Lyrics:
getting crazy on the waltzers but it’s the life that i choose
sing about the sixblade sing about the switchback and a torture tattoo
and i been riding on a ghost train where the cars they scream and slam
and i don’t know where i’ll be tonight but i’d always tell you where i am
in a screaming ring of faces i seen her standing in the light
she had a ticket for the races just like me she was a victim of the night
i put a hand upon the lever said let it rock and let it roll
i had the one arm bandit fever there was an arrow through my heart and my soul
and the big wheel keep on turning neon burning up above
and i’m just high on the world
come on and take a low ride with me girl
on the tunnel of love
it’s just the danger when you’re riding at your own risk
she said you are the perfect stranger she said baby let’s keep it like this
it’s just a cakewalk twisting baby step right up and say
hey mister give me two give me two cos any two can play
and the big wheel keep on turning neon burning up above
and i’m just high on the world
come on and take a low ride with me girl
on the tunnel of love
well it’s been money for muscle another whirligig
money for muscle and another girl i dig
another hustle just to make it big
and rockaway rockaway
and girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
like the spanish city to me when we were kids
oh girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
like the spanish city to me when we were kids
she took off a silver locket she said remember me by this
she put her hand in my pocket i got a keepsake and a kiss
and in the roar of dust and diesel i stood and watched her walk away
i could have caught up with her easy enough but something must have made me stay
and the big wheel keep on turning neon burning up above
and i’m just high on the world
come on and take a low ride with me girl
on the tunnel of love
and now i’m searching through these carousels and the carnival arcades
searching everywhere from steeplechase to palisades
in any shooting gallery where promises are made
to rockaway rockaway from cullercoats and whitley bay out to rockaway
and girl it looks so pretty to me like it always did
like the spanish city to me when we were kids
girl it looks so pretty to me like it always did
like the spanish city to me when we were kids

I just listened to the track and came here to say for me it is one of the absolute best guitar solos of all time, in any genre. One of my favorites. What I also love is that it finishes with the piano, it seems so unselfish from Mark. It's just brilliant.

When I was 22 I was working with street children in Ethiopia. One day a social worker and I were driving down south near the Kenyan border to visit another project there. In the car was just this one tape from Dire Straits with this song on it. The bumpy ride would take us 12 hours and we listened to this song probably a hundred times, watching the most gorgeous landscapes and sunsets I’ve ever seen. Most beautiful time of my life in the most beautiful country with the most beautiful music. I miss Africa so much...

Good man and I envy your experience from every angle! If I were in your shoes I would have chosen the same song. IMO the most underrated guitar solo ever if it is not spoken of with equal respect as David Gilmour's masterpiece "Comfortably Numb".

Ironically, I'm in West Africa, listening to a song about the Spanish City fairground, in my hometown "when we were kids"... it's mostly gone now, the main building is still there, and it still kinda looks so pretty to me, like it always did... I miss Cullercoats to Whitley Bay.

The outro is the most beautiful, deeply emotional guitar work Mark has done in his celebrated career. Yes, it surpasses Sultans of Swing. It deserves to go down in history as one of the great, all-time guitar solos. I’m guessing Tunnel of Love just didn’t get the radio play of Stairway and some of the other iconic songs. Mark channels feeling through his instrument; the outro is even more powerful and heart rending than his very powerful lyrics.

As i sit here typing this, it is April 2020. I am 45 years old. I 1st heard of Dire Straits when i was 10 years old back in 1985 by my father. Very quickly, I was so obsessed with them. If you named a song i could tell you how long it went for, what album, what track number, & how many (if any) different versions (such as live) their were. Why? Emotional content. Because Mark Knopfler played/plays with emotional content, because i listened to it with emotional content. It is 2020, & nothing - and i mean NOTHING - grabs my heart as much as Mark Knopfler does!! Laugh at all me all you want, i don't care. But, like when i was 10 years old, at 45 i STILL wanna grow up to play like Mark Knopfler does. Nothing has moved me as much as his music. Nothing! I wish i was good enough to play guitar like Jimi Hendrix, Slash, Joe Satriani, .... but all i wanna do is just play like Mark Knopfler does. Naturally. Not forced. I STILL love it, & it STILL moves me, just like it did 35 years ago when i was 10 years old. Thanks for 43 or so years of great, invaluable music!

I definitely agree, but does anyone happen to know why he left Dire Straits in the early 80s? I would argue some of their best work (So Far Away, Money For Nothing, Walk Of Life, etc) was still ahead of them.

@@AchtungBaby77 It's all a bit murky. There are interviews with Pick on KZfaq where he skates around the issue, (maybe for legal reasons?) as does J Illsley in his book on life in the band. He and M Knopfler met up with him. He anounced he was leaving, and that was that. Illsley doesn't really expand much further. Perhaps it was a combination of much touring, personality clashes and musical direction that made Pick leave? There's a rather vague but well documented "alleged" quote from Pick saying he left because he was "in danger of becoming a rock drummer". Just my opinion here, but I can't imagine Pick on the Brothers In Arms album. A different animal to what went before it. But I can imagine him on the last album. Whatever....a truly great drummer.
@dondrapersayswhat
@dondrapersayswhat Жыл бұрын
@@AchtungBaby77 From what I understand is Pick viewed himself as a jazz guy and thought the band's poppish direction wasn't for him. It was a creative fulfillment thing. Probably it was a lot more complicated than that but that's just the gist as I've heard it.

I’ve been sat here for a while now in the car, trying to piece together what this song means. For other songs by Dire Straits, it’s easy to analyse and decipher, with Romeo and Juliet, Brothers In Arms, Sultans Of Swing, So Far Away etc… But I don’t think I can ever fully understand what this song is trying to say. I figure I’ll always be guessing, but hey! Away we go

What has been lost is "time" my friend...Something none of us will ever get back.So we always come back here for memories ,coz even though we've lost time, friends and family etc. The music will always carry us back. Reminiscing whilst floating across notes, harmonies, vocals, drums and guitars. Knowing we will always be safe and feel loved if we just hold on to this brilliant ,classic , (which will always remain timeless) so it can continue to carry us all the way across the universe and the heavens where we almost kiss the time and the people that we once lost. This song reminds me of someone I met a few years ago. I met her at a nightclub where a live band was playing. We had a blast, dancing to almost every song. At the end, we hugged and parted ways, because we lived in very different worlds that we had to go back to. I found myself wishing I could recapture that moment in time, just like the guy in the song. It makes me think of her and brings back bittersweet memories.

The guitar solo at the end is one of those rare times when an electric guitar sounds as mellifluous as acoustic guitar & is not used just for fast play. And yes, its a superb solo, long enough to have its own identity and to be savoured nicely.

I saw Dire Straits play live during the Brothers In Arms tour at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, Colorado. No one opened for them, they played for five to six hours, only took two breaks, played their hit songs, only played a small fraction of their music and sounded phenomenal. That was one of the greatest concerts I've ever been to and I've been to many concerts, most of them great.

@@Alexios_CV Let's hope these new giants of rock reveal themselves soon and begin to show us the span of these great shoulders. The art of the writing monumental rock songs is slowly but surely becoming a thing we seem to accept as a thing of the past now and that's not a good thing at all. Surely we can continue to grow and evolve the great sphere of Rock Music into something to be as proud of as ever it were, unfortunately it would seem this is fast becoming further from achievement than it has in many a year now
