Diru seem to be getting so much more attention from reviewers lately. I couldn't be happier to see them start to gather more attention after becoming a fan during their uroboros days 10 years ago when I was 17. Saw them live first on the kerrang tour and spent the last of my merch money on a T-shirt and a copy of their album. They've been my favourite band ever since.

As many other people have stated, there is only one vocalist in this band. Kyo has one of the most versatile voices in the industry, and it's certainly comparable to Mike Patton's abilities. He has done Death growls, punk, rap, screams... and after all that, he could sing a baby to sleep. Kyo is by far one of the most intense singers in Japan, if not the world.

Dir en grey wasn't on The End in the early 2000s, they didnt have any American distribution until around 2007 and they haven't had any since 2012. This band is truely one that has evolved their sound over the years and disregarded the concept of a comfort zone, they have done everything from pop rock to Nu metal to a lot of progrock/metal to this avant-garde experimental album and all kinds of stuff inbetween. Each album is a departure and something different and if you were to explore their early stuff (songs like Sajou No Uta, KR cube, Yurameki) you wouldn't recognize them based on just this album because they were not avant-garde metal and a lot of their music then wouldn't be classifed as metal. Also, as others have mentioned there is only one vocalist, Kyo, and all five members are male. I don't think they have ever had a female guest vocalist on a song, but I could be wrong about that, Kyo just has a great unexpected range. Kyo didn't start doing harsh vocals like this until sort of around 2007, he did a lot more cleans and shouty harsh yells in the first half of their career. Enjoying your review so far, about half of the way through the video. The album Uroboros (listen to the remixed and expanded one) and parts of the EP The Unraveling (which they took old songs and remade them as influenced by their new sound) are good places to go if you want something similarish to this (as I said each album is a departure), also Kyo's chaotic vocal style is on full display on the 2016 single Utafumi.

Dir en grey can be progressive rock, metalcore, death metal, pop, etc. Depends on the album! The first one is very rock/pop with some heavier tracks, then it gets proggy on the second album, experimental on the next, then nu metal, metalcore, death metal and so on... Glad you liked one of my favorite bands!

Great review and great reactions. I appreciate you being more than a lot of metal youtubers who react to music and say like two words, then are silent the rest of the time. That said, your review really got under my skin in some spots. -I really can't stand how much ragging you gave softer songs like "Lotus" because they were noticeably more poppy and not face-melters like "Different Sense". Even going so far as to say you thought the album was "going down the shitter" at some points. Like, I get it. Personal taste can be a fickle thing, but I don't think those songs deserved that much criticism. They were still very avante-garde, with a lot of changes in instrumentation and tempo. That being said, they weren't written to be as crazy as the other songs on the album. Those songs were written softer and straightforward because there's much more to Kyo as a vocalist than a crazy range. He's a very emotional vocalist that really sings his heart out, and I feel like you just disregarded all of that because it wasn't in the flavor you liked. -I feel like you tried to put the album in a box as you continued listening to it. I agree the album is very avante-garde at first, then gets more straightforward as the album goes on, but it's still avante-garde in the fact that there really wasn't a lot of consistency in anything throughout the album. A great many things kept on changing, even in the poppy and more straightforward songs. By the end of your listen, you tried to say this album is a death metal album, and that's really not accurate at all. This album is avante-garde to the tee. -I feel like your approach to the album was off. You kept mentioning the vocalist and band were creating higher and higher peaks of craziness and intensity, then you kept using prior songs as references to gauge how good the current song was. I feel this is unfair because I think you should treat each song as its own entity and enjoy it as such. Gauging one song based on prior songs on the album isn't right because not every song was written with the same approach. No ill will is meant, just think you were a little unfair and inconsistent in spots. Regardless, great commentary and great review. You earned a subscriber.

Thank you for the criticism, sir! Very well said! I do think this is an avant-garde album--and a very good one at that! Don't forget, you can make requests for future album reactions if you want. Also, remember I'm going to make a lot of mistakes in these videos since I'm pretty much giving my commentary on the fly with very little research into what I'm hearing. I do appreciate the points you made. Thank you for watching and subscribing!!

Metal Album Reactions No problem, man. Really enjoyed your reaction, minor issues aside. As for a recommendation, try Disomus by Through the Eyes of the Dead. Richard Sinclair I really like TTEOTD. I think I listened to the album you mentioned once last year. I think it may have went in one ear and out the other though. I'll certainly add it to the list cause I think it would be a good one for the channel, and because I don't remember much of it. Thanks for suggesting it!

Vanitas is so out of place because it was written for the death of another musician that was very close to Kyo. So you’ve got this sad farewell ballad amongst a sea of tracks that were written and/or recorded during the whole earthquake/tsunami disaster in 2011. By the way, the moment you start reacting to Dir en grey or Gazette, you’re going to notice the j-rock fans slowly start to trickle in asking for more.

I will also say with the song 'vanitas' that I've never physically seen that song live but videos of it show it as such a moving performance. Kyo openly cries often during the performance of this song. It's a song rife with emotion and Kyo often lays that bare live. It's tremendous. I recommend trying to find live versions of this song. It's heartbreaking.

For real. I'm sure most of the fanbase will defend all of his performances to death, but I think he used to have major issues with his live performances (and probably life in general) in the past that he only got over after hitting rock bottom. Having now seen what he's capable of with some discipline and stability in life, I have very little nostalgia for the days when he'd just vaguely sing the words and then self-destruct on stage (think Wacken Open Air 2007). I hate that people still occasionally glorify that period in their history. It wasn't Kyo being a great troubled artist. It was, and I say this as someone who's also gone through dark times, just bad and sad. In contrast, today is a great time to be both Kyo and a Dir en Grey listener.

Thanks for reacting to this :) Like many said, there's no female vocalist, would be interested to know which parts you thought were sung by a woman? I was really wondering ^^''. Had me laugh, though. Thanks for that! They are really a live band, you should definitely check them out live (Maybe go for "Cause of Fickleness" "Revelation of Mankind"or "Uroko" for vocal madness. All three come from their latest Album "Arche". ) They constantly reinvent themselves. Dum Spiro Spero was the first album they experimented with 7 string guitars and the recording was interrupted by the Fukushima incident which lead to a completely different approach to the album. If you do, 2013 was the year his voice was really bad. (he DID nail the Decayed Crow Symphonic Version though, if you want to give that a try!^^) They played close to 180 shows a year during that time, it's no wonder his voice broke as bad as it did. They don't tour THAT much anymore (but Kyo founded a second band....) I noticed you didn't like their ballads very much, so be warned that they are a huge part of the band as well, they are not as you put it to 'show of his vocal abilities". Most of Kyo's lyrics are very metaphorical, their PVs or video installments during lives add different layers to what the lyrics MIGHT mean. You can pretty much approach them as any (modern) poem and if you do it's incredible what you can find. I would go as far as to say that none of their songs were written just to sound good. They are all little pieces of art, triggering different senses ;). Some are highly political. The persona is always fictitious, though. (Multiple songs are told from a female perspective, some through children, teens, even unborn Babys etc.) Someone already mentioned them, but I would really like to see you react to Sigh "In Somniphobia". (Not much of a live band, but AMAZING on CD)
