Scatman Cruthers. His heyday of popularity began several years earlier in the 1930s as a performer. A well know figure until his death in the 1980s.

My mom watched this movie years ago she even had the VHS movie of it..she said this was one of her favorite scenes...the shoeshine guy she thinks was Scatman Cruthers...she wasn't sure ...and not to sure of how to spell his last name

Yes, Scatman Crothers was one of the hardest working men in show business, managing to find parts in all sorts of movies, TV shows, cartoons, etc. He was often seen on "Sanford and Son." He wasn't called "Scatman" for nothing. He had talent for singing "scat," like Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Mel Torme.

@@jc9240actually, it was very common and very popular. Old time Barbers I work with tell me about the days of smoking, we even still have ashtrays on our 1957 barber chairs. And how they use to shave? Instead of having the customer "ball the chin", the barber use to stick his hand in the clients mouth to get a good stretch and a smooth swish lol
