Direct Fuel injection puts fuel right into the cylinder Port does it behind the intake valves. Both direct injection and port injection have pros and cons. The combined way is the best, it has the advantages of direct injection and the cleaning action of port injection.

Tip if you have a direct only engine - Get an oil catch can to save your intake valves. Over time the valves will get junk on top from PCV blow by. Since there is no fuel being blasted on them (this cleans them as well) they will get build up over time and can cause the valves to not seal properly.

Port injection > Direct injection in terms on maintenance and daily driver imo. I never ran direct injection on high performance applications only port injection so I can't say if they shine in that aspect or not.
