On episode 150 of Finnegan's Garage, Mike Finnegan bids farewell to his giant ramp truck, Lincoln Hawk. After recent road trip he discovered that there wasn't enough room in the engine compartment to swap a bigger diesel engine into the truck, which meant he didn't have enough power to tow the trailer he had just bought. So, he sold the big red chevy kodiak square body ramp truck and bought a 2004 Freightliner FL112 semi converted into an RV by a company called Showhauler.
This video is about the purchase and first road trip in the truck, which ended in disaster when the onboard freshwater storage tank leaked 75 gallons of water into the interior of the Toterhome, ruining the carpet and wood floor. Don't worry, we are well on our way to repairing the truck in anticipation of a cross-country drag boat road trip!

Hey, couple things to check on that engine since they don't tend to hit the dealership too often. If it's a egr 4000 There's a egr probe that was removed and plugged due to it breaking off and taking the engine out. Also coolant leaks on the passenger side of the engine are pretty common but if slow enough will dry on the side and not hit the ground so something to keep an eye on

To add to what I said.. Get yourself a food grade hose and a filter to go onto the end of it to replenish the tank. Don't use just a normal garden hose unless you like funny tastes, bacteria, and god knows what else going into your tank that you'll ultimately consume. When stored tanks should be either totally empty or completely full to reduce algae and bacteria growing. Clear tanks exposed to light also increase both growing. That tank just didn't look fit for purpose.

Finnegan, there are 2 different standard wiring sequences for bladed 7-wire connections. I'm betting the "toterhome" is wired in "RV" configuration, and the trailer is in "Utility" configuration. My solution would be add a second 7-wire, allowing for both, "RV," and "Utility" wiring configurations, so you always have the right connection for whatever trailer you pull. Also, 7-PIN wiring is different from both 7-wire configurations, which you could also add, just in case it's ever needed. Add fender mirrors, and you'll be able to see the trailer when turning. Makes things much easier and safer when turning and backing with a trailer.

I recommend Florida Marine Tanks, now located in NC. When I needed a replacement fresh water tank for my 1977 vintage sailboat which they had originally made, they had the original blueprints and delivered me a replacement in three weeks. With an aluminum tank be very careful what you put into it. Always use an in-line filter for salts and other minerals. Sometimes you can get away with real city water, but never with untreated or especially not softened well water. Some boaters winterize their systems with the pink, non-toxic antifreeze. Others just pump their tanks dry and blow out the lines with air. Some, on the other hand, after taking out as much water as possible just put in about five gallons of forty proof vodka and have a spring cleaning party.

Back in 2004, "some" RV manufactures were still putting the water tanks inside the unit. One advantage to that is all the plumbing can be kept warmer when using the rig in the winter. Now a days all water tanks are under trailer. Some have arctic packages, some have a heat pad (12 volts) that keep the water from freezing to a point. To keep the water lines on newer RV trailer flowing, the furnace will have a duct for the water line area. So under the trailer you have a 6" -12" void between the frame bottom and the inside floor. So that is where your in floor heating ducts, water lines and fresh, gray and blacks are.

Big fan of the channel. Speaking of fans, if you replace your roof vents with Fan-Tastic Roof Vents, you will not regret it. Most roof vents have a tiny little fan that just stirs air around. Fan-Tastic has a fully shrouded fan that is nearly the size of the opening and a super efficient 12v motor. A couple of other brands also do similar things, but I have never been disappointed in the Fan-Tastic.

Something I just learned with my enclosed trailer, there is a different pin/color for the 7pin depending on if it is a RV or common trailer. It kicked my butt until I figured that out the night before my first early trip with it... Also just do a metal pan under the tank like a water heater tank with a drain out the floor. Keep the tank inside due to freezing.
@CGT80
@CGT80 3 жыл бұрын
All the trailers I have used have had the 7 blade rv plug, including our dump trailer and my toyhauler and other 5th wheels and camping trailers. The other style is a round pin, so the only way it would be a problem is if you were using the wrong diagram for what you have, or someone changed out one type for the other and didn't reorder the wires to match the plug. A metal pan is a good idea. My water tank is 100 gallons and sits under the trailer and it never froze in the SoCal mountains where it only got down to 20 degrees.........I camped all of 2020 in the mountains for a job. Other places, with colder temps is could certainly freeze. I did add heating pads to the bottom of my gray and black tanks and wrapped the drain pipes with heat tape and also ran a dripper on the cold water winterizing port so that water would circulate from the campground faucet through my trailer and then out on the ground, keeping it from freezing.

Get a tank with all openings, pickups on the top so you wont have leak points below water level. We ordered one 1.5” shorter with all pick ups coming off the top and had an A/C company form up a pan to go beneath it and installed a drain that came out below the outside water taps so if it started leaking we would see it before it became an issue. Nice set up you have now and you get a chance to make it how you want it in the end now too lol
