‪@dimmuborgir‬ is a Norwegian symphonic black metal band from Jessheim, formed in 1993. The name is derived from Dimmuborgir, a volcanic formation in Iceland, the name of which means "dark cities" or "dark castles/fortresses" in Icelandic, Faroese and Old Norse.

The female singer is Agnete Kjølsrud from the band Djerv. For non metalheads she's also rather well known for singing the theme song for the League of Legends character Jinx. A song with over 100 million youtube views.

Hey! Great video, keep it up! When it comes to language choice, choosing to put out songs in English just means you have a much greater chance to make it outside your own country. Remember, Europe alone has 24 (official) languages, and more than 200 languages spoken across the continent. Dimmu Borgir, being Norwegian, could be understoond quite easily in Sweden and Denmark, and potentially Iceland and Finland (as they learn Swedish in school), but outside those countries its just as foreign as any other language. On top of that, in many countries in Europe, English is a natural part of everyday life as a second language, so it really isn't that big of a deal to a lot of people. (Obviously this is generalizing, but us Europeans just deal with multiple languages all the time, so it comes fairly natural)

I'm from Finland and I don't mind Finnish bands singing in English. Everyone is taught English in school and most people understand it quite well. A lot of music is still done in our own language, so we can have the best of both. =) BTW Dimmu Borgir's first two albums were sung in Norwegian, they switched to English on their third one "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant".

As a Belgian, I've always felt weird listening to Dutch language music. I love music in other languages, but not in Dutch. Dunno if anyone else has that.

People in the know here in Norway used to say that despite the fact that we know English pretty well, it's not our mothertounge. Kliches and banalities fall through when singing in your mothertounge, whereas most of the (non-english-speaking) audience just think that English sounds cool, where an american or brit might find it somewhat banal and unimaginative. This could be the reason why you feel Dutch music sounds silly whereas English sounds cool? These days, however, I don't know. I have norwegian friends who know english better than norwegian, so this point is perhaps moot now.

In northern countries we all speak our native tongue and English, so it doesn’t matter. For me I first listen to the sound of the band and the voice, if I like it I can look up lyrics later sometimes several years later, and the song can suddenly be interesting again. A lot of metal core band I just hear a few words, and it doesn’t matter if it’s in my native language 😂 Took me a few years to realize that Igorrr was in a made up language for example 😅

Hey guys! In Norway, we learn English at school for 8 to 11 years, it depends on what you choose after secondary school. So for us, it is quite common for vocalists to sing in English 🤘

Female voice is Agnete Kjolsrud , is vocal of Djerv !!!! what is strange for you is normal for us, Europe has many countries with different languages but when it comes to music, English unites us, it is strange that a European band sings only in their native language, and Dimmu Borgir has an album in Norwegian

The first couple of records Dimmu Borgir made was in norwegian. You should listen to Vredesbyrd, that’s in norwegian. And no, we don’t mind them signing in english. Norwegians understand english just as well as norwegian.

I get what you're saying about the image. Rammstein is the greatest show on earth because they have an image. Their stage also costs $530,000 per show. Not every band has that luxury to spend that much. Not all bands want an "image" and a huge stage. They just want to get out there and play music as themselves. I get that you're entertained by a big production and I love that as well. But not every band can be or do that.
