Viewers suggested that we give a listen to Black Sabbath without Ozzy, so we decided on "Heaven and Hell" featuring Ronnie James Dio. This is a good song, but different (at least to us) from early Black Sabbath.
Video used in this reaction: • Black Sabbath - Heaven...
This is a reaction video for the purposes of comment, criticism, and education about the song and artist. We believe these videos provide additional free exposure to new audiences for the artist and will drive additional views to the original video.

recorded end of 79-early 80, released April of 80. Dio had spent a few years with Rainbow so he was pretty well known in the day. I was 16 when this came out and have been hooked on DIO every since. His solo career and concert tours are legendary. Check out live from the spectrum in 1984 or 1986, you'll see what I mean. 5'-2" giant. I never heard it on the radio.

At the time with Dio, Ozzy was pushed out of the band beforehand. The drummer, Bill Ward, decided to leave halfway through their tour, so he was replaced by Vince Appice. I think Dio had the perfect voice, and Ozzy was a great showman, but his voice does work for Sabbath. Dio's songs with Sabbath were mostly darker and slower-paced. If you want to hear more of Dio, try the song Kill The King by Rainbow, a faster-paced song that I think Coach may enjoy. Also, the song many people say is the best is Stargazer, also by Rainbow.

Do believe this was 1980. Ronnie James Dio did two albums with Sabbath before going out on his own with DIO. He came back in to Sabbath later on, then went back on his own and ended with Heaven and Hell which was essentially Black Sabbath before he unfortunately passed away. Ronnie had been doing music since way back in the 50's as a Doo Wop band believe it or not. This was and still is played on rock stations. Some of DIO's most popular songs are Holy Diver, Rainbow in the Dark, Last in Line and We Rock. Don't Talk to Strangers is my fav. Before Black Sabbath he sang in Richie Blackmores Rainbow. Ronnie had the best metal vocals ever.

Imagine what WE went through in 1980 when we first heard this. It was quite a shock, but I loved it on first listen in 80. This was far better than the last 2 Black Sabbath albums (Technical Ecstasy, Never Say Die were to me, stinkers) I was blown away by this album, the song writing, the performances, and RJD.(RIP) Besides it's only one song you've heard from RJDs stint in Black Sabbath. Try Sign Of The Southern Cross from the Mob Rules album. A heavier guitar you'll never hear. Fun reaction.

Sorry, this idolization of Dio is ridiculous . Dio’s early work was standard rock n roll, it wasn’t hard rock, much less metal . Dio was a hard rock singer for Blackmore’s Rainbow and with his own band .I never cared for his style or his voice . He wasn5 the founder of anything , much less some kind of “ god” . I always found him a ridiculous figure and his vocals very affected ….Dickinson was a good vocalist for Iron Maiden’s style, but Halford’s voice was shot by the mid 80s

Answering your question about Ozzy? He was let go by other members of Black Sabbath. Because he had serious addictions affecting the band. Ozzy went on his solo career starting out with his "brother", late great guitarist, Randy Rhoads. Dio was with another band prior joining Black Sabbath, Band was Rainbow with Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple fame. RJD started out in late 1950's singing Doo-Wop music in groups. Then mid to late 60's, Ronnie James Dio joined Elf then Electric Elf or Elves. Ritchie Blackmore, guitarist/founder of Deep Purple put DP on break (disbanded). He founded Rainbow. Dio joined Rainbow until he went to Back Sabbath. Then he went to solo career until his untimely death in 2010.

The reason for the difference in sound is the change in songwriting style. Ozzy's melodies were based on singing the riffs Toni Iommi would play on guitar. Given that Iommi was/is the GOAT of riff-writing and that Ozzy's voice was so distinct that he could sing with it while still being clear and distinguishable, this was a great recipe for success. However, it does make the sound a bit harsher and more compressed. By contrast, Dio's melodies were sung on chords, which allowed more musical room for the guitar and bass to breathe, leading to a more classically beautiful sound (which is where I think y'all are getting the feelings of sanitized or mellow from). There's no wrong answer as to which version one prefers; it all comes down to personal preference. I was very much an Ozzy-era guy when I was younger, but the more I listened to the Dio-era stuff, the more it grew on me to the point where I prefer the Dio-lineup now. It's all great though; no such thing as bad Black Sabbath, IMO.

