In todays episode we get stuck into gutting out the old Gardeners Cottage ready for renovation, We get a visit from our wedding caterer friends who come to shoot a promo video for their new business venture. And a crumbling chimney breast could spell disaster for the Gardeners Cottage renovation project. All in a days work for Chateau de la Basmaignee

My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle.
We film and edit everything ourselves.
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

Please, for your own and the building‘s safety, consult a structural engineer before you do any further work on any of the load-bearing walls. From what I can tell from seeing them, especially the one that has the bricked up window in it, they are not too stable at this point. The mortar seems quite brittle which can cause huge parts of a wall falling down at once. Stay safe and keep up the amazing work! Much love from a historical building researcher from Germany ❤️

Helloooooo Michael! I’m absolutely loving your videos. I watch Stephanie’s videos as well, religiously. I’m 64 and I live in Northern Indiana, very close to the Illinois border by Chicago. I’m a retired Steelworker for almost 30 years. Yes, women are steelworkers too. I’ve worked with a LOT of bricks in my time, tearing down and building up the insides of furnaces. Michael, with that type of work you definitely need to be wearing a respirator/mask that will trap dust particles. You have NO idea what you’re breathing in. You may not experience any respiratory problems until years later. You also need to wear a hard hat. One brick hitting you in the right spot could do some devastating damage or possibly kill you. I’ve seen some crazy stuff in my time. Work gloves and steel toed shoes would be a good thing to wear as well. Your sneakers aren’t going to protect you if something falls on your foot. They always taught us, Safety first. I don’t want to sound to preachy but it’s better to be safe than sorry as they say. I can’t wait to see it when it’s finished. I know it’s going to be AMAZING. I also wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed last weeks video. I was drooling over your Nana’s Spode and her beautiful home as well. I’m looking high and low for a tea caddy now. Your paintings were very awesome as well. Every Friday I look forward to your videos. See you next week and BE CAREFULL!

OK Michael everybody wants you to wear some steel toed foot ware, maybe some construction helmets, safety glasses a must,, and I guess masks because of all the crud in the air. U wouldn’t want to hurt your friend Ryan either. I’ve done lots of jobs just like you guys. So far so good. I’m confident you’ll have somebody look at the chimney with some engineering background and make a decision. You’ve done wonderfully so far and though there may be more surprises than expected I think the building could be saved quite easily. It only takes grunt labor, some reinforcing, you’ll get there don’t get discouraged.

I'd definitely splurge a bit and get the entire building checked out by an engineer, before you start repairing anything. You might miss something and once the whole building is finished, the problem might ruin it all. Or you might start to spend money on, I don't know, fixing the walls for example and then an enitre wall might fall off. It's just not worth your time and money. It looks like the whole building is standing because of sheer will and it might not be safe. Also, please be careful ♥ I trust your judgement though :)

Michael, as much as I love the videos, I am very concerned about the ad hoc way you just pull buildings to pieces, by hand, with no PPE or structural integrity. I just hope the cottage doesn't collapse on you! I get wanting to do a lot by yourself (it is your channel name, after all), but maybe it would be good if an engineer took a look at the building first, before you start to tear things down? 😅 Could save you a lot of headache later. Also, the whole time I was thinking why nobody wore any kind of protective gear (hands, feet, eyes...) That being said I think it's a really amazing project and I can't wait to see how it turns out! 😄

I was concerned about removing bits of the ceiling too - wouldn't it weaken the walls by taking all the plaster off? Very unwise to strip so much out - and not be prepared for a collapse - and also not be there for 2 weeks. Might the chimney not gradually weaken in a moderate wind? Perhaps a re-build coming

OMG I love and all that but you're messing with things that are above your grade. The whole front of the house can collapse. The chimney is clearly putting pressure on the structure. Please consult an engineer. The plaster that you are tearing down like no tomorrow believe it or not is keeping things together. Not to mention the historic value that poor old plaster and lath has. The very least you can do is wear protective gear. There is a reason we go to school to learn these things.

