Bypassed Galway? Make sure you return someday! The Galway, Connemara area are very special also and should not be missed. If in Galway, make sure you have a pint at murphys and or Nauctains pub in center of town among many fine music pubs. Make sure you have a pint with Frank at Trappers Inn Pub on the Tuam road, my local for the last 40 years with my Best Friend Brendan Dowling still sitting at the bar......Do some research on the Honorable Grace Omalley, the irish pirate queen. She was an amazing person, especially for her time! The history in Galway itself is amazing, ancient walled city. Sail safe and enjoy my Friend. ps there are docks etc right on edge of Galway and a small but nice marina at the very tip of the bay that has a sailing club.

I just wish I had unlimited hours of watching Sam sailing all over the world. This content is honestly my favorite on youtube. I've been to Ireland when I was in my early 20's - really cool to see the place from your perspective again :). The people in Ireland were some of the most welcoming people I've ever met.

Ireland is such a great place to do walking holidays and Dingle is a lovely little town. Beautiful countryside, as is Scotland. But in August 2018 I walked around the entire Dingle Peninsula. The day I walked past The Blaskets (the most western point in all of Ireland) there were rain showers scudding off the Atlantic & across the islands and it was incredibly moving, especially knowing that in days gone by families lived permanently on The Blaskets living on rabbits, fish and some sea birds. Anyone interested read "The Islander" by Tomas O'Crohan an amazing tale of resilience and survival in one of the most extreme places on earth. Lovely in the summer, sometimes, but a really hard life. No one lives there now. You see the abandoned homes and plots at (2.04 - 2.13). But thanks Sam, seeing the islands from a sailor's perspective brought it all back. Loving your videos mate. Beautiful place!

I had good luck with epson salts non-skid. You might try it on your bowsprit. Lay down a coat of varnish. Then immediately sprinkle epson salts all over it. After the varnish (or paint, as the case may be) hardens (several days), rinse with water to remove the epson salts. The craters of the epson slat make a nice, but not super aggressive, non-skid. Then when you want to re-varnish or re-paint, you're only sanding varnish or paint; not grit. That non skid method worked on the cabin top of my boat all the way from NZ to California.

You could buy some skate board grip tape to apply to the deck and bow sprit while you get round to painting it. Grip tape even comes in clear so you can see the wood underneath :-)

I think the first ruins you past were "Cromwell's Barracks."Cromwell was the guy who had Charles I beheaded in the 1600's. One of the UK's most important historical figures.

So many stories about the Blasket islands. Perhaps you can review and add some details later. There are some illuminating accounts of life on the Blaskets early in the 20th century. One of the Blasket Islands is 'Inishvickillaun'. Notably it was owned from 1974 by Charles Haughey later Prime Minister of Ireland (Taoseach) and associated with gun running. His attempt to get the Blaskets turned into a state park failed after an 11 year legal battle in 1999. French President Francois Mitterrand visited in 1998. 'Inishvickillaun' is the most westerly populated island of Ireland, first place in Europe to see the eclipse in 2090.

I'm no sailing expert but ... Every couple sailing channel I see, when they sail through the night, one of them is up and on deck at all times, to keep watch. Sam: I slept 10 hours last night (in the middle of a passage from Ireland to Scotland. You're a mad dog my friend hahaha love it

Sam 3M make a stick on non skid tape. I first used it 10 years ago in industrial situation and it is still holding well. I use it on my boat all the time. Work's great. All the best in Scotland. Richard McLaren.

Will ye go to Iona ? It's a must do. Several thousand medieval monks and saints are buried there, and about 50 Kings. Scottish, Norwegian, viking , English . As well as Lords and ladies and dignitaries past. It's a sacred place. Go to the North beach and say hello to John in the beautiful iona hostel. Sit in St columba's seat there and watch the sun go down.
