DISAPPOINTED BY THE UK CALEDONIAN SLEEPER TRAIN (seat vs. first class)

Of the many choices for travel between England and Scotland, the Caledonian Sleeper is a very popular choice to train cross country in the UK. Unfortunately, we did not have a great experience on the train. In this video, we try the same route in the standard seat AND the most luxury room, the double en suite. The Caledonian sleeper was a big let down on the seat side, and somewhat on the first class side but you tell us in the comments if you would book this ride.
Hope this video was helpful for your journey!

OUR STORY
We're Meghan & Matt, two travelers from the United States on a journey to travel 1,000,000 miles! For 2 years, we lived in our self converted van and traveled all over North America! During this time, we caught the travel bug, HARD. So we set a goal to travel one million miles! Now, we’re hiking, biking, driving, flying and even training around the world to discover as much as possible! Recently, we sold our van and packed up our lives into bags and boarded a one way flight to Europe, leaving behind no house, no car and not even a house/car. From now on, we will be living our of suitcases and traveling full time. How long is this lifestyle going to last? I️ guess you’re going to have to subscribe and follow along to find out!

The reason why the train felt small is becuase of narrow british loading gauge which limits trains on most lines 2.82 metres wide.

Great video and comparison. I'd definitely have complained about the cold food. Bit harsh on the lounge at Euston. I like it in there. It s one of the better ones.

Disappointing but not surprising to hear of your experience. When the new rolling stock was introduced about 5 years ago the price doubled and the quality of the catering fell off a cliff. Previously you could go to the club car and get a freshly made sandwich with salad on a china plate and a miniature glass of wine in a stemmed glass. After you got something in a cardboard pack that looked like it came from Tesco and a plastic cup for the wine. Nowadays if I take the sleeper I don't bother with the catering. I'm old enough to remember getting proper coffee in a china cup at breakfast - now it's a cup of tepid water and a stick of Nescafe. Sigh.

yeah it really was quite disappointing considering the high price of the fare. Our expectations were definitely much higher from the Caledonian website and other youtube videos we watched prior to booking. It was still cool to be able to sleep on a train though!

I have taken the sleeper train from Inverness to London 5-6 times over the past 6-8 years. It is not a great value, but it does save you the cost of one night in a hotel room, which can easily be 200 pounds or more these days. Traveling by train is a nice change from being herded thru airport security lines and squeezed into an EasyJet plane. You can be pretty sure the trains will depart & arrive on time, something you can't be sure of when flying. Also be aware that, if you hold a 1st class ticket, there are lounges you can use in both your departure and arrival cities. Those lounges have refreshments, shower rooms and wi-fi.

Yeah we got to enjoy the lounge at London euston and the not-so-special one in Aberdeen. I think it was cool to sleep in a room in the train but I probably wouldn’t spend the money on this again tbh

I didn’t even know this existed and I’m British. I’ve seen trains go up the country from London / Birmingham to Scotland but not this overnight one. I’d be tempted to try it if the price was right. New subscriber - love your style and can’t wait for more honest videos.

Luxury on a train is relative. Compared to coach let alone 3rd or 4th class in some countries your room was certainly luxurious. It was even luxurious compared to some very dated and spartan rooms I've seen. But compared to some of the world's most famous luxury trains like the Ghan or Orient Express, your room was nice but certainly not luxurious. But it was still nicer than any of the Amtrak rooms I've traveled in except maybe the Deluxe Bedroom. My view is make the best of what you've got.

Disappointing to see the food you were served with your seated experience. I would have called the attendant and pointed out that the pepper was still frozen and therefore inedible and politely asked for a replacement.. I'm sure they would have been very keen to make sure your expectations were satisfied. But it's expensive for what it is and I'd be tempted to bring my own food.

Yeah after the poor service I really didn’t want to deal with her again. They really seem to only care about the first class passengers tbh. If we ever took the Caledonian again we’d probably skip the meal service

@@Meghanandmatt hahaha there is every kind of food from all over the world in London and many other cities in the UK from street food and greasy cafe from £5-10 all the way upto 3 star michelin restaurants costing £££ And traditional British food is amazing. Whats American food??? pizza, hotdogs, fried chicken, pancakes and maple syrup, burgers, fries, man and processed cheese hahaha Italian food is far worse, just pizza and pasta very bland and boring
