A new remastering I made of the only known complete tape of Lipatti's fabled 1950 Zurich performance of the Chopin E Minor Concerto with Otto Ackermann conducting, based on a remastering I assisted with in 1999 which was published on the German label 'archiphon' in 2000. The sound is much clearer than the EMI release, and the piano sound is more faithfully represented. One can hear Lipatti's huge dynamic range, warm singing sound, clean articulation, and most surprisingly his incredibly vigorous delivery of virtuosic passages, all the more amazing considering how seriously ill he was at the time of this concert.
I am uploading this in one complete clip as KZfaq is now allowing me to do clips longer than 15 minutes; this transfer was previously viewable in two clips.
For more information on the saga behind the discovery and release of this concert recording, please see

That second theme is incredible, but it's simply the most beautiful thing in the world when Lipatti joins. Especially in the recapitulation! His rubato is just perfect.

Thank You for this recording. There were three I admired, Rubinstein for his mastery, Neuhaus for his refinement and Gilels for power, but Lipatti took me somewhere I have never been before and it will take long time for me to know where it is.. fabulous.

Dinu Lipatti was masterful, and if you listen carefully to him playing Bach, you can hear how a young Glen Gould could have been inspired. He died much too soon.

My favorite Chopin interpreter was Pollini ... was ... because since I have heard Lipatti play Chopin, I am sold. This is fabulous and I seem to 'know' where he takes me: to where life is, the same place where Bresson, Tarkowski, and Bergman take me with their cinematographic endeavors ...

Excellent performance! His playing showed a lot of emotions and articulations which the pianists nowadays would not really care about! He emphasized on the fz which Chopin took really serious about it!

I bought Emi`s cd of this about 1993 and have since then refused to listen any other version of this wonderful work of Chopin. I wrote in the booklet then "Magic 14:30-15:40" and still the beauty & grace of that special moment (and every moment on this 1st movement of unique beauty) amazes me. After hearing this over hundred times, I am just so grateful of this gem !

Marvellous to hear this in really excellent sound, doing fine justice to a full-blooded performance. The bass especially (including some extras from Lipatti?) is extra sonorous, much better than what i remember of the commercial issue. I like many touches but especially the wistful return of the second theme (about 13.50). For me, Lipatti was the most natural of Chopinists; thank heavens this recording survived.

The sound in this remastered version is absolutely wonderful.The old EMI release which I have is not a patch on this. If it is available on the market I would love to get it. His pianism and his articulation are as always amazing but he manages to avoid that cold clinical sound. Such a shame such a talent was lost so early.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to approve of how he plays the sforzandos. It's so much more passionate that way and I'm astounded by some of the ignorance towards them in some interpretations. However, I'm also astounded that they took a cut in the orchestral exposition. There's absolutely no reason for it and I'm sure it wasn't sanctioned by the composer.
@Iamwisewoman
@Iamwisewoman 8 жыл бұрын
I think people used to be more liberal with cutting. But also, let's face it, the orchestra is the weakest part of this lovely work
@gtimny
@gtimny 6 жыл бұрын
Up until the 1960s, when the follow the composer's intentions movement really took hold, this cut in the orchestral intro was very commonly made. Same with repeats, even in the Beethoven Sonatas which would be absolute sacrilege nowadays. The legendary Gould recording of the Bach Goldberg Variations from 1955 is missing all the repeats...
@pianomaly9859
@pianomaly9859 2 жыл бұрын
In the recording issued on VAI of Josef Hofmann playing this concerto, the same cut is also made. JH ignores the opening sfz's, and the booklet notes rationalize this, but that's a fight I'd rather not have my dog in. Same cut in Rosenthal's recording, too.

The remastering here has not been released. The closest thing to it was released by Archiphon; while that Italian set you speak of 'ripped off' the Archiphon transfers of the two Chopin Etudes, they did not for the Concerto - it sounds like the EMI version.

I started listening to many pianists, playing this concerto, and finished very few of the renditions. The best interpretations just repeat Lipatti's approach: tempo, dynamics, nuances, intonations, all his findings. They take this rendition as a model, for examples, Olga Scheps. The other renditions are uninteresting or even horrible, for example, rendition of Daniel Barenboim. Please, tell me, who called him a "genious" musician? May be, somebody deaf?

I handled the authentic material myself and am the only person who had access to EMI's files where I saw (and photocopied) the whole process that led to the release of the erroneous tape (they did not know it wasn't Lipatti but they used very poor judgment for sure - more details in the article). Wow, the sound is fantastic - much better than my CD from early 1990. I grew up with the EMI LP from mid 1960 - the one claiming Lipatti, but actually was Czerny-Stefanska. I liked her attention to detail, and her pianistic playing, but IMHO the orchestra and the pianist never really played together. The orchestra and pianist had their own sense of musical flows. I had not been able to listen to the LP for about 10 years when I bought the CD, but what I heard was so obviously different from my memory that I knew it had to be a different recording. Poor sound quality, but a heavenly performance. And most notably, orchestra and pianist are making music together - all musical lines flow uninterrupted between soloist and orchestra. In my mind, there must be more to the mixup then is mentioned. The recordings simply are too different.

I am not sure about the "improved" sound. No offense, but any electronic processing cannot but alter the original sound; even the very recording process, without any amplifications, manipulations or "improvements" introduces an unavoidable alteration. The only authentic music is the one heard in the concert hall, directly from the musicians. It is debatable whether one should ban recordings; that would deprive humankind, and especially young musicians of treasures like this. But on the other hand, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and their musical worlds existed and thrived without any artificial recording.

Apart from the cantabile tone, higher respect for sforzato markings (as others have noted), and the technique, there's IMO little to root for in this performance. 02:53 is played like Lipatti were an Indy 500 contestant, and abrupt tempi changes such as 11:03 can hardly be considered organic or natural, or even observant of the score. Just looking at the timing for the Romanza, I know I can hardly bear it; hardly anyone these days seems to take Chopin's indicated MM=80 marking seriously, and anything slower than Heinrich Neuhaus or Marek Drewnowski in that mvt just flows poorly and fails to convince me.
Chopin Piano Concerto No.1 in E minor op.11. Dinu Lipatti's great interpretation.
