I made a small epoxy lens last year, that was less than successful, and wanted to take another crack at it!
This time, I burned through 58 ounces of resin and took over 1 month with 3 attempts to try and finally get it right!

I thought for a second from the title that you were going to dip an actual store-bought magnifying glass in epoxy. Your results are impressive!

+Lilly Dragon I don't think much would happen, it would lose all it's curve and just be like putting a piece of glass in resin.
@jordibear
@jordibear 8 жыл бұрын
+brikhouse22 Incorrect. The refractive index of resin is higher than that of glass. So assuming you used glass/perspex magnifying glass, then the light would still refract at the boundary between resin and glass, thereby giving the same effect. That would be pretty cool imo, as it on it's surface, it would be a non convex magnifying glass.

thanks for picking up my suggestion.. also I'm not an expert, but I think that the hard kind of mold is causing the slightest of warping in the resin.. I have another idea you might wanna try.. make a ring of wood that you can later prop at a height, or even a perfectly round bowl will do. cut off the neck of a balloon, and carefully stretch it over the edge of the bowl.. hold it down firmly using packing / duct / painters tape.. probably spray a little mold release.. then slowly let the polymer flow in through the sides, like touch the pouring container to the balloon and let the resin flow in slowly, coz when poured from higher, more bubbles are caused, and if it rolls, chances are that the bubbles get time to rise up before they reach the bottom.. happy trying again.. and hope for sunshine or some really bright incandescent light

I love you breaking into song in the rain... You are hilarious! I have binge-watched your videos this weekend. You are awsome! I love your 'weakness' for unconventional materials. I've got about 100 ideas for casting epoxy/resin blanks, but I have no idea what to do with them after. I don't think the tools at my disposal (a whitteling knife and some odd sheets of sand paper) are ideal for making cool things. What striked me as funny is regardless of medium, us makers/crafters are all hoarders of materials, and refrain from using our finer materials because we don't want to 'waste' them. They just sit in boxes/shelves/wherever, being pretty.

You're such a talented guy. Crafty, comical, and a good singer. Lol. :) So I keep noticing that you use a torch to remove the bubbles from epoxy. Is it just the heat from the flame that does it? Do I have to use a torch to accomplish this or can I use a little torch lighter or grill lighter. I also heard about using a hair dryer. I also seen a video of a guy who used acetone. I'm trying to save money on a project and wanted to see if I couldn't use what I already have at home. I'm glad I saw what happens if you mix over 6oz. of epoxy together. If that would have happened to my project. I would have thrown it across the room and cried. It looks like a very permanent mistake. But yeah. Let me know. Thanks. :)
@peterbrownwastaken
@peterbrownwastaken 8 жыл бұрын
+Julie Gamble I just saw your post on Facebook. Sorry, I get a lot of email, I promise I wasn't intentionally ignoring you. Best I can tell the heat, makes the resin more viscous and allows bubble to flow up to the surface easier. BUT you can also over-do it and cook it. It will then bubble and harden up and there is no going back. I like the flame over the hot air, as it doesn't make waves. I use a propane torch but I have used a lighter. It just takes a bit longer!

I spent a year working on this. The best resin is Clear Acrylic. The best way to make a lense/mirror is to put it on a rotating disk. You'll need to work out how fast to rotate it depending on the focal length and diameter of the lense/ mirror. Stepper motors work great, connected up to a function generator. There's probably other ways you can do it too. Also the best way to polish it is to do it manually, because you end up with a far better result. It's a lot slower of course, but it will come close to amateur astronomical standards depending on the diameter and focal length.
