Well, this is an amazing model, not just in sculpt, but now, a highly fantastical colour that will turn heads. If giving us a Mamenchisaurus with a wonderful sculpt and incredible paint applications in the brown wasn’t enough, HLG gives us this variant with one of the rarest colours in Nature- blue!

Love the commentary on color!! Informative and presented in a way that makes the concept easier to understand. Thank you!

Thank you Michael! But please ignore what I said about tessellated scales. It should not have factored in as colour properties happen due to microscopic structural characteristics. I was trying to express a different idea which actually isn't even that important!

You're most welcome! Please ignore that bit about imbricated vs tessellated scales though! I said it poorly and confused it with another point I wanted to make.

To make it look more natural, I love to see some scars on its body. For a giant like this who's been through some rough times, it should have some scars to prove its toughness. This looks so damn near perfect. I'm in love. And thank you for that lesson about skin color. I never knew that, and it never even crossed my mind. This is why I always say I learn so many new things by watching your precious videos. Even though most of our collectors adore Beast of the Mesozoic figures, I'm not a huge fan of them. Mainly because of their color schemes. And, of course, those unnatural joints. Either way, this figure wins again. Unarguably, it's the best Mamenchisaurus figure out there.

Thank you my friend! This has been a really enjoyable video to make, although please ignore what I said about tessellated and imbricated scales and their relationship to colour! That was confused with another idea I was trying to express, so just disregard it altogether 😁 I also think it would be reasonable to have scars of life on such a big animal. In fact, a few models have actually included these little blemishes, so that in fact we get a realistic representation of something not picture perfect. I have to agree with you on the BOTM figures. They are very good for what they are, but there are real limitations to having to make figures that are super poseable, and how those joints interfere with the overall appearance, and not to mention colour discontinuities when you pose them. I commend them for still trying to be as accurate within those limitations as they can be. But I really cannot live with those colours. Instinctively, they felt wrong, and now that I've learnt a lot more about colours and pigment, I feel that it would be reasonable for their raptors to have such colours, compared to their ceratopsians. And finally, yes, in my opinion, HLG now has the best mass produced Mamenchisaurus!

The unfortunate thing is, blue, in nature, is exceptionally rare among large vertebrates (even the "blue whale" is more of a grey, and only LOOKS blue in the water). In fact, I can think of NO extant vertebrates over 100 kg in body mass which are truly BLUE. So, it seems in light of that a bit improbable that sauropods, much as I LOVE the look, would BE truly blue. Wh evidence we do have for skin pigmentation in Diplodocus, however, which is at least a sauropod, suggests an earthy yellow hue - maybe like a rusty brownish-yellow, not banana or lemon yellow, but muted. The GOOD news for us of course is that since it's very hard if not impossible to discern true skin color in an extinct animal, lacking exceptional skin preservation, we can speculate all we want and it's somewhat unlikely that said speculation - barring really incredible preservation under special circumstances - will be disproven any time soon .PLUS, with Diplodocus being a color that frankly you ALSO don't see a lot in 100kg + extant vertebrates (I suppose some crocs can have a yellowish undertone to their scales), it does open that door to other hues on the "brighter" and more fanciful side of things than a mere grey, brown or dark green. Sauropods, as adults, PROBABLY did not COMPLETELY change color palates from when they were young - some of it likely carried over into adulthood - but once big enough to deter all but the most determined and largest predators, they could likely AFFORD a splash of color here and there - probably in a highly visible location, high up, like...the neck and along the dorsal region. Then again, the biggest animals TODAY tend to be FAIRLY monochromatic - they have just one color dominating, maybe some countershading, but that tends to be it, with the exception the spots on a giraffe or speckles on some crocodilians. By and large though, conservatism with color seems to be dominant in large terrestrial MODERN vertebrates and I suspect the same is likely true for sauropods: one dominant color throughout but perhaps with some lighter shade on the underbelly and possibly a splash of red or something catchy on the head or throat. Elephants are kind of just brown-grey. So are rhinos. Giraffes have spots, but only two colors dominate. Of the living terrestrial archosaurs, however, we DO have some FAIRLY large taxa like the Cassowary which has a BRIGHT blue to its face and neck region - so certainly, even though it's a bit of an exception among the earth-toned ground-running birds that exceed 60kg (ostriches, emus and rheas are all fairly earth-toned or black). But it's also important to note that there ARE no direct allegories living today for giant sauropod dinosaurs. An elephant, giraffe, a crocodile, an ostrich, NONE of them are really occupying the same niche (moving mountain capable of changing entire landscapes who are also scaly-skinned non-avian archosaurs) - and in general scaly animals tend to exhibit more color variation than furry or scale-less animals (I've seen bright red lizards, neon green snakes, yellow and blue and almost purple - but mammals are with a few exceptions - baboons - pretty muted and I've never seen a bright blue, neon green or magenta mammal) - so I'm prepared to accept the possibility that they were very different from large Africa herbivores or even crocs and birds.

