What's it like to fly United Ultra Long Haul? Join me as I review the 777-300ER in Premium Plus from Los Angeles to Sydney. Overall, a rather underwhelming experience with United. The service was lacking, food was embarrassing and the delays and cancellations were very frustrating. The seat however, was nice, as were the amenities that United had on offer to Premium Plus passengers. Is it worth the upgrade? Yes, certainly. Not for the service that United offers, but simply for the extra space you have. 16 hours is a long time to be in the air, but this seat was light years ahead of economy. United charged us $399 to upgrade from standard economy to Premium Plus, a great deal considering what airlines charge for premium cabins.

16 Hours and 7500 miles of flying , they put you up, fed you through a cancellation, It even seems that you had a nice crew, decent seat, and in the end we judge the overall airline service based on the fact that you didn't get scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast.

It is not about that alone. First they have to accommodate you for the cancelled flight. It s not like they went out of their way to be nice. And then, I think the point he is trying to make is that you pay a premium price for premium service and there are some things missing. I flew united premium plus once and had the exact same experience. Like you mentioned seat is nice, crew was nice (and generous with drinks) but the food was sub par. You can’t help but start making comparisons. I am not a frequent flyer but flew Texas to Sydney on Qantas in 2015 and remember that food begin better than united premium plus. Turkish has better food on economy! than united’s premium. And I agree that it’s disappointing. He is not acting spoiled if you ask me. It just feels like (at least felt like to me) the service is not in line with the price paid. But this is a compliant long being voiced by people that keep recommending non-us carriers for international flights, service is so much better. That being said, I still have an upcoming flight on united premium. Comfy seat is more important to me than a better meal service in economy. That’s me though…

@@MrMtm13 Yea fair enough but flights being canceled is about par for covid times. If you traveled in 2020/2021 you probably experienced it. How was it handled? Pretty well by accounts of the video. If you can afford to fly Qantas or Emirates when going international then you should. But to compare the service this person got for the price based basically on the difference between a hot breakfast their sister received - completely apples and oranges. Titling the video “Disappointed” is completely egregious imo based on the service/amenities provided given the circumstances of current times.

I could not agree more! When traveling to Europe I don't even bother with US carriers. The only reason to even consider a US carrier for this Australia route would be on Delta as the QF service and reliability of late has been in somewhat of a steady decline and the A350 which Delta now runs on this route seems to have pretty decent service for the price and on a fantastic airplane.

Many folks have their personal devices out, watching movies, live tv, or listening to music. Nowadays, passengers have fingertip access to any flight info. From someone who used to fly very frequently, a good trip report. The lack of hot breakfast on that long of a flight in premium is somewhat surprising. I'd expect a hot breakfast in economy on a flight that long. Flying US versus international carriers is interesting in that the priorities are different. I will probably do Premium Plus if the fare is decent but I want that for space considerations alone and don't have high service expectations. I was a 1K in 2018 and Platinum in 2019 and just was notified of my Gold status for as United didn't extend my old status so I have my 1 Million Miler status. It is sort of liberating. I will probably start flying British in Club to London and Swiss in Business for my other trips. I will now book based on price, hard product and service without regard to carrier or alliance. Reports like yours help me plan future trips.

As a Delta FF for over 10 years, my preferred carrier on the SYD/LAX route was Virgin Australia, especially after they updated their Biz Cabin (1/2/1 vs 2/3/2) on their 777-300ER in/around 2015. It's a shame they liquidated their 777s, as VA is now a domestic-only Australian airline. I will miss VA's international crews and cabin product, especially the in-flight bar at the back of Biz Class.

Golden rule when flying United long haul is either choose the Economy+ exit row seat in the over-wing portion of the aircraft (where there's tons of space) or Polaris business class. Indeed on my last trip to Sydney (pre-pandemic) I flew London Heathrow to Sydney (via Los Angeles) booked in Economy but then did a points upgrade to Polaris business for 35,000 miles + $600 in co-pay. Best part was the whole journey ended up getting upgraded to Polaris business class meaning I was in a Polaris seat for 25 hours + 5 hours at the Polaris lounge at LAX. Oh and the copay actually earned PQP towards my MilagePlus status.

"Premium Plus" is not actually premium despite the name. It is just economy class with a bigger seat and more leg room. Hence the food being mediocre. You have to remember something important. On US airlines, you generally get lesser service than on many non-US carriers, but the prices are generally cheaper. US carriers really fragment the cabins and various travel options, which can keep the price down for the average flier. If you can do without a serious meal, then its the way to go. Actually, the fact that United still serves meals in any economy cabin is refreshing, as they did away with them on most flights, including many transcons and flights from the mainland toe Hawaii once the pandemic got really going, and are only now slowly reinstating meal service across the network. Overall, United offers a good deal and decent if inconsistent service. I personally have a love-hate relationship with them, half of my flights with them being wonderful, the other half compromised by surly employees and poor service. Then again, I fly domestically, so perhaps I'm experiencing a lesser quality employee group than international travelers? Seriously, I've been around some wonderful United employees, some of the best in the biz, and few who just don't care.

