The insider is One of the unsung movie masterpieces of the 90s

Michael Mann sold himself, his decisions, and 'The Insider." Charlie Rose was difficult, and his opinions about 'loyalty' to CBS were absolutely unnecessary. This is why Rose being convinced by Mann was significant. The film IS a psychological thriller and a suspense thriller about the complex layers of corporate aggression and the struggle of fighting a foe on the scale of Goliath. The toll the battle took on Bergman, Wigand was pyrrhic. This movie is a total classic.

A criminally underrated classic that really captures modern journalism

My word, Charlie Rose wasn't very good at his job, was he? The Insider is a brilliant film.

For Michael Mann not to have an Academy Award for directing is a crime, second only to Alfred Hitchcock not winning one.

It is difficult to find the words that, I feel, describe Michael Mann's demeanor while discussing his magnificent film "The Insider". I will try : Focused, Clear, Courageous, Strong. The film greatly impressed me and his inner strength to create this film impresses me. Timeless and masterful.

13:43 - I haven't seen a replay of a Charlie Rose segment in years. I don't remember his being such a prick as he is here--- like a dagger poking at Mann, as though he wasn't willing to see his Picture through the marketing stage- going so far as to taunt "I bet Steven Spielberg sees it through" - I didn't find this being a daring tough questioner. I found it more like trying to wound the guy for the box office not matching the outstanding quality of the film, in every dept. And we got the hint right at the start that Charlie's got a chip on his shoulder re how his then workplace -- 60 Minutes II -- is portrayed in the film -- going so far as to announce right at the start he's got LOYALTY to his place of work. When this is absolutely the crux of the entire film, that sublimating oneself from truth choosing loyalty instead as the more significaant metric, is the cowardly thing to do, betraying the sanctity of what CBS News and jourmalism since Edward R. Murrow has been all about. Charlie missed the entire point of the film in that way- and I suppose by extension one could say that post ME-TOO era in media business, Charlie probably expected that LOYALTY would win the day, and his club of media titans would back him over the women accusing him of harrassment. Just mid-year 2019 or so, Charlie was preparing to re-enter the media world to make a comeback - which was so tonedeaf - and it really leads one back to this central question here: Is the guy so arrogant and sure of himself that he can get away with, in this case right here, cheap shots or badgering Mann -- because he's pissed that the film in part chronicled the biggest scar in the history of that longest running investigative news show in history? Mann, if anything, is being candid and respectful of the fact that marketing is its own dark art, and he was admitting his own lack of expertise in packaging his complex film into a 30-sec spot that captured the feeling the film produced.

The film didn't do the box office it was expected to do--the theme is too strong, and people shy away from anything like that unless it's more simply done. This story is complex and spoke truth to power. Masterpiece.

Mann is The Man!! Friedkin, Mann...true geniuses so underrated...

Truly a fantastic film with incredible dialogue and an intriguing story. "Tortious interference"......"you've got your Rights and you've got your lefts..."

A brilliant film. A true thriller, you become absorbed by the story and you believe in the characters which separates the quality of this film with others. Top marks, I wish more films had this quality.

Charlie, what were you trying to accomplish here? The Insider is an exceptional film.

Today, I spoke to my ten year old students about Jeff Wigand and this film. Told them about real life heroes.

This interviews get off to such an insane start when Rose professes his “loyalty” to 60 Minutes and Mike Wallace. Kudos to laying your cards on the table, but why play this hand unless your aim is to intimidate? And true to form, Rose spends the rest of the interview badgering Mann.

Michael Mann is FANTASTIC. So was "The Insider". It's one of the most brilliant films the 90's ever had the luxury to enjoy. The performances from EVERY actor (and I mean ALL of them) were outstanding.

This is a(nother) classic masterpiece from Michael Mann, all the stars were aligned for The Insider, everything is great and in it's right place, the acting, the score, the script, the photography - and i'm still pissed off to this day that the movie was robbed by the Academy in 1999, in favour of the highly overrated American Beauty.

I love the film. I've always thought it was a modern film noir, so it's affirming to me to hear Mann call it "complex" and "a psychological thriller"! 12:30

Mann comported himself very well here. Can't say the same for Rose

Was going to write a genuine think piece about the insidious manner in which charlie rose attempted to belittle Mann & assign him an unwarranted failure for the movie's lack of box office success, but after reading the comments I see that everybody gets it. His bias was criminally blatant & unbecoming of one of his journalistic stature

An incredibly underrated movie. One of the best movies of all time (in my top 10), and I am a movie buff!

The film is awesome. Crowe and Pacino were great. I really loved Plummer as Wallace and dialogue given to him. I'm sure Wallace himself took issue - but Plummer was really great. I think he is actually like 6 inches taller than Wallace, maybe?

That is a hell of a credit list as a Director.

The most unpretentious director vs. the most pretentious interviewer.

This is Mann's best film imo - in some ways even better than Heat. But it did not do great at the box office, and this is back in 1999/2000 when adults actually WENT to movie theaters. Nowadays this type of film is simply not being made - or if it is, it is going straight to streaming and with inferior directors/writers/actors and a low budget.

Charlie Rose openly admitting he’s more concerned with loyalty to the CBS corporation than journalistic integrity is both disgusting and unsurprising. He got fired 20 years too late.

If it wasn't for The Insider, which opened doors for Mr Crowe followed by the amazing Gladiator....he'd still be making movies on Alaska from AUS or NZ...Lol

At 16 I knew this was something special but wasn't sure why. Tons of just dialog and you cant wait to see what's next. Since then I've smoked about 60 lbs of tobacco. Idk

Charlie Rose looks irritated

Rose seems way out of his element here. Was he always this bad? He seems lowkey flustered - maybe he realized he had nothing of value to contribute to this conversation. Mann kept it classy.

It's interesting the struggle to simply define what the movie is about. I think the reason for that is the word "whistleblower" was not a well known concept 20 years ago. Not like it is today.

Not to knock Charlie Rose too much, but a around the 14:00 mark he's asking about marketing and whether Mann put enough effort into advertising the film, if he could have done more to help its poor box office performance. My understanding is that directors don't have a lot to do with the marketing campaign as such, that's up to the marketing departments of the studios/distributor. So Rose's question in that regard is pretty wildly off base, basically ignorant of the subject. Mann's tactful answers, of course, don't help here: he doesn't want to throw the marketing dept. under the bus completely, so he includes himself in the marketing failure, but that makes Rose think the director is also in charge of that aspect of things, lol

The type of film that is the Insider does not attract the type of target audience that likes to go to a sticky crowded cinema.

That was an awful setup by Charlie Rose. I always thought don't say you have a bone to pick just go ahead and pick the bone.

Directors are not the best people to talk to about films. The best people are obviously the writers, followed by the actors.

Rose should have asked Mann why did he ask Mike Wallace to play himself when Wallace comes off as a weasel in the movie.
