Love Nene's read of Dionne. "Arguing with a 70 year old woman doesnt look right."

Why doesn't it look right? Why was there even a round-table discussion about the creation of this book?! Why was Marlee there If ms Warwick didn't want to listen?! Arguments are a vital and integral part of the decision making processes.

I don’t see how that was a read...if anything, it was the truth. Why would you want to argue with a 70 something yr old woman. I don’t think Nene was trying to be messy with that comment and there wasn’t anything messy about it. Reminds of the time when I wanted so badly to go off on this elderly white woman at my job but her being so old and with people being around us, it just didn’t look right, so I just hurried her ass up and got her out my face

If you think about it, the irony of it is that children are more quick to accept people who are different because they really just want somebody to play with. They don't place too much emphasis on things like this the way older people do. As someone else has said, it's all about your approach. The reason many people view deafness as a horrible thing is because that's what they were taught. If we teach children about it, then they'll know and be prepared when they are in that kind of situation.

I cant watch this without getting so mad. dionne was so ignorant, and children need to be exposed to disabilities so that they will be more accepting later in life. think about it, if a kid sees someone in a wheelchair or something at a grocery store, they stare because its not normal. if we made it normal then kids wouldnt stare. marlee is such a strong woman and im inspired by her each day. a book with a deaf character is a GREAT idea, and there needs to be more of them for children.

In my opinion, that was a complete low blow by Dionne and I don't blame Marlee one bit for being angry. Marlee never struck me as a pity seeker. In fact, she seems to revel in her deafness and she plays the hand she was dealt very well. I see nothing wrong with making a children's book with a deaf character to educate children about it. Just because one is a "music legend" doesn't mean she's always right.

Wow, Dionne is really ignorant. Not only was she insulting for saying that being deaf is sad, she also didn't seem to understand how an interpreter works. She didn't realize that when Jack spoke, he was voicing what Marlee signed. Plus, she didn't even look at Marlee when speaking to her. Not maintaining eye contact while talking to a deaf person is really rude. There should be more books for children that help them understand that being different is ok.

Dionne doesn't understand that children accept diversity, and very quickly too. It is people who are set in their ways that have trouble being around others who are "different". But also she doesn't understand how capable deaf people are as individuals. Deaf people are very resilient and independent. Her comments are just offensive and upsetting.

The normally pretty calm and collected Marlee was ready to whoop some ass. As an interpreter for a deaf 5 year old, yeah, I wanted to be there to back Marlee up. Kids won't understand... pssh. kids understand more at that young of an age than we do as adults. Their minds are so broad and not influenced by society. I see it everyday with a classroom full of them.

I can understand Marlee frustrations because I too have a disability what's wrong with people having disabilities we may not be able to do everything the same way as everybody else but we also find a different way to do it and we cope with that we learn to accept that I think it's good that Marlee wanted to do a book with a character that had a disability because that way kids would learn that nobody is the same everybody is different but everybody is also special in their own way this really made me. Anger I could just see marlee's frustrations in her face. :(

When you tell kids in front of them that it is something that they can't handle or shouldn't talk about they start to think that there is a reason for it. Like it is something scary or bad. It is not. Prejudice exists because fear is passed on from generation to generation.

You mean like the child who's born deaf can't handle it? The kid who's new kindergarten classmate is deaf can't handle it? Frankly, adults have a bigger problem with so-called disabilities than kids do. If you lead them by example, most kids will follow. And they can handle a LOT more than we give them credit for. Don't believe me? Think of all the kids in much more dangerous parts of the world. They may not be happy go lucky always, but they handle much worse things than deafness. Every day.

It's Just That Simple.....R. E. S. P. E. C. T! Marley Maitland has been fighting for those who are deaf. I have had friends who are half deaf or it's suffered with temporary deafness. I even was proud take care of patients who are deaf and I learned to sign language. It has helped me throughout my life knowing how to sign. I suggest to all Americans learn how to do sign language? You'll never know when you might be helpful to a wonderful people who has a disability of deafness!!!

Yes, but Marlee embraces who she is. She's Deaf and she's PROUD of that. That's probably why she wanted a deaf character in the book. Deaf people exist and so do deaf animals..so why would it be wrong to include one in the book? The world needs to be exposed to things like this early or they won't be able to accept it later, like another KZfaq user stated previously.[hearing] people view being deaf as "sad" or something to pity..it's not.

Kids can handle a lot some people underrate children's abilities to adapt because they themselves are afraid of change. The way you introduce something new is very important. When you teach children about different cultures or types of people you are the one who sets the tone. Will they see a person who is weak or should be pitied or will they see it as a possible friend that has limitations (like some who can't walk or can't see), but is still a person who has thoughts and feelings just like e

May I remind you that sesame street is aimed at children as young as 2? or even younger. Exposing young children to diversity, shows them that their are alot of different people in this world and exposing them to it young will help them realize and tolerate and understand it unlike close-minded Dionne

People think Dionne was being condescending to the disabled, hearing impaired people. She said it’s sad in the aspect of it would make the children sad because you’re exposing them to something as serious as a person who is hearing impaired it will make them feel sorry for that person. I get the other side of the disagreement tho they’re trying to expose children to the fact that not everyone in the world is exactly like them or has all 5 senses. There’s no right or wrong to this it’s just tooor communication and understanding on BOTH sides.

Dionne Warwick is correct her! First of all she was being disrespected! Secondly, she was correct! I understand what people are saying about teaching a child this or that! But, life is hard and children do NOT need to be exposed to EVERY single reality or unpleasantry of Life at Age 3 and 4! Children do NOT need to learn about what is PC and what is not just to make Society feel comfortable! These are children! Society needs to allow this woman to be children! They can learn about such realities of life later on! What is the rush?!?! Don't Rob these children of their childhood by making them grow up too fast and learn about things that they don't need to really learn about or try to comprehend at such a young age! You are robbing children of their innocence! I really hate how Society is today! The one thing I love about my family and those that they allowed into our Circle, was that they were very watchful as to the sort of things that I was exposed to and when I was exposed to them! They ensured that I was allowed to be a child! They ensured that I was exposed to various things at the appropriate age! Now they want children to be exposed to all sorts of things basically right out of the womb! Society is just crazy and you really do have to be Vigilant when it comes to what and when your children are exposed to various realities of life! This is so sad as such things used to be viewed as being common sense!!!