There were a lot of forces behind that including his out of control addictions, dysfunctions, Sharon's father Don Arden wanting to push him out, and the band themselves not wanting to work with him anymore. You mention this song is more "mellow". I assure you if you would bother to listen to more than just one song during the Dio era of Sabbath, you would find they had very hard rocking songs with him. I'd dare to say that the Dehumanizer album they did with Dio in 1992 was one of the heaviest since Ozzy's departure.

I am a Dio fan all the way. Ozzy is great but I really like him better when he left Black Sabbath and went solo. I know I know that is sacrilege for a lot of people. Everyone has the right to love the music that moves them. Great video. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Dio went through the whole " BAN IT!" He's a devil worshipper or satanic panic along with everyone else who happened to be singing about various religions and faiths and philosiphy's and yes the medevil mandolin your hearing at the end was a aprt of the original. No in the begining it did NOT get a lot of radio play.It's not mellow it sounds like OPERA which Dio's voice is perfect for. Ozzy's voice is rough and UNTRAINED Dio has has training. That's the polished sound your getting. DIO could do OPERA, without a microphone and while he may not be able to fill modern style stadiums with his voice, old style OPERA theaters you could still hear him at the back of the house without one. Ozzy ( while I love him too ) could not do that and sound pitch perfect. BOTH were good in their own right it just hit different and arguably the subject matter is slightly different which will change the tone.

Ozzy was done. He left the band twice during the recording of the previous two albums, then pretty much mailed it in. Sabbath would have died had they not made the change. Getting kicked out was the best thing that could have happened to Ozzy. His solo career was/is immense. If it matters, Iommi has stated he could do things musically with Dio that was impossible with Ozzy.

For me when it comest to Dio, i found that his music became better as i slowly went back in time over the years. I Started listening to Dio somewear between 2010 and 2012, and at that time i mostly listen to the 80's and some of the 90's material. Some years later i discovered that before the 80's he also was the vocalist in a band called Rainbow and as i listened to that band, i found that i enjoyed some of the songs more then the 80's material. Where I am at now is a band called ELF, Which i started listening to last year. And at the moment my favouritte album that i've ever heard with Dio Is: Trying to burn the sun, by ELF which was released in 1975

Hello! I think that Dio was at his best in Rainbow. Their tandem with Ritchie Blackmore (one of the founders and leading guitarist of Deep Purple) was a unique one - Blackmore's music and Dio's lyrics just found each other. If you want to hear Dio at his height, I highly recommend you to listen and react to Mistreated (Live in Munich 1977) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/abiZfa6mvtzdYKc.html You won't regret. It's a Deep Purple song, but Dio sings it differently and extremely beautifully.

Yes, this production is different from their outputs with Ozzy. A bit more polished. I think it's good that this differ a lot from their earlier stuff. Dio is a very technical singer, always sounding great. Ozzy are more bluesy, and original in his tone. It helps digesting the different styles if you think of the two lineups as different bands. Both great in their own way.

Yes, Tony is Black Sabbath since he is by far the only member that has been in the band the entire time and also of course his riffs are an essential part of what Black sabbath is. The albums with Tony Martin on vocals is great too but that is also a different era.

The story was Ozzy was drinking so much the band had no choice but to replace him in 1979, and When Sharon Osbourne became his manager she worked hard at getting him sober enough to function and do his solo album he has had back slides here and there but he has been able to perform for the most part without canceling shows or missing weeks in the studio. Have you heard Ozzy sing Black Sabbath "Changes" ? That is the song that to me showed Ozzy's voice the best.

Black Sabbath's great versatility was due to the lead guitarist Tony Iommi's creative genius. He is also the one who hired the other band members. Ian Gillan from Deep Purple followed Dio and then the criminally underrated Tony Martin, and they all were great. Ozzy was fired for not pulling his weight due to excessive drug use. I suggest When Death Calls from the Tony Martin era. Also, Symptom of the Universe and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath from the Ozzy era are excellent. The Devil Cried from the Dio era is outstanding.

