never stopped learning and practicing, and never settled with an "I'm good enough now" attitude -- he puts in the time, he puts in the effort, and he's a sponge to challenge himself with every new vocal addition he can find

Dimash himself said in an interview that it's only 10% talent and 90% work. Apart from that he once confirmed to a Turkisch interviewer that he has longer vocal folds than average. But this is not all there is to say; he also has the taste and sensitivity to apply what he has in his toolbox in a favor of a song, he knows how to make a song better. It's musical instinct .He also knows how to perform and emote. He is becoming the song, which is truly an art on it's own. Dimash also said in an interview that up to this day he practices at least 3 hours a day and still works with several vocal coaches. I love how you emphasize that he has worked his ass off to get to this level. Dimash often hardly gets any sleep, he works many days and nights in the studio. He has a very strong work attitude.

He also said in an interview, that along with singing training, there is an aspect of "acting training" that he did at the college level - and he is a performer - at one with the music, knowing how to stand, move, emote, microphone handling, head tilts, the kneeling ...... the man has it ALL!!

Even people who are gifted, without training can lose their gift. Dimash might be gifted, but without the training he went through, he wouldn't have been the Dimash we know today.

I've never heard anyone say that Dimash is born with the voice he has today or claim his voice is a natural gift only. It's well known that Dimash got many years of musical education and that hours of training daily for years (decades) is what got him where he is today. He is still learning and still do practice a lot. Language absolutely does influence our way of talking/singing and our pronounciation but also our culture and our cultures music tradition but it doesn't necessarily make one more correct than the other, it can be hard to compare a local folk song to an american pop song or itialian opera. Kazakh is a turkic language like Turkish, Tatar, Kyrgyz, Uzbek and others.

Ken, thank you!! Your observations fit perfectly with what's known of the training Dimash received, and exactly when he received it. As you said, exposure to *correct* information is part of vocal evolution. I would call it a critical part, as your own students are blessed to learn. Though Dimash began vocal training at age 5, it wasn't until the age 15 that he first began training in bel canto. What a huge difference it made for him! He became the youngest student to be accepted by academic vocal coach Marat Aitimov, with whom he trained exclusively for the next 5 years. Some disagreements developed between teacher and student because Marat didn't want Dimash to sing high notes; he was afraid that Dimash would damage his voice. But, Marat says he used to catch Dimash practicing soprano notes whenever he thought the teacher wasn't around to hear him. Marat also says that his favourite students are the rebellious ones, and Dimash was one of those. Somehow the two of them must have worked out their disagreement, because it was Marat who trained Dimash to present his signature piece, "SOS", first heard in competition in 2015. I think a lot of Dimash's vocal evolution can be attributed to his relatively young and *correct* training in bel canto singing. But, the exposure would mean nothing without Dimash's extraordinary dedication to practice.

I love Dimash's version of Ave Maria. In my subjective opinion, this is the best "Ave Maria" of all time. But for analysis, I think "Stranger" is more suitable because of the technical variety used by Dimash in this song. The New Wave version is more polished and perfect. The "Super Brothers" version of the show has its own charm and extreme improvisations, although it has "roughness" due to health problems, so much so that Dimash had to seek medical help immediately after the end of his performance and leave the show ahead of schedule.

Thanks Ken. This was really an interesting video. Another aspect is that it can be more difficult to unlearn some habits than to learn new ones. I do not know how much it has affected Dimash's voice training, but the Kazakh language is totally different from Russian and belongs to the Turkish language family. Dimash did not start learning Russian until he started school. Of course, Dimash has a great musical talent, but I think his greatest talent is that he is eager to learn, work hard and never give up. By the way, he is still 27 years old and the one example where he sang Daididau, he was 23. Looking forward to more about Dimash. Again, thank you.

Dimash’s dad, Kanat sings with that tone onstage too, so it seems that is part of Kazakh verbal and singing culture. Whereas his mum, I believe has some Chinese blood in the mix, and is an operatic high soprano, and does not have a noticeable tone like that. If you follow his travels and Dears vids, you see where he tries very hard to get correct sounds and pronunciation in foreign tongue singing using phonetics. The Japanese reactors were very surprised when he sang Ikanaide and sounded like he was Japanese. Apparently, the Japanese language does not use many mouth muscles, and foreigners find it difficult to mimic. He sang the same song in the Chinese I Am Singer competition, but in Mandarin, Autumn Strong. He certainly has unique use of beautiful tones that contribute to his overall performances, and adds so many opportunities where intricate colours flash through, like in the Arnau Ukraine version of Autumn Strong in March of 2020 in the red suit.

I am a huge Dimash fan, and it has been awesome to watch his progression from 2016 until now. Dimash has said in many interviews, singing is like a Physical Sport and it is 1% Talent and 99% Hard work. Dimash also said that everyone is born with a talent and should work hard to improve that talent so that it is not wasted. Dimash admitted that he trains his voice and practices about 3 hours every day, either with a Vocal Coach or by himself. In the same Kazakhstan TV Interview, Dimash said (paraphrasing)

I think Dimash is one of those rare examples where extreme natural talent meets extreme work ethic. I would say Dimash’s 12 year old performances showed significantly higher skill levels/aptitude than young Michael Jackson, at least IMO. Young MJ was more pleasing to the ear because he was emulating Motown, higher familiarity. I think a really good ear carried MJ as a kid more than freak natural vocal talents.

