DIO HAD NO CLASSICAL TRAINING!! HE was born with a gift! HE SANG FOR GROUPS: ELF, RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, DIO, HEAVEN HELL. A true METAL GOD/ICON.

He played the trumpet as a kid and said he used the breathing he learned and trained up for that for his singing. Which is very interesting.

@@Fedorevsky He was apparently quite good at playing the trumpet as well and did paid gigs when he was a teen but when he found out about rock´n roll that was it. He always sounded great when singing even on the early recordings so he probably was a natural.

You have to check out one of Dio's best vocals performances, Rainbow live in Munich 1977 performing Mistreated. You can also check out Stargazer by Rainbow, thats another one where Dio sings very incredible. I mean he is always incredible but still these are awesome. Killswitch Engage made a cover of Holy Diver, for a Vocal Coach I believe it is worth checking out as well, Howard Jones's vocals are amazing too. Dio himself also liked that cover.

I don’t get why none of the reactors/vocal coaches have ever looked at this “Mistreated” it’s probably the best example of his live performance. The studio tunes are ok, but they are missing out with Mistreated

100% agree, "Mistreated" live in Munich and "Stargazer" (studio version) are a must when listening to Ronnie James Dio, not to mention Ritchie Blackmore's guitar and song composition.

Stargazer, last in line, straight through the heart, children of the sea or sign of the southern cross etc etc can’t go wrong with Dio. There’s a video of him singing with a symphony that’s worth checking out also

For Dio Rainbow Stargazer is a must, Heaven and Hell, The Last in Line, Rainbow in the Dark. This is is a nice song, but about 20 percent of his musical and vocal range

Rainbow in the Dark is my fav. All the Fools Sail Away is my sleeper pick. Dio also replaced Ozzy in Black Sabbath, joined Ritchie Blackmore in Rainbow, & formed Heaven & Hell after everything else. There are many hits among all his works. I'm sure everyone can suggest their favs from these here in the comments.

Hell.yeah brother, welcome to Dio. What you miss here vs his live performances are his skills as a frontman/performer. They broke that mold when they made Ronnie.

This is a great song. All of Dio’s work is very impressive, although I find what he did in rainbow to be his hardest songs vocally, namely stargazer and gates of Babylon. Dio was also in Black Sabbath after ozzy. Dio’s voice did change a bit as he aged, but he didn’t lose anything like a lot of his contemporaries did. Even at the very end he could still impress. One of his last songs, bible black by heaven and hell, is worth a listen.

Saw all the recommendation down below, I believe that "Stargazer" by Rainbow is the most iconic Dio song. It`s strange to see that a vocal coach starts his Dio journey not with "Stargazer" first.🧐

Dio, Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson are generally regarded as the three headed dragon of the best metal voices. Due to be the youngest of three, Dickinson himself was heavily influenced by some of Dio’s earlier stuff.

I saw him live for this tour 3 times, same with Last in Line and Sacred Heart tours, every show was great. a vocal powerhouse and a genuinely nice man. His stage shows were always entertaining, a few he had a large animatronic dragon that he would "battle" on stage.

Stargazer is definitely the place to go next. Not solo, but while Dio was part of Rainbow, which was Ritchie Blackmore's project (Deep Purple).

He credits is vocal/breath control to playing trumpet in the school band. He was asked once by a fellow metal/rock singer about his pre-show warmup, did he do anything special, his response, a glass of wine, half a joint and hit the stage, saying "If you have to warm up, you don't have it"

He was one of the greatest vocalists to have ever lived. You need to watch something else then this. Mistreated Rainbow Live in Munich 1977. The greatest vocal performance in rock history. You won’t believe your ears.

You should check out heaven and hell, Wacken 2009. That's him with black Sabbath, the whole old crew, and less than a year before his death. It's a magnificent show. Seeing four guys in their 60's, and Dio with terminal stomach cancer, absolutely knock the show out of the park. You should check out any song from that set, it's amazing.

😄 videos of that era are hilarious! The one thing I remember of the 80s is how bad the tone was in almost every band recording. I love Dio so much and have seen him so many times. Recorded tone was never the same live ( thank god ). Live, the music punched you in the gut, not pierce your ears with that tinny sound. His last album with Heaven And Hell ( formally Black Sabbath ) is simply AMAZING. Check them out.

One of the reasons I loved Dio with Tony and Geezer was because their albums were engineered so well, compared to many earlier Sabbath albums with Ozzy. The same goes for the Dio albums. I can crank them up on the home theater or the 2000 watt monster in my car, and they hold up well at high volume levels.

Great reaction! About his pronuncing of the word light, there is more of english inspired ponuncing in his singing. I think R J Dio was very much inspired by the British metal scene and British culture and he also collaborated with many British musicians through his carreer.

This is a certified banger, but not the best one for a vocal analysis. Heaven and hell live, stargazer live, and rainbow in the dark live. All the older original live versions. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!!!

Dio's, always, been a great singer; however, there's a wonderful, Lounge version of this done by Pat Boone. It's, almost, better than Dio's..., almost. Also, consider listening to his live versions where he's much more emotive with his singing. (As for how he handles a sword, c'mon, garden gnomes are taller than Dio. He needs both hands on the hilt to have any hope of holding it up!) ;)
