Dimorphodon was a bizarre-looking pterosaur that lived during the Early Jurassic period. Unlike many species of pterosaur, Dimorphodon was a poor flier and spent much of its time on the ground! Discover more about this intriguing creature and its habits in this episode of What Was Lost.

I've never heard about this theory of Dimorphodon, and I'm very skeptical. Nature and evolution don't make mistakes. It wouldn't just simply regress and be a bad flyer. It would take environmental pressure. Having more abundant terrestrial food sources may lead to becoming a predator that hunts on the ground. If this was successful, there would be pressure to spend limited energy resources on parts of the body that helped with this lifestyle, instead of spending it in flying. That happened to the flightless birds of today. But Dimorphodon was clearly not a land predator. And its teeth scream out that it is an obvious fish-eater. The "bad flyer" theory has taken scientists off the truth that these were coastal predators; that's why we have a record of them, because they preserved so well in the quick-covering sands of a sea bottom. In actual fact, Dimorphodon, with its deceptively light skull was probably an agile and maneuverable flyer. This is the price they pay for not being able to soar, just as vultures are unable to perform the deft maneuvers of swallows or bats. Short wings make for a more maneuverable flyer, which Dimorphodon would need to be to hunt fast-swimming fish. It's all there in the skeleton, folks.

Yeah, it probably would swim and fly in shallow waters and catch small fish instead of flying in the open oceam
