George & Patrick. This song was written against the backdrop of the Falklands War, but every Veteran who hears it, claims it for his own. I am a 72 year old Vietnam Vet. I was 18 when I enlisted & some of my schoolmates never returned home to their mothers & fathers, brothers & sisters. I was lucky. This song brings me to tears every time I hear it & always will. I feel so lucky to have grown up in the era of Queen, Dire Straits, Genesis (Phil Collins) Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Rush, and many more iconic bands and solo artists. The Mid 70's through to the 80's was all pure talent. No auto tune, no made up boy or girl bands, no X factor and Britain's got talent (as well as other nations similar programmes). Just pure talent where every song meant something in the lyrics, and everyone played their own instruments. Today's music mostly means nothing, and isn't talent based. Although I do currently love me a bit of Tom MacDonald. He sings with meaning and passion. Very rare. So rare he has to produce, market, distribute and have his own label. Because it's usually going against globalist sentiments, and no promoter will touch him with a bargepole, because of 'cancel culture' that's ruining everything about everything, even comedy and TV.

No one is a bigger Dire Straits/Knofler fan than I am. That song has made me cry many times. It has an eerie doom ridden spirit to it. An emotional lament for all of mankind being basically helpless against powerful and evil powers manipulating world affairs and causing needless wars for their benefit that costs millions of needless deaths.

Brothers in Arms is a beautiful song, very emotional, it was inspired by the Falklands War, which was going on when Mark Knopfler wrote the song. It took place in 1982, gosh, I remember it so well, hard to believe it was 41 years ago, but again, this song is so relevant to what's been going on and is going on in 2022/2023. It's so powerful, George, just overwhelming, gets into your very soul doesn't it? In my opinion, Mark Knopfler is one of the best songwriters ever, he is just amazing with his lyrics and riffs, a fantastic guitarist and singer too. I mentioned in a recent comment another song from the Brothers in Arms album, 'The Man's Too Strong', I think you'd like it, guys, also 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Private Investigations' are other beautiful songs from this amazing band. Thanks so much for your reaction guys, always good, take care now, all the best and stay safe. 😊👍

I was 12 and living behind the Iron Curtain when the song was released. We had a radio station which ran a very popular music list - not based on sales, of course, in the "communist" economy, but on votes sent by postcards by the listeners. "Brothers in Arms" hit the #1 almost immediately and stayed there FOR A YEAR.

Those Top 5, including Knopfler and Gilmour, are the ones who know how to convey so very much emotion in their note choices and playing styles. Their instruments, and how they use them, are the extentions of the sum of shared human emotion. I agree with all that others have posted here. I can only add that, myself, coming from a culture in which "masculinity" is too often thought of as to be hard or cold, even to the point of stoicism, how refreshing it is to watch the reactions of our two young friends here, who hail from a culture in which not only is it okay for men to display natural emotion, but considered almost lacking in humanity when a man does not! What a joy it is watching all these reactions and the wealth of human emotion, be it joy or sorrow, that shine through in Patrick and George! Stay well, Bros, and good vibes from the Upper Left, USA!

I've been fortunate enough (and old enough) to hear this live. I was a young, quite careless kid then, I didn't understand it fully at the time, but it still impacted me deeply. If I think closely, Dire Straits were the first band that really impacted me, I've became their fan in 1980 when I've heard Sultans of Swing for the first time. Before that I just loved songs, this was first time I loved the band. I've seen them for five times live, plus Mark Knopfler for a few times, I think that makes me a fan. But don't worry, I'm not saying I'm a bigger fan than those who didn't have that oportunity. I'm just glad that younger generations ercognise greatness in music my generation grew up with. I appreciate people who appreciate this music. Love and peace to all!

The scene of this song is a soldier dying with his brothers in arms standing around him, being with him till the end comes. It also expresses the cruelty and pointlessness of war among human beings. I don't know where to start with recommendations. Maybe "Done With Bonapart" or "I Dug up Diamond" or maybe "If this good-bye," Which is about the the attacks of 9/11, sung from the point of view of a passenger on one of those doomed jets. Sultans of Swing was a fresh new sound. Someone who had something new to say and play on his guitar. THIS song 20 years later raised the bar for less-is-more. A simple message, a simple chord progression, simple lyrics, simple solos. Emotionally powerful in its delivery and arrangement, it is a masterpiece. Mark is one of the greatest guitar players, and like David Gilmour, doesn't fill in every space. He uses intervals and pauses for emphasis, and his solos are MELODIC. Knopfler though, leaves Gilmour behind with his lyrics. He is a gifted word-smith, like Bob Dylan. Thank you for a great reaction to a great song. May i suggest you broaden out into Knopfler's other masterpieces both in Dire Straits and solo. For example: "In the Gallery", "Once upon a Time in the West", "Tunnel of Love", "Romeo and Juliet", "Industrial Disease", "It Never Rains", "The Man's too Strong", "Iron Hand" . His solo catalogue also has some powerful musical story telling: "You Can't Beat the House", "Cleaning My Gun", So Far from the Clyde", "Done With Boneparte", "Are we in Trouble Now", "Boom Like That" (about McDonalds fast food), "Our Shangri-La", "Why Aye Man", "The Rag Pickers Dream", "True Love Will Never Fade", ""In the Sky", "Lights of Taormina", "River Towns", "Silver Eagle", "Baloney Again", "What it Is"...et al

About Romeo & Juliet, Mark was broken hearted when he wrote that song, that's why he puts his words & emotions in it. Pls listen carefully to the lyrics, everything he has to say is there. Mark is truly unique. A true genius. Thank you.

Una canción brutal de una banda fabulosa y, ojalá, que llegue un día en el que suene al pasado, por desgracia sigue siendo muy actual 🙏

I was lucky enough to see Dire Straits during this 1992 tour in Rotterdam, Feyenoord stadium, during sun set, with about 50000 others. There is nothing like Brothers in Arms in that setting. Nothing.

That is one guitar Mark said he sad to part from. This song reminds me of the scene in Saving Private Ryan when the Medic is shot & passed surrounded by his brothers in arms.
