I've been dipped by Mr. Greg Koch! 29.9/30 - I'll take it! The reverb unit absolutely acts as another gain stage, much like an Echoplex or Space Echo. There's really nothing like it. Thanks guys!

Interesting conversation about loudness. I was at the Kock-Marshall trio gig last night and they completely rocked. It was LOUD! Even with earplugs. My ears were already a little fried from my Friday night gig, but my ears were still ringing a little after the show. Maybe 20 feet from the stage. I left my house and forgot earplugs and then circled back to get them. Don't get me wrong, it was a great show with stellar playing, but I wouldn't have enjoyed it without the plugs. The people sitting at the tables in front of me were visibly in pain. Its tough to get it right - as you still what the sound to project to the back of the club.

Great interview. I've been fortunate enough to see Greg play since he was 16(probably 150 times). The progression has been impressive. I've been playing guitar for about 44 years. He is the best all around guitarist I've ever seen. There is no style he doesn't excel at. Gristle King!

Yo huge shoutout to Wildwood guitars. Went up to the old showroom with my dad all the time back in high school (10ish years ago now) - still have a Gibson-347 I bought there used with my summer camp counselor money. Glad to hear Greg mention Steve Mesple (the original curator of Wildwood), he was always really cool to me even as a clueless kid. I understand why the new showroom isn’t open to the public, but I really miss going in there. Steve remembers EVERYONE’S name, and it was great going in there to shoot the shit with him and Lance and Bruce.

For my first big concert I saw the Allman Brothers at the Congress Zentrum in Hamburg in the fall of 1980. Behind the stage Marshall 4x12s with JBLs were stacked up. No way those were fed by just one amp head. More like three for Dickey and three for Dan Toler.

Speaking about Fender amps... Back in the late 70s there was this little device that plugged into the reverb/trem footswitch jacks on Fender amps. I think they were called Ice Cubes. Couple those with Les Pauls or SGs with Dimarzio SD pups, and you had something going. Just around the time Boogies came out.

JBL stuff: D series were the originals, made with Alnico magnets; you COULD blow them with a high headroom amp (Orange OR100 or HiWatt D103). The E series had ceramic magnets and could handle more power. The final solution is K series, which were higher power but D-series alnico design.

Re: Stage volume, concert sound in the old days. I started going to live shows in 1971. I saw the The WHo, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Queen, many of the classic bands. From what I remember, the sound for the audience at shows varied a lot. (It's much more consistent now) It depended on the band, and the venue mostly. The bands I listed above all sounded great the times I saw them. The Who carried their own P.A around with them, complete with elaborate monitors and side fill speakers, all by a company named WEM in the early 70s. They didn't trust the venues to provide top shelf P.A.'s that could handle their very high volume, and rightly so! This way they were in total control, and they had a GREAT live sound then. Zeppelin sounded terrific too. I remember hearing everything. The Fillmore East was a great concert hall that had a reputation for having a great PA and great sound. Thats why so many people recorded live albums there too. That Cream show Greg Koch mentioned was a bit notorius for its shitty sound. My best buddy went to that show and despite being a huge Cream fan, he thought the sound really sucked. And he was a kid, so it really must have sucked for a kid with no experience to notice. It was roll of the dice back then, but I think most people adapted pretty well, because that was the only game in town at the time. They found a balance between the loud guitar amps and the PA for drums and vocals. THey worked it out, from venue to venue, night by night.

Several things - really enjoyed the interview with Greg Koch. Your Sweetwater show with your guest list is awesome. Regarding Sweetwater, I’ve bought several guitars from them and couldn’t be happier. My latest acquisition was a Gibson ES-335, not a cheap guitar. I chose a specific one based on the detailed photos the sales engineer sent me and the weight. When I received it I was blown away; the maple top had beautiful flame and it sounds awesome. The setup was great. Lastly, Zach, I bought a Mythos SusMaryOsep and love it. Keep up the great work you guys!

Such a great episode. Greg is always an amazing guest on whatever type of media it is. A couple takeaways I had were- 1. Please stay strong Rhett. Tube screamers suck and everyone will try to change your mind. I’m with you 2. That was possibly one of the coolest rigs I’ve seen in a while. I’m incredibly jealous of it 3. 4 pro juniors is hilarious to visualize, but also just sounds like a super reverb with extra steps. (I fully support it) 4. I might have to make a 5 hour drive in February to see the trio play…