I'm sorry you were woken up by the crew! I'm a flight attendant for a different carrier but I'm familiar with the inflight entertainment system. Flight crews are allowed (and sometimes required) to wake you but only for meal services. If you select the settings logo on the IFE you'll see there's a "Do Not Disturb" button. A very comprehensive report. ‘Disappointing’ sure summed up your experience, particularly the food offered in PP. I haven’t been tempted to move away from QF on that route. A couple of points - I thought the climb out of LAX went on a little long… but the take off was great. Oh, & a typo or two: It’s Saks Fifth Avenue, not Sacks, & your destination came up on script as Syndey at one point. Great work 👍

According to this video. The plane itself is a nice size for a flight that long. I do like the inside of the plane. While I was watching the video, I noticed that he was having trouble getting the TV screen out. My best recommendation is to go in Economy class. The good news is that the TV screen worked when he tried it out. Another recomendation is that I never been on any International airlines but try out Qantas to see if you have better service only if the flight is cheap. I never been on a flight over seas. 20 years ago I used to fly between Sydney and Chicago, via LA, every year for 5 years. I flew United Airlines 3 of these times, in Business Class and the service was terrible. The cabin staff were all elderly, cranky and irritable. Not a good experience. I switched to Qantas in the last 2 years from Sydney to LA and American Airlines from LA to Chicago. I had heard that the crew who had flown the longest with UA got to choose which route they took and the old ducks used all love flying to Australia. Shame they didn't love their jobs too.

All US carrier's have the seniority bis system and they all have staff that should be retired and would be under other airline rules of safety. Bodies beaten up, shattered but won't retire and want to say they are in some international destination weekly. I flew as a FA from the age of 21. This is a hard physical job. Even the recurring safety training is not the same in the US. For me I had to pass a swim test evacuation of a large aircraft via slide yearly. They don't do this in the USA. I'm horrified at this.

Wasn't much UA could do about it that point since there wasn't a crew available. They put you up in a hotel etc. I've had it happen on CX/QF/AA etc in F class. The onboard is what you'd expect on such a flight if you're not in business or F. It's just all part of traveling.

the problem from me with united is the people not the hard product nor catering. it's true in economy, it's true in premium cabins. they're just a cut below what they should be. better than american...but not near what you'll experience on alaska, southwest, or delta among us carriers and far worse than standard global average. irrops happens to all airlines, particularly during covid. but united's people are just a cut below. it's true on short-haul and long-haul (i've done iah-syd, lax-syd, sfo-hkg, sfo-sin. sfo-akl, sfo-nrt, sfo-lhr, ewr-jnb all in economy and most in premium economy or business too on united for reference) and it wasn't just the old ones hanging on to seniority...and that's the trouble with the post-pandemic rush to hire to meet demand. frankly, the regional united express partners, especially skywest for me, usually have better flight crew service than mainline. the problem seems to be in the process they use to hire. and that won't get better. united and star alliance go lots of places and i do have high status with them, but i regularly seek opportunities to fly other airlines.

If you got the same breakfast in United’s PPccabin, you could feel a little salty about getting the same as economy does. But in this case , you were worse off than Qantas' economy. Just goes to show, the US airlines really live up to their reputation when it comes to the levels of service they provide. It’s almost only about a better seat and more leg room, nothing else.

Just FYI--That is NOT the domestic United seat in Business/First on their coast to coast legs, as their seats have been lie flat seats (for an additional fee or upgrade with points) for almost a decade now. The comp upgrade list does not apply for Mileage Plus Status members on these routes. The seat shown herein is, however, very nice! As LAX--SYD is the longest leg one can fly, I would prefer to lie flat and get some sleep. But this looks like a good compromise if the price difference is a lot, for those who are budget sensitive.

I have been on a lot of different planes and on many different airlines. As far a flying nowadays I don't find United any better or worse than any of the other major airlines, although I've never flown to the Mid East on their airlines. In August I flew from Berlin to Munich to ORD and back. The flight back to MUC on a UA 787 in Polaris was the best and most comfortable flight I've ever been on in my life. The service was great, the flight attendants were very attentive and helpful. The food was pretty good. I am 6'6" tall and have trouble fitting even in business class sometimes. I was super comfortable and I slept well for almost 8 hours! To make the experience perfect, when we landed in MUC, it was the smoothest, softest landing I've ever experienced. Even the cabin crew announced over the PA that it was a great landing.

Flew economy in an AA 777 that had a 3-4-3 config. Never again. Way too cramped, my knees were in the back of the seat ahead (I’m 6’2); and it was impossible to sleep. I actively avoid US carriers between Aus and US, no matter how cheap the airfares are. Having said that, I once got bumped from a VA to a codeshare delta. Luckily for me that plane also had a 3-3-3 config, and a big enough pitch. Turned out to be a good flight that one.
