I appreciate that you put all this info into the video but as someone who already knows most of what you’re saying about the record itself, I just wanted to get to the comparison! Not trying to be rude, just wanted to suggest maybe adding a time stamp for where the actual pressing comparison begins in the description for future comparison videos.

Great stuff Steve! I guess I lucked up getting #344 for my MOFI. I also agree the MOFI is ever so much better, but you can't go wrong with either for an excellent pressing of this album.

Hi once again Steve. I am subscribing from my second YT site also so I can comment from either one depending which one I am logged into at a specific time. I love Dire Straits and I might be going out on a limb but I think any of these high quality pressings will be worth substantial money as time goes on since all the artists you mention in your videos that I brushed over for now and I will watch more in depth as time allows are very high quality artists, whether in classic rock or classic jazz genres and they deserve the ultimate preservation going forward and I worry that each time the original master tape is used for doing yet another transfer, more wear and tear degrading is happening to the tapes, whether analog or digital and the hope is the remastering engineers can extract as many nuances as possible and hope for best alignment and tape to head contact. I know that all music deserves to be preserved for both current and future generations but one genre I still have not accepted (and I am trying to find something I can enjoy from it) is Rap(Hip Hop)!! Possibly I will find either a specific song or artist in the Rap genre I like but it has not happened yet in my music listening world!! Big hugs and thanks for bringing these great and timeless artists the attention they deserve!! Happy weekend and keep making these informative videos!!...Friends, Lloyd.

I apologize Steve for the lengthy writing but I have always had a concern that each time a first generation(or at least the next best available low generation master recording gets a little more degraded by all the latest remastering's plus from the effects of both aging and storage environment effects. I know that as recording technology extraction processes get better for the latest remaster project, a little more degrading is happening to the master recording, sort of like a little "give and take" when obtaining the latest results. Thanks once again and your record review site is awesome!!...Friends, Lloyd.

7:39 Talking about the engineering, etc. This is one of the albums I most want to get on vinyl. My main interest in having albums I love on vinyl is because, for the most part, they were produced using largely analogue processing, and I really think that's what gives vinyl albums the "soul" you don't hear in digital formats. During my research on this album I found out, it turns out "Brothers in Arms" was one of the first albums to employ almost, if not entirely, all digital production (!) Talk about a fart in the face. I actually have a digital copy of a very good vinyl transfer, and... Somehow it still has that "soul." I can't wait to hear how a good vinyl pressing sounds... AT-LP120/cork slip mat/Ortofon 2M Red premounted on headshell > Onkyo TX-NR616 receiver > Pioneer SP-FS52 Andrew Jones Design floor standing speakers (if I only do it in stereo. I could also do it in 7.1 all-channel stereo)

Hi, Steve. I was curious about the Mofi 1/2 speed question, so I sent them an email. They responded, “Hi Greg, thanks for your email. All of our modern 45 rpm LPs are indeed mastered at half speed - anything that bears the “Gain 2” logo or “Mastered on Gain 2 Ultra Analog System” was half speed mastered from the original master tapes. There are only a few exceptions where the original source was digital, like our Run DMC reissue.” Which would seem to indicate this particular title may have been in real time due to the fact that Brothers In Arms is a digital recording. Maybe. 😬 Interesting either way.
@stevewestman7774
@stevewestman7774 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Greg thanks for watching. Unfortunately whoever emailed you at MOFI is not correct. Not all modern MOFI’s that are mastered with the “Gain 2” System are half speed mastered. One of the last half-speed mastered pressing before MOFI switched to real time cutting was Frank Sinatra’s The Concert Sinatra catalog number 1-345. After that 1-346 The Band’s Music from the Pink and all after that were mastered in real time or pretty much around this time. All current 45 rpm One-Steps and current 33 rpm MOFI are mastered in real time using the Gain 2 system. Also, if any albums are mastered by MOFI at 1/2 speed it will say on the album. Run DMC was mastered in real time using the half inch 30 IPS original analogue tapes. MOFI’s 45 rpm one step of Donald Fagan’ Nightfly and Dire Straits 45 rpm cut of Brothers in Arms mastered in real time using the original master tapes which were the original digital master tapes. I hope this helps clear up the confusion. I think I will do a video on this exact topic explaining this to my viewers. Watch for that later this week.

@@homersoddishe not sure if there was a official announcement. Mofi is always running tests to improve their products. It’s a relentless process to always find ways to make things sound better. I guess from all of their tests they felt full speed mastering was better sounding and I agree. Full speed is definitely better for the the bass that’s for sure. 1/2 speed sometime not always can make the acoustics sound better.

I just don’t understand something - when you have a full digital recording, a 24 track digital tape machine mixed to 2 track digital do not operate anything like an analog machine. You cannot run a digital machine at half speed since it’s digital PCM and not analog. Maybe it’s me but it sounds like a lot of hype. The original CD sounded pretty darned good to me.

This album was the first digital recorded album by Dire Straits. It is a beautifull album plenty of diferent wonderfull songs and climates . . it is an almost perfect artistic work. But it does not have the depth, the dimensions and the spatiality of the analog recordings. You can clearly feel the difference listening to their previous albums.

I agrre with the former writer. I miss the in depth statement you make. Further, the master record is also a digital recording 16/44.1, however on tape. So both labels edit in digital. Abby Road from the start in 24/192 as far I read. The order in proces is a little different, but on the end is it the same. In technical aspect, I think Abbey is putting more effort and 45 RPM is preferable. But the goal is the end result and which you prefer in sound quality. More edgie or more smooth as you mentioned. If you have 2 sound engeneers en use exactly the same procedure, you get 2 different sounding products. So comparing is difficult and related to more aspects and personal preferences. But you are enhousiastic, so I am. Thanks Harold

The Abbey Road edition is from the original digital masters as far as I know. I think the Stan Ricker is pretty good too. As iconic as it is, BIA has some dull moments in So Far Away which goes nowhere. It’s a pretty sterile sounding album, the drummer, Omar Hakim sounds like a drum machine and I prefer Pick Withers and Terry Williams. The standout tracks are Your Latest Trick, Ride Across The River and Brothers In Arms itself. I prefer Love Over Gold, Making Movies and the Debut over BIA. The recent Abbey Road Local Hero is from the original digital master. That was recorded on a 3M digital machine. Check out On Every Street double LP which is awesome too.
@SPAZZOID100

No weak songs on this album IMO. “So fat Away” didn’t have to go anywhere as that chorus is gold. Also, Omar is one of the best drummers ever. This is why they hired him.
