Ryan, you are the captain of the ship. As a first officer told me when I was new captain, "I can't know what you are thinking, tell me and I will do whatever you want". I think Carlito's request to know the day ahead of time and the number of blocks is a reasonable request.

And honestly, if the math is so quick and easy as Ryan showed... why not just do it and tell Carlito to get X number of bricks in the morning? He can still go pick them up and bring them to the job and build the wall. You're just losing the 30 seconds it took you to do that math, and you know it will be done right.

In all fairness to Carlito, the conversation you had with him should’ve been done before the season started, not in the middle of the job. He probably believed he was just building the wall, not having the responsibility of ordering the blocks as well. Hi Ryan I’m a former Service Manager and have had to deal with many individuals and situations like this as well. I’ve been watching you over the years and notice Micromanagement at its finest here, you’re always giving them step by step instructions and then expecting them to think on their own! 😮 Try delegating or convey what your expectations are from your employees. At that point you will see a leader emerge, who will actually take the initiative and lead, one who will think-ahead and get things done, and you will also see who is just a follower. If a leader doesn’t present themselves, you will need to keep looking. You are dealing with different individuals, and personalities. Not everyone thinks or feels the same. Good luck to you👍🏼

The bosses job is to put his guys in position to be successful. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for Carlito to want to know ahead of time that he has additional responsibilities on any given day. At my previous employer, we had a white board of upcoming jobs for the month. Even if they all got rescheduled or didn’t happen on the expected date, the crew at least knew the type of work that was coming up.

That is like hiring a guy to drive the dump truck then having to give them the CDL class... I would expect to tell a cabinet maker a (draft) drawing with size and shape, and type of wood so they can find out how much wood they would need to make it... I agree with Carlito. That too much responsibility for an employee. What If he orders too much or does the math wrong or whatever. Anything can happen. He doesn't know the end result of the job like you do Ryan. You do the calculations, and you tell him exactly what you need. That how it works and that how it has always been. You wouldn't tell big Ray to just get gravel for 20×10 patio? No. You always tell him the number of yards. Why is Carlito any different? I'm glad he stood up to you. That's the kind of guy you need as an employee to keep the big boss in check.

As the boss, you set the expectations and if you want something done you have to communicate it and ensure there are no questions. How different that situation could’ve been if you went, “Carlito, I want you running point on the wall and really taking ownership of wall projects going forward. The dimensions are ……. Go ahead and get materials. Do you know how to order and determine how many blocks are needed? No? Let me show you so you can do it going forward!” Carlito would now know what you expect, feel empowered and have ownership, and you can offload because you are on the same page.
