I was there - Reading Festival 1991. Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, Nirvana. Iggy Pop headlined. I remember almost crying on the way home because I realised I'd never see anything that good again.

this version of Freak Scene blows away any other version of this song. i love when the crowd sings along at "cuz when i need a friend it's still you." then J & Murph go nuts. :)

There was a concert in NYC a few days ago with Dinosaur Jr, Kim Gordon, Lee Renaldo, Black Francis, Johnny Rotten, and Johnny Marr. I'd say that exceeds the epicness level.

This is the most incredible thing I’ve seen on KZfaq for a long time. Dinosaur jr just letting loose and tearing it up back in 1991... Back when grunge was cool, and bands played loud and messy music that spoke to outcasts, but could still attract huge crowds... If you were there in 91 you’d soak in that noise, forget your worries, fall in love and just ride the storm. This footage captures all that, it’s remarkable. Freak Scene was always a favourite for me, and what a performance of it here. Ive really stumbled on something special today, amazing to think I can enjoy this almost 30 years later. I’m actually so moved by this video, it’s beautiful. J Mascis was the coolest guy in the world in 91!

Cracking video called 1991: The year punk broke that this was filmed for, as long as loads of Nirvana, Sonic Youth, The Ramones, Mudhoney as well as back stage interviews footage. Can't believe that was 19 years ago.

I don't know if it's still available but there was a documentary of the Sonic Youth tour 1991 - The Year punk broke. I had it on VHS - brilliant live footage and also all the bands (mudhoney, nirvana, SY, Dinosaur to name a few) Great days. Will never be bettered.

underrated as shit. I mean they are known quite a bit, but the fact that their influenced bands overshadow these originators so much sickens me. Fantastic song by the way.

Fuck they're just an amazing band! I loved that video. Hope it gets a DVD release sometime. Henry Rollins' best friend and old Black Flag roadie, Joe Cole, can be seen on the side of the stage with a big smile on his face. This was possibly not long before he was tragically killed. R.I.P. Joe

Would have loved to see this. I have seen all of them on differant tours, actually saw Sonic Youth opening for Neil Young...I thought they were great, but the crowd was huge and the venues were large...they seemed out of their element! Neil just seemed so much bigger than SY...it was like the building swollowed them up. Saw Dino Jr. just last year in a small club that I have played in Castaways in upstate NY.

I wish I was old enough back then, to be aware of such a concert. I was only 2 when this film came out. Damn, Most of my generation's biggest alt. artist are underground. But since my generation is currently being inundated with Lady Gaga, I have a feeling that some alt rock band is gonna come up and change the course of music for our generation, somewhat similar to what Nirvana did in the early 90's at a time when Gnex was being inundated with HairMetal. I'm 21 right now, I wish for this NOW!!

However, I get your point, and it is a good one. I would make a couple of modifications to the analogy. Instead of the generic (and somewhat of a stereotype) "cute," I would say "intellectual and sexy." I like the reading weird comic books bit, but Nirvana were definitely more of the couch-pissers than Dino Jr..

haha!!!!! you crack me up. omg haha. thats so funny when people tell me that one day ill grow out of liking the music that i like and will realize how it is crap. and im not under the impression that speed and musical ability is better than good songwriting. i listen to plenty of bands that have slow, easy to play songs that i like. it doesnt have to do with whether the songs are hard to play, it has to do with the song being good. if your gonna base an argument on a selected few of my fav bands

Awesome vid. Perhaps it's a little corny and stage-showy, but I like J's movement from 0.22 - 0.36. As a whole, the boys had great stage presence that day.

I agree, alot of metal fans dont respect other kinds of rock cause the music isnt hard to play, and thats y i dont listen to alot of todays metal because it all sounds the same, fast chugging riffs, arpeggio sweeps, and double-bass the whole time. but alright, im tired of fighting
