This is the 1968 Jeep M715 we built on episode 108 of Dirt Every Day. Its a really cool truck but has some wheel issues. What is the best fix? On this episode Fred swaps a tire and discusses the dilemma.

your comment while jacking the rig, not a lot of flex to worry about while lifting. I use a ratchet strap and sling the axle to the frame before lifting on the frame, this is also handy when stuck so you are not having to lift 18" of droop before the wheel lifts. sheers and love watching all your various content.

My 1964 Dodge W300 military truck had those axles and wheels. I swapped them for GM 1 tons. I also swapped in a 4bt Cummins GM Nv4500 and NP202 Tcase.

I put re-centered Humvee wheels on mine. Work great and I get to keep the cool old axles. And used govt tires are relatively cheap.

International used the same wheels pattern until 1968, they were split rims however. Stockton wheels does make custom modern 6x7.25 wheels as well.

It took me 6 months to get a set of wheels out of Stockton Wheels. I couldn't tell you how many times I called how many times I was lied to. I was young I was in my early twenties they kept telling me they couldn't get material blah blah blah. I got a different excuse from a different person. Finally I wised up I started documenting each call each lie that was given to me the name of the person the date. As soon as I told them I was about to file fraud charges against them my wheels showed up within 2 weeks. That's what happens when you're required to pay people up front for a set of wheels before they even start building them. I'm not going to say they weren't nice when they showed up to my house all powder coated and shiny but that was a lot of headache just to get a set of solid steel offset wheels for a old Toyota

It's really important to semi inflate the tube and then place the tire flap in. Other wise you will pinch the tube almost every time

I had a bicycle with a hidden burr inside the wheel.. popped tubes on the regular. I spent too much money trying band aids of thicker liner, heavier duty tube. I finally spent a good 45 minutes blueprinting faults on the inside of the rim.. marked them w sharpie. I put a ultra thin layer of JB Weld over the burrs. No more problems.

I had issues with tube recently also on my 715. Bought 10 to get 5 that would hold. First ones put on professionally, all went flat within 2 weeks. I charged out the set and have been fine since then. No idea why, got a different brand the second time and everything is good. Marsh racing will also make rims to fit I believe.

Others have mentioned cutting out the centers and welding them into another rim - I know an old machinist that used to do this with charger rims. I'm certain there's a DED host that could do this. I would definitely do the axle swap myself though if I were going to use the truck frequently, or take it on the highway.

I have one of these trucks and wheel and tire options are ROUGH Trailworthy Fab, and Stockton wheel make custom wheels for em. I don’t have the ability or money to do an axle swap but you definitely should do an episode on an axle swap for it!

My tires are not stock, stock height, but 12 inches wide, new tube and liners stock rims...nock on wood, never had an issue to date. It has been almost 5 years now. I did do it myself, no shop near me wanted to touch split rims, even the "safety" kind like these. It was a real pain to squeeze it all together.

I had the same issue with my 1982 Toyota hilux that also had split rims and that were super heavy…. I just reuse the old center plate and put a newer one peace outer rime on it and saved 8 kg or wheel … 36 kg in all

I think the problem is 2 fold 1 being a janky design, but 2 them wheels are meant to run 90-110 psi or there abouts, so for offroad use I imagine you air down quite a bit, allowing everything to move and rub. So, best option is probably have custom alcoa's made, or swap axles to a more common 8 lug or the ubiquitous larger 6 lug pattern

what if you gave the wheels one more try, coat the inside of them where the tube rides with the rubber "flex seal" stuff? it would smooth out the sharp corners and seal the rim

That is a cool truck. If you stick with the axle maybe some 24 series power wagon wheels from Stockton wheel? They should be able to put any center on it for relatively cheap. Or it wouldn’t be too hard to make a set like them out of some junk steel wheels.
@stephendee7839

Or get some chevy 16" aluminum truck rims and have a shop modify them to work with your hubs. Should be pretty cheap compared with custom rims or specialty rims.

Looks like a D60 with a tracta-joint. Look around for IH truck rims from late fifties/early sixties - same axle, but can't remember if they use a weird, gigantic 5 lug or 6 lug pattern. Housings will take some tremendous abuse - the tracta-joints won't.

Cut the centres of those wheels and find the right diameter tubeless wheels,Dayton tubeless rims in a 16 inch diameter or greater diameter will be any easy mod than changing out the front and rear axle assemblies, unless the parts for said axles( breakshoes, drums, bearings etc) are not easily available, have a great day from australia