I'm one of those who was just along for the ride. I am blown away. What you said makes complete sense about the various languages. And your demonstration/explanation made it clear to me. Your soccer analogy was a good one---I think there are a number of examples in sports of someone that has natural talent has also worked very hard---those who are the very best. And that seems to be the case in singing in all of the different genres. Heck, it seems to be the case in all sorts of aspects in life. You bring up a point that is very important though----no matter if you have gifted talent or not so gifted at the start, hard work at solid training will make you much better at whatever you are doing. Thank you very much for this comparison----so very informative.

Kazakhs have their own "musical school", many famous Kazakh singers are still known in former USSR countries, being so different from Russian singers). The newest Stranger performed in show "Shine. One of the comments that people often make to compliment Dimash's singing is that he is not human or that he is an alien. These comments though well intended have bothered me because I think they do not recognize the hard work he has put in to become the accomplished singer that he is. This video more than any other I have seen recognizes that. Yes. He is an amazing singer. Yes. He is gifted. But he sings as well as he does because he worked for it. He isn't an alien. He is a human being who has worked hard for his gift.

Hi, Ken! You can't even imagine how pleasant the analysis of a professional is! Listening to you, you realize that the rock of our generation is alive, your vocals are wonderful! As for Dimash, I am very glad that in my old age I can get goosebumps from the vocals of very young, but already cosmic performers. It's a pity that Dimash is supported by goosebumps only by girls - Angelina, Aurora, Danelia and of course - Diana Ankudinova! Hey guys, hey, where are you?

Dimash swims underwater for 1 hour per day to train his lungs and diaphragm for those long notes, and practices for 3 hours per day in singing, plus during his everyday life, he sings more than he talks. So for him it is a lifestyle. He still gets vocal lessons from experts so they can be judges of his sounds, as he does not altogether only trust his own hearing. He trained in operatic and classical, pop and jazz, and composition, and by watching him, it is obvious that he has trained for or picked up theatre and stage. Since his mum uses her hands to demonstrate or emotionalise her singing, he has picked that up as an essential for his audiences pleasure, and his body language is into that anyway. I’ve never before seen a singing artist just onstage that can keep the audience so fully engaged in every sound, breath, and body movement. He is spectatacular, and is fully engaged in his destiny, to our great benefit. What about you Ken? With your range and talent, you must have some very good performances and maybe starred in some shows. How about some info. You may not realise that 80 year old Tesla medical technology will be released sometime between now and 2 years, and it involves medbeds technology which has not been seen until now, and will heal everything back to 27 year old DNA, so I understand? So there may be a lot of young vocal cords that need training in the future. They’ll have the advantage/disadvantage of varying years of experience to either overcome or gain assistance from. Soooo, music and especially singing will follow Dimash’s experience for some time….for the better, don’t you think. Just something to look forward to, that hopefully, will come to pass. This fits in with his destiny, being released in this timeframe when music was getting a bit stale, and we needed new frequencies for public healing and refreshment. All the best, and keep on keeping on.

It is rarely mentioned that Dimash trained for many years in all aspects of vocal technique, not to mention music theory. He clearly did not come "out of nowhere". Some info on Dimash from Wiki: "He is university-trained in classical as well as contemporary music, and is known for his exceptionally wide vocal range... Although offered a position at the Astana Opera, he decided to carve out his career in contemporary music, mixing classical elements and traditional Kazakh music with pop music." Info about his music education: "At the age of five, Kudaibergen began to take piano and vocal lessons at the children's studio of Aktobe's Akhmet Zhubanov Music College. He later attended Gymnasium No. 32 in Aktobe. Kudaibergen completed a Broadway Musical master class in 2009. In 2014, he graduated in Classical Music with Major in Vocal (Bel Canto) from the music institute of K. Zhubanov University in Aktobe and began his studies in Contemporary Music (Jazz, Pop) at Kazakh National University of Arts in Astana, where he graduated with Major in Vocal on 27 June 2018. On 18 June 2020, he graduated from the same university with a Master's Degree in Composition by defending his Master's thesis with a perfect score, and receiving a recommendation for admission to doctoral studies in music."

Thanks for doing this, show them how much effort Dimash has put in. Many people say these sings about Dimash about being an alien and stuff as a joke, but it starts to annoy me. It's like they're discounting all his hard work. Also, I'm just a tiny bit confused as to why the person who made the compilation didn't include the 2018 performance of Jamaica as comparison. He sang it at both 18 and 22.

Oh Ken!!!... I was waiting soooo badly for this one... Great video!!! ALWAYS NAILING IT with the correct precise explanation. Just a little clarification, in fact, he was close to fourteen years old in the first footage and... is the Kazakh language which is very strong in the sounds of the vowels, not precisely Russian, what made him pronounce like that. Thank you for this extraordinary analysis.
