Disabling the High Precision Event Timer (HPET) has been a suggested troubleshooting step in the past to resolve specific gaming issues, particularly those associated with micro-stuttering or frame rate inconsistencies. While some motherboard manufacturers may disable this feature by default in the BIOS, on some motherboards, there isn't an option to disable HPET. In such cases, users need to employ methods like these to turn off HPET.@@ronniecantiga5629

@@ronniecantiga5629If you have HPET enabled in the BIOS, you can disable it in the BIOS. If you don't have the HPET option in the BIOS, you can disable it using this method.

@@ronniecantiga5629 Some old motherboards, especially OEM ones, have this enabled by default, and there is no option in the BIOS to disable it. In that case, you need to use this command to disable it on the OS level.

On Windows 10, Windows does not use HPET as the default clock; it uses a backup clock for certain applications. When some applications require HPET, it becomes available. So, HPET is not disabled by default; Windows controls its behavior of whether to use it or not. As gamers, we may not want to use HPET, even if some applications require it. You can check HPET availability by simply running Command Prompt as an administrator, typing 'BCDEDIT /enum,' and pressing Enter. In the output, you will see 'useplatformclock,' and next to it, you will see either 'yes' or 'no.' If it's 'yes,' Windows is using HPET as the default clock when it's needed; if it's 'no,' Windows won't use HPET as a clock.

"Of course, there is no HPET on a freshly installed Windows. However, Windows will install the drivers for HPET when it's enabled in the BIOS. Some old motherboards and OEM ones have HPET enabled by default, so Windows will use it as the default clock when applications need it. And who says there will be HPET on freshly installed Windows, lol?

What about the "bcdedit /set useplatformtick yes" and "bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes" commands I often see paired with this one in other tutorials? What purpose do they serve?
@RX580Admin
@RX580Admin 5 ай бұрын
bcdedit /set useplatformtick yes - allows the operating system to use the system's hardware clock as a reference for more accurate timing, which can lead to improved performance and power efficiency. bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes - used to disable the Dynamic Tick feature in Windows, which adjusts timer frequency dynamically to save power but can sometimes cause performance issues (stuttering or lag). Note that if you use a laptop, disabling this feature may reduce battery life.
