I’m 52 years old, and I couldn’t disagree more. We have a lot of great music, of course, but we also had a lot of real crap that no one remembers or talks about. And that’s true of every era. The 60s have the Beatles and The Who, but they also had the Doodletown Pipers. The 70s had the Eagles and Led Zeppelin, but they also gave us the Osmonds. In the 80s we had Van Halen and Dire Straits, but we also had vanilla ice. Today there are some truly amazing bands like Tame Impala and Warpaint. The reality is that every decade produces a small amount of great music and a ton of crap that is quickly disposed of. But everyone believes that the music they were listening to between the ages of 15 and 24 is the best music of all time because it’s the soundtrack of their lives. It doesn’t matter if you were 15, 50, or 80: the music of your late teens will always be at the top of your playlist.

Funny story, the guy playing the drums played with Dave Edmonds/Rockpile/Nick Lowe. Literally his entire contribution to this entire album was only the drum intro. They hired a session guy to replace all his drum tracks on the songs other than the intro to money for nothing. Having to live that down would have been rough for me, to say the least

It actually makes sense. The original song was written to rub it in the faces of less successful people complaining about musicians getting to be rich. So it only makes sense that this song is played at a charity concert, to rub it in the faces of the people who complain about giving money to people who need it.

Money For Nothing stormed the airwaves on June 28, 1985 and Live Aid was a couple of weeks later on July 13th. A few of my college friends and I roadtripped it from south Georgia to Hollywood, Florida for that weekend. It was the peak of MTV and the 80s. Just a special time. To quote Hunter S. Thompson: _It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era-the kind of peak that never comes again. No explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world._

I thought U2, Dire Straits and Queen were the standouts at Wembley. U2 changed the tone of the day when they came on and played "Sunday Bloody Sunday", they were the first act that day to have real weight and presence on stage. Dire Straits had the best musicianship, and gave the tightest performance of the day. Queen, well they had Freddie, even though he wasn't at his best vocally, and the band played good, but nothing out of this world...it was all about his showmanship, and onstage charisma to involve the crowd. Ultravox, Sade and Nik Kershaw played very good sets also.

Live Aid was probably the best concert ever. The Who, Queen, Dire Straits, Tears For Fears, Bowie, Phil Collins, Mick Jagger, Neil Young, Sting, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Judas Priest, Hall and Oates, just some of the acts. I'd be keeping my ticket stub from that concert anyway.

My parents went off to Portugal for the summer holiday and I was meant to go too as I was 17 but I refused and stayed at home simply because I wanted to be at Live Aid. It was one of the best decisions of my life. What a concert! Never be one like it, the talent on stage in that one day was off this planet.

In terms of best performance at Live Aid, this might be second best behind Queen. There's no topping them. Sting out there doing his "I want my MTV" line along with Dire Straits sounding their best up to this point, and doing well on the charts at the same time. The stars aligned for this whole event, and everybody went home happoy.

I'm just amazed at Sting's voice quality. Forget live autotune, personal computers might not have made yet. 0:45 Comes on stage, casually stands there, turns around and somehow delivers the most perfect notes. Fufufufu

I'd be honored if some Dire Straits & Sting fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal KZfaq performances of ON EVERY STREET and ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9hzfbiblZmzo2w.html in tribute to 2 genius songwriters from the city of Newcastle. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace and stay safe in the '020s.

If you like Sting doing that, you ought to see him (it's on KZfaq) sing message in a bottle all by himself on stage at the Secret Policemen's Concert (for Amnesty International).

Ive seen him live twice. In 1986 and 2011. And if he ever goes on the road I will see him again in a heartbeat. True story my friend saw him jamming at the local pub here in Melbourne in 86 on his day off. He had a couple of guys from the band with him. I wanted to punch my friend in the throat.
