Around the world, many education systems struggle to bring a high-quality education to those students who need it most: Students from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
But in one London school, a knowledge miracle is happening. Guided by headmistress Katharine Birbalsingh, Michaela School is changing children’s lives by challenging them to learn.
Described by Boris Johnson as an “incredible school”, Michaela School delivers where other schools often give up.
Katharine Birbalsingh joined us for an inspiring dinner lecture on Thursday 31 May in Auckland to tell 'The story of Michaela.'

Thomas SOWELL is the nearest that a human being is to God . EVEN God would be flattered by such a comparison. If this woman is like him then she must be a Godess. Go woman you can do it!

As a teacher I would love to visit this school and learn the system they have. It appears to be a no nonsense approach to offering a high standard education.

@jjj where did you get this information from? it really astonishes me how people easily throw accusations at an extra ordinary amazing work to help kids that would had never had a chance to perform that well.

Check out her interview with Dave Rubin. Well worth a look. If only she could be cloned and put in every classroom in NZ.

Little did she know that at the time of her speech the NZ Labour government had already set in motion plans to get rid of all of NZ's Partnership/charter schools, turning them into states schools - despite the Partnership schools proving themselves with far better academic results than state schools. Edit: "By September 2018, all twelve remaining charter schools had successfully transitioned to become state integrated schools." [wiki]

Sir Ken Robinson said we can't keep doing the same thing and expecting different results and that we must give status to all subjects rather that the key subjects to prepare for a future we don't even understand. I don't think to teach should be providing fun and games, but engagement, for me, is key. Also, based on my childhood, teachers and their ability to build a rapport played a huge role. I think giving kids motivation to learn is everything and backing it up with reward and consequence. Providing solutions for students struggling is also imperative. If you provide ways for children to access their materials, I think this reduced behavioural problems.

Interesting speech. I came into education 3 years ago, aged 37. I was all A*s and As, first class honours etc. and I was shocked at how much the narrative seems to stupify. This is breath of fresh air. Strange to end on a quote from a character who refuses to take responsibility and grow up by maintaining a delusion though. Now, what were the titles of the books cited?
