LETS TALK DIPSEY DIVERS! Hands down my most effective rods in my great lakes salmon and trout spread are my dipsey divers. In this video I run through my setups for both braid and wire dipsey divers, the rods, reels, and rigs. You don't need fancy lead core, coppers, or downriggers to chase great lakes fish! Send out the dipseys and wait for the rip!

I fish out of Port Washington. I used to go out to 300+ fow and fish Rainbows. That taught me how to set this stuff up. A 20 pound Chinook will bend the rod and fight for about 20 minutes then lay on it's side and come in. A 15 pound Rainbow will break the line and jump out of the water behind the boat laughing at you while it absconds with $30.00 in tackle! Lol. That taught me the importance of rubber snubbers on Dipseys. Then you have a fighting chance. A big Rainbow will fight for an hour and will fight you all the way into the boat! I use Ande's mono on most of my rigs. It works well for me. 15 lb for April and May, 20 lb for the rest of the season. Especially in August when the big Kings hit. On my 18 footer a 15 foot leader on a Dipsey would be a bit excessive. I use Slide divers in Spring to get a longer lead and switch to Dipsey's come June. Then I use about a six foot lead.

Awesome video Noah explaining dipsy divers and the gear you would use with them! Very much appreciated that you took the time to explain and share this information with us in great detail! What height and angle do you prefer the dipsy rod be at, so what would be the lowest and highest angle you would run the rod? I am guessing lowest to the water versus using the lowest rod tube on a rod tree?

Wire rig tip: Tie a 15' 40lb fluoro or mono leader direct to the end of your wire. This will keep ALL the wire in the spool safe from kinking and coiling when changing lures or breaking down rods to transport. I use a nail knot for this, a tiny slip free knot that doesn't care about line diameter difference and will slip through your twilly or roller no problem. I also use 19 strand wire from Torpedo.... so forgiving! That product brought me back to wire by alleviating so many hassles related to wire lines. Thanks for the video. Edited to add: The fluoro or mono leader also acts as a snubber. No break-offs whatsoever in the 8 or 9 years since running this setup.

Great information, if you had to guess based on feel in your hand, how much torque lb wise do the dipsy divers put out? Trying to see if my steel rod holders i use for catfishing would be strong enough for dipsys at 2 mph assuming they are tight to the boat to prevent twisting to the stern?
@MadisonAngling
@MadisonAngling 3 ай бұрын
It's a pretty decent amount of torque, however the dipsey pulling is the least of my concerns - when a big salmon hits one its often very violent and they hit with a lot of speed and power. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hbmFha59rNWdYac.htmlsi=59hWgMk1AC1nmk-N Check out this dipsey hit at the 3:35 mark in this video ☝️

Most charter captains use clear, black or white. Sometimes color makes a difference but the fish see the underside of the dipsey ahead of your lure.

How do you deal with the ‘flea” that builds up on your braid?
@MadisonAngling
@MadisonAngling Жыл бұрын
That is an awesome question. Honestly I just kind of deal with it. Braid and wire are very hard to keep clean, the fleas build up no matter what. The only rods I don't have issues with when it comes to fleas is my downriggers. I have a set for when the fleas are bad with 40lb mono, which is too thick for them to cling to, and a set with 25lb mono when they aren't bad. If you find a way to keep fleas off braid, you be a rich dude

I learned some, but not what I wanted to learn. If I want the dipsey to run let's say 10' deep, 20' 30' and 40', how would I set them to accomplish this? Is it the size of the dipsey, the setting, or what? Thanks.

@@MadisonAngling Let me rephrase the question. If I had 4 identical rods with identical lures, the same exact line and 4 dipsey divers that were identical, could I get them to 4 different depths just by making adjustments? Thanks
@MadisonAngling
@MadisonAngling Жыл бұрын
@@rumbleseat1 yes, by letting out more or less line they will run different depths. Additionally, for example, if you put each out at 100 feet of line, but one is on a "1" setting, and the other is at a "3" setting, the rod at a "1" setting will be quite a bit deeper than the rod on a "3" setting.
