I've been so sad , it truly brought it home as to how short goat lives can be. Ringo has been showing himself in front of the camera lately. I originally thought he couldn't walk but yes he can. I can't tell if his medicine is helping him or not. I sure hope so 😢 Just thought about our sweet boy today. I love him so much 💓🐐

Dani and Ruby are so cute! Love your alligator song 🎵❤-never heard that one before. Interesting suggestion about alfalfa, but growing up on an acreage where we had our own alfalfa, it was all our cows ate throughout the winter months. They never had a problem eating it every day. In the summer we had plenty of pasture for them to graze and stay healthy. That was in Eastern Washington. Can't remember if we dealt with any droughts in those years.

Alfalfa is the best. We grew it in NY on or dairy farm. We fed corn silage as a staple, some grains, alfalfa but not everyday on the alfalfa. Molasses sprinkled on the hay in the winter time for extra nutrition. (My job) Being a dairy farm my dad was interested in getting a high butterfat count. That is how we made our income. Great memories.

THANK YOU for being such responsible animal owner and KZfaq influencer!! Yes, Timothy is a very good excellent hay--not as rich as Alfalfa, but very adequate in protein, very balanced in nutrition, and is an excellent source of daily forage. Alfalfa is very high in protein and particularly good for lactating animals. I should add that my experience is mainly with horses and not ruminants and I understand that ruminants can be fed lesser rich and lesser quality hays???

Alfalfa is a "hot" hay and you are exactly right-on to feed sparingly. It's such a great grass, rich in what is needed. it is expensive though and many new-to-farm people would probably think not worth it. I fed a leaf (flake) to each horse in the winter especially in NY, along with a 1st cutting orchard grass. Lots of keyboard experts out there on what to feed YOUR babies - you keep on doing what you know is right for your animals.

You might try to plant Alfalfa on 20 or so acres. In Idaho they get 3 to 4 cuttings per season for each acre. Some Alfalfa hay will pass through the rumen of a beef cow in about one-half the time required by grass hay (36 versus 70 hours). Therefore, animals fed alfalfa hay tend to gain faster, produce more milk, and maintain themselves in better condition than those fed other forages.
