Foster was my grandad. A little-known fact was that he had such severe dyslexia he couldn’t accept the lead in a movie or anything where he was required to memorize lines. I’ve always wondered, if they’d just told him about the character and let him run with it, they’d have had a smash (pardon the pun-I am my grandfather’s kin, after all 😂) hit on their hands. I’m sure he improved the more times he played this character, but he had an innate sense of timing and delivery, a true gift.

SNL is not exactly the competition. SNL is, by its nature, a comedy experiment. They try a lot of things that don’t work very well but they also do a lot that does work. Dean Martin’s show was in prime time. SNL is late night, with a target audience of young people who couldn’t find anything to do on Saturday night. It doesn’t get any funnier than Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin, and Palin herself liked it so much she hosted the show one night and even performed with Tina. For another example, I defy you to seek out SNL’s spoof commercial for Amazon Echo Silver (it’s here on youtube) and not laugh at it. It’s hilarious!

That's was the same way when he was with Jerry. He came in from the golf course right before the show. Got a rough idea what Jerry had in mind, they ab-lib most of it. I think Dean was more natural at it then Jerry.

My all time favorite Foster Brooks skit. I'll never tire seeing it again and again or fail to laugh. This is REAL comedy. A bucket full of 4 letter words so-called comedians spew out today is NOT comedy, yet it is allowed and not a skit like this. What is with that? The PC world has lost the plot. Also, Dean Martin was one of the most talented people ever and, though popular as he was, he was never given the accolades he deserved. He did it all - singing, comedy, serious acting, TV, movies, live performances. Very few entertainers can even come close to claiming having done it all like he did.

Good clean comedy, wonderful acting. I am 79 and enjoying every minute of it in far away RSA.

Brooks’ professionalism really shines through, as he exits the stage with a bow. Bravo!

We need shows like this, more stars like these! Dean never liked to rehearse the script because he loved seeing the jokes for the first time, so when the crowd is going hysterical you can guarantee so was Dean! Lol

I love the bit at 3:43 when Foster is about to say the next line but has to hold on because Dean is laughing so much.

Royal Fool I totally agree... they were so perfect in this skit

Indeed. He actually starts the line but can't finish it, then Dean says "Yes" to try and rescue it but Foster turns round, glances at Dean's cue cards and says "yes?" because it's not there and this makes Dean lose it even more.

Watching this reminds me that there is good side-splitting fun without foul language - I'm glad it's on KZfaq so I can pause it while I run to the bathroom before I have an accident!!

Foster Brooks plays a fantastic drunk but he is also fantastic at keeping a straight face, especially with Dean completely out of control !

The whole family always watched Dean's show. It was great entertainment. We all loved Foster Brooks. What I also found funny about him was that others would be breaking up around him when he did a routine. But somehow he never went out of character, he didn't laugh like everyone else, he never missed a beat. I really miss these days, I don't watch today's comedians, they just aren't funny.
