Dippin' Dots has famously been marketed as "The Ice Cream of the Future". There was a time where I completely believed that statement but I can admit when I'm wrong. Dippin' Dots filed for bankruptcy in 2011 but have since made a respectable comeback. This video talks about the ups and downs of the business behind this unique product.

To me, the branding of "the ice cream of the future" just serves the fact that they're a charming novelty. Nothing is going to replace ice cream, but dippin' dots have a delightfully retro-futuristic vibe that their tagline just fits perfectly.

Because these ways work good, why does everything have to change? What puzzles me is why we still use expensive and toxic gas in cars when decades ago electric cars, solar cars cars that run on used vegetable oil and even super crazy cars that run on water or other free energy technologies but have been widely suppressed because the gas industry is extremely profitable and they don’t want people using other methods to power there vehicles. All of the technology I just mentioned are cheaper, more efficient and better for human health and environmental health.

Dippin' Dots has always been the best mouth feel experience. Broadwalk Treats at the Fayette Mall in Lexington, KY became one of my favorite places for a cold treat because they serve dippin' dots floats. It's my favorite way to eat them (banana spilt dots with root beer yes please), but it was always hard to eat since it's hard to find a place to sit and eat there.

I think if they could find a way to sell their cryogenic freezers as home appliances for a relatively low cost, the type that looks good as a built-in appliance in the kitchen, I think they'd have a better reputation, and they would take a bigger chunk of the market. As of now, cryogenic freezers still either look like a 1990s copying machine or a jet engine turned on its nose, and no built-in or cheaper options are available.

Shane Keena I like the idea of adding a cryogenic freezer to my kitchen but seems pretty niche maybe offering them to restaurants to sell the ice cream at a lower cost since a lot of the cost is transportation and storage selling to restaurants in bulk would lower the overhead and allow another avenue for sales and a way to potential lower cost which seems the biggest barrier to these

The chain I think of as their spiritual successor is Sub-Zero. They take the storage/transport issues out of the equation by freezing your ice-cream to order with nitrogen. It's a perfect evolution of the "cup and cone" establishment because each customer gets their own custom ice-cream by mixing their flavorings or even choosing an almond milk base. Forget 31 flavors, you've gotta do factorials. I think most people buy pints and tubs at the grocery store, so this kinda of "personal pizza model" is more efficient for an ice cream shop.

Dippin dots just feels special man. You go to a sporting event or the circus or the zoo and they have them and you’re like yessss I haven’t seen you in like 8 months gotta have it.

I remember first hearing about Dippin Dots when I was in elementary school. Then in Jr. High it was super popular, popular enough to open up a store a couple blocks from where I live. Then they closed a couple years later and threw shade at the landlord of the marketplace where their store was, leaving a note at the front door saying that they really badly wanted to stay open, but the landlords would not negotiate a deal with their rent. Crazy times man.

We had them at our mall for awhile when I was younger, but they came in weird packets instead of the cups. Definitely wasn't the same because you not only got less, but the pieces also got stuck and melted together in the corners.

Sure a lot of us have an endless list of foods destined to be tried as children but our parents would not allow a single bite due to price, sugar content or just for no reason other than “we’ve got food at home” Now as an adult we can all become over excited and overwhelmed by the vast amounts of childhood dream foods awaiting exchange of our very own money just to somewhat be underwhelmed by the flavour, taste, price and size of the product we once dreamed of having. Adulthood is a cruel dark place people. What was once a childhood fantasy is now seen as a topia of despair. Parents should’ve let us enjoy that 5 seconds of childhood wonder of tastes before we got to experience an adult palette that appreciates the “finer” things in life and our eyes opened to the “adult vision” of disappointment and disapproval

Ive had dippin dots like three times in my entire life on three completely different occasions that were each a substantial number of years apart, but one thing I am sure of more than anything is that I loved them every single time.

It doesn’t matter if you go to the zoo just once in a lifetime. The zoo is full of plenty of other people going there once in their lifetime, providing plenty of potential business.

The story of Dippin' Dots is a wild story. There's a whole episode where the founder tells his story at the How I Built This With Guy Raz podcast, It's insane how a company that has been around for so long is actually still seeing startup-like volatility.
