Hello CATNIP: Cool Calm Immune Boosting Herb
Catnip is a healing herb that supports us in so many ways: from tension bellyaches to flus and fevers. It’s a gentle but potent herbal ally that every household should know about.
Learn to ID, harvest and use this perennial, scientifically called Nepeta cataria of the Lamiaceae family.
I love this plant. Sometimes, I add small amounts minced into food to add an interesting minty muskiness, but mostly it is consumed as a tea or tincture.
Uses
To calm, cool and relax both, emotionally and physically. For menstrual cramps, for sleep, for tension bellyaches, nausea, colic, and for immune support during colds, flus and fevers. It increases detoxification through sweating; so can be added to detox formulas.
Therapeutic Qualities
Relaxant, nervine, calmer, antispasmodic, diaphoretic, cooling, digestive / carminative, decongestant.
To make a medicinal grade catnip infusion (strong tea), make sure to steep it in a jar with a tight fitting lid, so the therapeutic volatile compounds stay in your tea rather than being released into the room.
Potential Contraindications
While gentle enough for babies and elders and everyone in between, as always, please research any new food or medicine, go slowly, learn, and discuss using it with your healthcare provider.
Habitat
Look for it in anthropogenic (human created) sites: meadows, edges of woodlands, fields. Likes rich moist soil in full sun to part shade.
Hardiness Zones (USDA): 3-9. Native of Eurasia (S Europe, West & Central Asia). Now distributed throughout the USA and many temperate regions of the world
Catnip can be vigorous and weedy (which I like). It is a herbaceous perennial (often short lived) that spreads itself about by seeds. If needing to control it, don't let it go to seed.

My cat roles around in my catmint plants, so I planted some catnip seeds for him, had no idea it was also medicinal. Great info.

Thank you ~ Good to know that it isn't a long lasting (in one planting hole) perennial. I have my one catnip caged or it would be decimated by the barn cats. What a wonderful open space yours is growing in - too cool!

I have just discovered this channel and I am impressed and want to know more! I'm curious how did you get all those plants in your garden ? How many years does it take to get a variety of things such as yours?

Is catnip related to the same family tree as hemp? Looks somewhat similar in the leaf structure.
@DinaFalconi
@DinaFalconi 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. Not in the same family as hemp. Catnip is in the mint family, aka Lamiaceae family.

Another great teaching video. Is catnip similar in health benefits to catmint? I have a lot of catmint, but I can’t find much on its therapeutic benefits. Thank you.

Thanks for appreciating the video. I have not used catmint internally, although enjoy it in the gardens. I think you are referring to Nepeta faassenii species, yes? Even so, I have only used Nepeta cataria aka catnip therapeutically. But would be good to learn more!

Yes, for sure, can be used without inducing sleep, but if you are sleep deprived it might make you relaxed and sleepy.

Am new subscriber, haven't watch all your videos so far, I want to ask if you have any plant for bloating .
@DinaFalconi
@DinaFalconi 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for subscribing. Please note that I don't give personal health advice. Still for bloat, generally speaking, one could use a digestive aromatic like fennel seeds, and a bitter herb like dandelion. Catnip may also be helpful. Be well.

Where I come from in Dominica 🇩🇲 the flowers 💐 are much more colorful & much more potent best flu remedy I know strangely I’m only today finding out it’s name is catnip but we call it mamizoo or the toothbrush tree because the older generation would use the tree stems as such 😊
@DinaFalconi

Thank you, curious to know the scientific name of the plant you use in Dominica. Please note, that this plant we focus on in this video, whose scientific name is Nepeta cataria, is not a tree.

@@DinaFalconi sorry for my way of speaking using the term tree but it’s the same plant (herb) how ever you wanna call it but the ones in the Caribbean are much stronger than those on KZfaq stronger in body stronger in medicinal potency

Does babies breath ,wild carrot and hemlock look somewhat the same to a complete amateur?
@DinaFalconi
@DinaFalconi 2 жыл бұрын
To a complete amateur, many plants can look the same. Best to study, with patience, looking at all the plant ID features, then identifying plants becomes a fun puzzle that you can solve. Many of the videos I create are meant to help develop ID skills. Repetition is the best way to learn this new plant language. So great to view the videos a bunch of times to become fluent.