For metal fans like me, this album with Dio in Sabbath was like a Christmas present, because shortly after Blizzard of Oz came out, and we essentially got two great bands that were arguably better than those who preceded them. Some of what you're calling polished is of course technical, but it is also a product of maturity in the musicians themselves, and an expression of what they wanted to be doing and produce. By this time, Sabbath could dictate its own sound, allowing the band to move in the creative direction they wanted to. This wasn't an air play album, but it did get out there in spits and spurts, and we heard it, and we bought it.

Im actually a little surpriced to hear that Dio didnt make and impression on you since he in my opinion at least is just that kind of singer that would make you go wow and in many peoples and also famous metal singers/artists he is the greatest metal singer of all time and has influenced many many singers. Black sabbath with Dio is a bit like a different band and i think they even intended to call it something different but the record company wanted the proven brandname. The dynamics certainly changed since Dio wrote all lyrics, before almost all lyrics were written by the bassplayer and Dio could also write music and had played bass for many years in bands before while also singing, Ozzy didnt write much in Sabbath, i think he did vocal melodies mainly.

@Stefan-
@Stefan- 4 ай бұрын
@@JamShack817 The point of the Holy diver cover was to question what you see and not judge the book by the cover, is it a devil drowning a priest or is it the other way around (all from the mouth if Dio himself in interviews). Dio also said that his lyrics are usually metaphors for things in reality but made so that they can be interpreted by the listener to make the song their own. I also think that Geezer wrote great lyrics but i really love Dio´s lyrics very very much since i have always interpreted them and made them my own and they mean a lot to me, and he did write a lot of lyrics that empowered me in a positive way like the song Stand up and shout for example. These kind of lyrics may seem stereotypical at the surface if you dont interpret them but Dio was probably one of the first to write metal lyrics like this when he started doing that in the 70´s in Rainbow, many have followed his example both as a singer/frontman and songwriter.
@JamShack817
@JamShack817 4 ай бұрын
he was a very gifted songwriter kind person and gifted singer i will take more time to interpret the lyrics as i haven't listened to it enough to understand what he was putting forth. I loved him in the scorpions. people get stuck in their own era of music and don't take time to let it grow on them a little bit. I write a little but nothing like the musicianship writing and skill of that man. sorry if i sounded negative. @@Stefan-

@@JamShack817 No problem i understand, im a huge Dio fan, he is number 1 to me so i know a lot about him and have also listened to him very very much since i became a fan in the 80´s. I often hear/read people saying "but he only wrote about dragons and wizards etc" that is why i answered the way i did since people that think that that is all it is are really missing out in my opinion and kind of missing the point even which i think is a real pity. Dio was never in The Scorpions though, you are confusing him with Klaus Meine. If you want to see a great interview where Dio speaks about the lyrics and Holy diver cover himself among other things, search for "Interview With Ronnie James Dio In Belgium, August 2005" here on youtube, i actually found it yesterday myself.

Ozzy was not the lyricist in Sabbath (the song lyrics had been primarily written by Geezer Butler - the bassist). When Dio joined - after having left Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow - he took-on most all the lyric responsibilities during his tenure in Sabbath. There are 2 camps - Ozzy and Dio but Dio is by far the superior vocalist between the 2. Preferences related to style is another conversation to be had

Ozzy left because he was doing to many drugs.. Tony talked about it in an interview.. Tony got upset because Ozzy started going back stage during the guitar solos and wouldn't come back in time so it left the band stranded where they had to improvise until he came back... Fortunately Ozzy got his act together eventually... The other issue they had is the band was always trying to reinvent themselves and Ozzy wanted to just keep pumping out the original sound they started with... Eventually Tony agreed that Ozzy was probably right in that argument...

I actually really like Dios voice, especially on some of his solo-stuff and in Rainbow (a group he had with Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple), but Sabbath with Dio is just something else than Black Sabbath. To me Sabbath has always been with Ozzy, so I pretty much regard this as a different group (even though they share the name). Not worse or anything like that, just something completely different. Ozzy was kicked out due to his behavior resulting from substance abuse. He was really bad at the time and they chose to move on with Dio. The Dio Era was great as well. Im a little partial to the Ozzy Era because I grew up on it. RIP Ronnie James Dio