How many terrestrial animals over 100kg can you name that are not partially colour blind? I count only ostriches, anacondas, crocodiles and gorillas (which are still only trichromats). Birds, amphibians and squamates are extremely colourful groups. If you look at the one group of trichromat mammals (primates) you will also see bright blues, yellows and reds pop up with high frequency (mandrills, orangutans, snub-nosed monkeys, vervets, doucs, squirrel monkeys, tamarins). The third largest bird has a lot of colour. I dont disagree with this trend but I certainly do not rule out observation bias being a factor.

Thank you my friend! I am getting better slowly, but HLG and PNSO always releasing so closely to each other doesn't help much! I'm delighted that you like the science part. Please note though, to ignore what I said about imbricated vs tessellated scales and their impact on colour. I got jumbled with expressing a different idea! I _have_ noticed that Everythingdinosaur does tend to get them very late. I wonder if it's due to some EU regulation progress. Anyway, it will be worth the wait! They look much better in hand than any video can show you!😁

So, I watched Part 1 and was glad to see that the figure was much better than released images. I was considering the green but, like you, there’s enough green in my collection and most of it from HLG. The color plus patterns will begin to just blend on the shelf. The blue, even as a limited collectible, wasn’t my cup of tea so, I ordered the brown and looking forward to it. Pigmentation and how it’s acquired is really fascinating and the flamingo has always been the standard example of this process. Doesn’t mean there weren’t blue dinosaurs but that was a color that may have been common amongst the feathered dinos and probably harkens to a continued physiological process within extant birds we have today, many of whom sport blue or blue-ish feathers. Great work, as always. Looking forward to the comparisons. Take care and feel better. Aaannnd….great job on covering the pneumatic workings within the neck vertebrae. The counterbalancing act of certain sauropods is so amazing given the neck/body, tail ratios. Rest the voice.

Thank you for your kind comment and well-wishes. The voice is much better, but sadly replaced by something much worse... toothache 🤣 If I were forced to choose one, I would choose the plain, so IMHO, you chose the best of all worlds by choosing the plain. There are complexities in the paint application that are not there in the blue, and it looks like a real dinosaur that could exist for sure. And yes indeed, dinosaurs with a more feathery integument and a smaller size may well have been coloured brilliantly! I wish I could have said a lot more about the pneumaticity of these amazing mega animals! The idea is such a fascinating topic that one can get buried in a lot of minutiae and then go off the deep end 🤣

(late)May the fourth be with you! I was also waiting for your in-hand reviews of both brown and blue versions, yet the blue is a true eye-catching scheme. I think it will arrive at the same time as my late sea shipping purple Alamosaurus, so that would make a good timing. Highly speculative, yet it will be amazing to be displayed in a Shaximiao formation collection with the upcoming HLG Huayangosaurus and last year's Y.magnus 'Dapeng'. Get well soon and thanks for the review!

I think you might notice under some lighting conditions, that the blue Mamenchisaurus really does resemble the blue HLG Alamosaurus, so in a way, getting the purple will be a better contrast! I did compare the Yangchuanosaurus in Part 3. I almost forgot to look through my dinosaurs by formation. Not a lot of models from Shaximiao though!

¡Disculpas!

I've not heard anything about scale type affecting structural colour before, do you have any further reading on that? :o My (fairly surface level) understanding was that since it occurs at the nano scale and that it occurs in feathers, which themselves are just derived dino scales, and mammal skin so frequently it would probably be quite widespread among dinosaurs too.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons Ай бұрын
Zac thank you for pointing that out! I was groggy and muddle-headed and completely unclear. What I should have said was that imbrication might allow another way of interaction between scales, and potential another aspect to how that colour may show up. I will put an erratum in my description immediately.
