Albert Hughes of the legendary Hughes brothers recently sat down with VladTV and talked about how the title "Menace II Society" was adopted from a student film that Hughes had created at LA City College. Hughes clarified that it was his brother's idea to incorporate the title in their movie, and he cleared up misconceptions about its origin, adding that it was actually inspired by M.C. Ren and CPO's "Ballad of a Menace," as well as Ice Cube's rap song "I Ain't the One."
Hughes also related his early days growing up in Detroit with his brother, African-American father, and Armenian mother. After his parents divorced when the boys were two, his mother moved them to California in 1980. Throughout the rest of the interview, Albert details his film career and responds to topics addressed in his twin brother's previous interview with VladTV. To hear more, check out the rest of the interview above.

When I hear DJ Vlad adamantly saying that he thinks Menace is a way better film than BITH I think of that Ice Cube verse “the white man is something I tried to study.. but I got my hands bloody”. Vlad can’t relate to the nuanced humanization of the black family experience and dynamics of the culture in black communities. Boyz was too emotionally sophisticated for the average white person to comprehend. Menace was a west coast hardcore gangster film which lacked the emotional compassion and complexity of the black experience. Truthfully, I love both movies and owned both films years ago on DVD. Bottom line is that Vlad exposes himself as just another white guy who gets emotionally attached to the hyper dysfunction of the black hip hop experience in America and profits off of it.

I would have to agree. Dead Presidents has a better cast (in my opinion) and it has a solid storyline. That courtroom scene still gives me goosebumps. Anthony exploding after getting sentenced, the reactions, the music build up, everything. Excellent film!

I watched the Continental series and it was amazing. However, I think Albert is off with his timeline because it looks more like New York City in the early to mid seventies and not the late seventies to early eighties. Disco music’s heyday was from between 1974- 1980.