@marioula05 4 жыл бұрын
@@patriciacalunniato6872 Actually the work that they have done although impressive is mostly cosmetic. If you think about it there is a reason why most DIYers don't mess around with stone buildings. The stability of the buildings was never in question in their work thus far. I don't doubt their intentions at all. I like them as much as anyone in here. However, the cracks on the wall and the general state of the cottage could very much require a certified company and no amount of googling and good intentions can ever and will ever replace that. Of course I believe that he doesn't know what he is doing because he can't know. The satisfying transformations that appeal to most viewers are secondary when addressing structural problems. If a historic building falls there will be no window to paint, no fireplace to recreate, no tile to ... tile. It is equally important to have people to buy these buildings and give them life as it is to utilise professional help.

@@elainejohnson796 It's not practical to salvage and fix very rotten building materials. The place is water and fire damaged - that's the reality. It's dreamy to think of a "restored" cottage, but being dreamy about this building in terms of restoring everything that's there is very naive. My sense is that he'll sensitively renovate it and save what he can. That's the best he can do.
@salrial744

That plaster and lathe can't be saved and it wasn't keeping anything together. It just doesn't make sense. It had huge cracks in it, fell off the wall and ceilings and crumbled in his hands. Same with parts of the mantel. Severe water and fire damage. You don't have to go to school to see that. I did go to school for it - some things are beyond fixing, no matter how much you weigh the alternatives. I did worry for him without protective gear, and he should have vacated as soon as he realized the chimney could come down.

This whole episode should've come with a "you'll need a valium" warning lol. My heart was in the throat the entire time. Sorry mate, but as beautiful as that cottage is, its NOT structurally sound and there's no way in hell i'd be in there working on it. The cracks were the first sign, the rot the 2nd and then now everything with the chimney on top- nooope! You NEED a structural engineer in there to asess the overall projects costings to repair and if it is even salvagable. And support that chimney with a solid scaffolding/jacks ASAP! Good luck to you, may your hard work money and determination be enough to get it back up to standard. I really do hope she works with you soon, poor ol' girl was likely built for (and by) the servants and therefore had very little money or thought put into the build

Taking the plaster off with a shovel... I have to admit, I'm a bit jealous :) I've bought myself a 1920s house and it is taking me forever to get the ugly old popcorn plaster off the walls, even with a hammer drill. Great job though!

Laughed so hard when Michael poked at a mantelpiece part, nothing crushed down so he said: that's holding haha. Joke aside: let an engineer evaluate that building first, then wear masks and gear to protect yourself.

I love demolition day! I hope your able to add a new chimney , in keeping with the Beatrix Potter, 1920’s style cottage. I love this part of renovations, its the beginning of your new life. Cheers 🥂🍾 edit: my cousin started the first farm to food truck in the US. It took off like fire. Everything is fresh and seasonal and you knew where it came from. It was started in South Carolina US. Congrats on your friends new food endeavors! 🎉🥂🍾🍔🍗🍖🎉

It looks like you might need to bring in a structural engineer. I know...big bucks but much safer for anyone working on it. Blessings for good news!

I thought I saw you on the video with the Chateau Diaries with Stephanie and family? Such a great time all of you have had. Think it is wonderful how much you both have in common and to think you will have the grandest life, even after much hard work, but worth it. You both are so much alike with so much in common! Do think that what you are all doing is really something very special and will be such a dream come true! Al of you wil one day become a sort of elite group! LOL Much fun and such delight watching the videos and seeing the castles being restored and wishing I had that opportunity and lived in that part of the country. These castles certainly deserve all of this love and attention. They have given so much to so many and now can once more!

Oh, I’m so excited to see the journey but I am honestly scared for y’all. My dad was a contractor (taught me some clues in looking at a building on if it is structurally sound). Just seeing the cracks in the walls and your saying the chimney stack is leaning just tells me there is some serious foundational issues with this. I do hope you get some protective gear and some engineers or others to help out as well so you don’t accidentally get hit in the head due to falling debris.
