Mike on our field tiles on the outlets we always put 2 big galvanized gutter spikes through the pipe to keep the critters out . Leaving and open 6' or 8" tile only invites Opossums to crawl up in to the pipe looking for a meal, and they can't turn around and die in the pipe even young Racoons will crawl up in to the pipes. The Gutter spikes are cheaper than a road guard and work just as well.
@kevink49143 ай бұрын
😂 rodent guards cost less than $20 bucks 🤷🏻♂️ so how much are you saving with galvanized gutter spikes 🤔😉😂

@@kevink4914 I just paid about $1.62 each for 12” galvanized gutter spikes with the plastic ferrule (that I cut to the diameter of the tile to help keep the end from crushing) - so even using 2, I’d save about a 12 pack 🍻😆
@TheLoiteringKid3 ай бұрын
Hey now, you gotta keep fuel in the machine installing those spikes, and I didn't even think of those "plastic ferrule"s that would be with the gutter spikes, its being thrifty at its finest when you use everything from your simple solution, and have beer money.
@raymondheckard2343 ай бұрын
@@TheLoiteringKid farmer are very thrifty. Baling wire get used for many things and Gutter spikes in 1979 was 15 cents a piece, so they got used for many things. Now you've got a new reference point for directions. " Go on up this road until you pass opossum pipe, then it'll be another 1/4 mile or so 'till you make a left at Broken plow trail and that'll take you right to oil pan rock, stop there, get out and walk another 100 yards over the hill and you'll see Aaron stuck in Bubba Dump, right where I told him to go". I just started watching your channel. Most of my life, I was a dirt thrower. Around 40 years. My dad owned 500 head of cows and goats dairy farm. Bottled our own milk. Dad also owned a 50-up to the 70-man plumbing outfit. So i grew up throwing dirt and manure. My life up to 16 I lived on a dairy farm. The rest of my life, a dirt thrower. I dug with a 580c case. 3 stick. I prided myself in being the best in KC. Kicker of it all, I did it with one arm. All that being said, you are an excellent operator. I retired at 53, but if you're ever in Kansas City, ask the people building commercial sites if they remember the one arm backhoe operator. Ask the old guys. Love your channel.

So once again this brings back memories 50+ years ago for me. In my tiling days I ran into this situation. My first guess was a muskrat. That was what it was I my experience. My second guess would have been a large barn rat. Either could be large enough to block the pipe. Even if they weren't quite big enough to completely block the pipe while alive, they will bloat and seal the pipe as they enlarge. Above ground either of these animals would decay quickly from maggots but in an isolated place like that, decay would occur much slower. It is similar to how much slower wood rots in water verses exposure to an environment which is much more oxygen-rich. Just so you can feel bad about this event … if the situation had developed differently, with the possum getting a chance to decompose (before the water backup interfered with the rate of decomposion) it may have never been a problem at all. Once the flesh and fur fell off, the path would be only slightly blocked. 😊
