It’s not just Flint, Michigan. Bad water is more widespread than you think. Aging infrastructure is leaving thousands of rural communities vulnerable to contamination with no fix in sight. CNN travels to two of them.
Virginia Tech engineering Professor Marc Edwards watched as water flowed from a garden hose in Enterprise, Louisiana. As he moved a jar to catch a sample, the color changed from clear to brown.
"When mine comes out, it comes out black," Enterprise resident John Tiser said as he watched Edwards work.
Tiser, Enterprise's newly appointed water board president, was giving Edwards a tour around this rural community in central Louisiana, where residents have struggled with water problems. He says his wife drives 20 miles each direction to do laundry in a town with clear water.
Concerned about the potential health effects for his family, including his two daughters, he ran for a seat on the local water board.
What drives him, Tiser said, is "being sure that they're not consuming anything that 20 years from now is going to wind up hurting them."
Years of water system neglect means that the 250-or-so residents there are left with pipes that leak more than 70% of their water into the ground, Tiser said -- all because they can't afford to fix them.
"We're basically putting Band-Aids when we need to go to the ER. That's where we're at," he said.

The more they turn a blind eye the more it will cost in the future. Stop giving big corporations billions in tax incentives/subsidies. There's communities that need it more.

As someone from the Netherlands, this just sounds like gross dereliction of duty of the politicians who are supposedly controlling the budgeting of the water supply. Water is a basic human need, this quality is just unacceptable. Fearing the quality of my tap water is almost anathema to myself as I can always rely on my tapwater to be perfectly drinkable. My country is absolutely irrelevant on a global scale. It is for that reason that it astounds me that the US, for all its power and might, seems to be incapable of giving its own citizens this basic human requirement.

These are disgraceful, appalling situations that should never happen. But it's not typical in the US for people to not have access to clean water. Most people do. The reason this report is important is not because most Americans live this way, it's because no American should have to live this way.

Why can’t we as a people work all together in those communities pick up a shovel, dig up all the water pipes from the water treatment facility too all the homes affected with this problem. Then install new pipes. It might take a long time but when it’s all done it would be worth it. How do you think City infrastructures where built in the Middle Ages, with a shovel and many humans working together. There was no electricity or large energy powered mechanical trucks back then. We can do anything as a people if we where to put are minds & body’s together and get things done instead of keep blaming someone else. Especially at the “Breaking Point” when it effects us humans too live.

Democratic and republican the leaders and the coorperates must come to gether, the corperates have bilions and trillians of dollars, it is a peanut to achieve a clean water infrastructures, it does cost lot of dollars of course but it is possible, also when the water is clean that should be the new standard, and well laws should protect the infrastructure and enviorment from companies like exxson and BASF that do want to flush chemicals in a cheap way into the water system. Flusing is only allowed if they process it correctly. It is called a water system. America does not have any norms and values, or laws to protect the standard. Even the democrats are hor hor and horripic, you may live 100 years maybe like this and then you have no workers that are healty enough to work for the very very ritch Amazons. I hear the workers have 2 or 3 jobs in a full week to be able to pay all bills. In other words, go to Canada and let the Mexican work for the ritch families. The kapitalism has gained so much of billions and trillians of dollars, the system will not change, a multi party system would help and cleanup of the current senators, there is too much influence and hired people working as respresentative of the folks and too many hired ritch sentors working in the goverment, or say it clear to the people goverment is only for law and forcement jobs, and not for infrastructure or clean water or affortable living. goverment is for jobs at the military which are send by the coorperates.

This is so sad. In a country with So many trillions of government tax money... basic rights are not even given... no clean Water no health care and every town is left to it's own without any government help or fines when they don't meat the standards... I'm from the Netherlands where the water quality is amazing imho, (it dienst beat the well watering the hills of Austria where my grandfather's aunt moved to ) But it's stable, state great, and pure and stable enough I can fill my fish tanks and water my orchids with water with. next to no chlorine residue with a ph of 7.5 and compared to the rrilionndoler needed to replace all pipes pay a A small tax for that.. 18 euro per month to be precise. Everybody payes per units of people living in the house contaminating the waste water × the water used per year. To pay for cleaning the waste water that Goes into the sewidge systems wich gets filtered then goes trough basins of biofilters with bacteria cleaning the water it then gets sanitized fuether to regulated norms before getting pumped into rivers lakes and canals until it's naturally filtered back down into the groundwater. Wich then gets pumped up As close as possible to the distribution centre of that area and filtered and sanitized to drinking water standards. wich is done by a diff company. But both work under strict government oversight. It's a but more complex but it's late and I just wanted to say... Darn that's so sad that a country with So much technology progress and money the well bieng of it's citizens isn't priority nr 1. Without healty people with good educations how is America going to flourish to higher living standards, better economic growth. Make America great starts with safe healty happy educated people. And from what I am seeing in the news half of the population isn't safe mass shootings in schools and other places, cop killing black citizens , kkk white suroemacy, milions of rape and assault victems, many don't have safe drinking water like a third world country wages that keep people in poverty with 40 to 60.your work weeks..no healthcare how are people to flourish to be better to aim high when basic rights aren't even given. I don't get why not everybody is outraged and votes for reform...

That almost never works. Especially in rural areas where people dumped used motor oil for 50 years.

@@shawntucker7674 I'm not buying that one. Just about every auto parts store in the country has a 55 gallon drum in the back and accepts used motor oil to recycle. And it works for me here in South Carolina. The only problem I see with these people drilling their own wells is how contaminated the ground water is from the rotted infrastructure that's in place now. Bringing it in from an area farther away could cost big bucks. Low interest loans, tax credits and a go fund me page could probably get it done if the Govt. cronies really cared about these people.

@@hemihead6645 so I grew up in Verdigris, Oklahoma. Not a lot of farming but a bit rural. My entire life growing up there, people dumped everything. Why? Because it was easy to dump on your own property than drive 10-15 minutes to do it the right way. We redug the well on our land and couldn't use the water because it was so contaminated. Even the rural water district has problems to this day. The creek behind my old house doesn't even have fish anymore, no need to wonder why.

That would be even worse. Bet the town council would love that, though. They could blame his family's cancers on his well.

Michael Moore is not impressed with President Barack Obama's visit to Flint today. Moore, the 62-year-old Flint native and documentary filmmaker, joined CNN earlier this afternoon to discuss Obama's pledge to Flint -- saying "I've got your back" while drinking a glass of filtered Flint water -- and why he's upset with that message. "He is just trying to reassure people that everything's okay," Moore said. "To drink from a glass of Flint water when a number of experts are still saying this water's not safe? It's still going through the same corroded lead pipes? It was such a disappointing thing to see. Obama visited with Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, held briefings with officials and met with Flint children. During the visit, he drank from a glass of what he said was filtered Flint water at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, vouching for the safety of certified filters and letting Flint residents know the water is "drinkable" with a filter (though he cautioned pregnant women and children under 6 to continue drinking bottled water "out of an abundance of caution").
