Those large whitish lite grayish groups of rocks that wiggle when you pickaxe them give you 3-4 items - random ores, shiny rocks, fossils and sometimes 1 plain rock.

Left clicking on one of the buildings in your town (on your map) will cause it to place a pointer icon on your mini map.
