This video went The tragedy of Manx2 flight 7100 is one where a small commuter plane carrying 12 people crash on landing at cork airport. It was their third attempt at the landing there. Thick fog had meant that visibility was below the pilots limits for landing their plane. During an attempted go-around the plane flipped onto its back after a large asymmetry in engine parameters caused a great imbalance of control. How did Manx2 7100 crash? And what was going on at the Airline? How did this plane flip over on Landing?

Idk who is dumber, the passengers for riding an airline that bragged about flying in any weather, or the pilots who agreed to work for the airline that boasted like that.

@@thomasmills3934 I think it's unfair to call the passengers dumb, we don't know whether the passengers on Flight 7100 had known about this slogan or knew much about the nature of the airline. There's also the consideration that passengers simply booked flights on them because it was cheap or if their company had arranged to fly on the routes Manx2 "operated" services to.

A plane owned by a bank, leased to an airline, sub-leased to another airline, who sub-sub-leased it to Manx2, operated by pilots who work for another airline with registration in another country, going under a detached callsign... seems legit.

This is extremely similar to the Uber business strategy. The difference is Uber has stricter guidelines and their car doesn't fall out of the sky when they break down.

I live right by Cork Airport and I remember that day. Sitting in the kitchen and helicopters suddenly were all over the place. So loud and deafening. Sure enough you turn on the news, sky or cnn news and here's the runway of Cork Airport and then my house as they circled around the place. So surreal and so sad this happened. Never really knew anything after the crash so this was great to watch and learn!

How would anyone fall for it? Well, weather in the UK and Ireland leads to less-than-ideal visibility being the norm. Cancelations are all too common on flights within the isles, and plenty of people frustrated by this have the _perception_ of regional airlines as being over-cautious and refusing to fly in any sub-par weather even when it's still comfortably within the minimums.

It’s because it’s short, concise and gives you a very simply way of understanding everything. Being that the videos are usually between 15-20 minutes it’s the perfect amount of time to keep you’re attention. If the videos were any longer people would lose interest. If they were any shorter it would feel like they rushed through it.

I feel like you've stolen a march on a lot of the other air disaster/airplane channels out there, as this is a case that I've never heard mentioned of anywhere else. The entire subcontractor mess is a real modern horror story, and this is definitely one of the most interesting air disaster videos I've ever seen - bravo.

This happened just two weeks after I moved away from Cork to France. I never had a pleasant take off or landing at that airport (could also have been the skill level of the Aer Lingus pilots, but they always landed properly in Paris CDG). So for someone who is afraid of flying, this was basically anxiety inducing for me. It was always stormy, always foggy and the flights over to France were usually in the morning, I think around 8 am if I remember correctly. We also always had delays for take off and on the flights in we always circled over Cork for a bit until the plane could land. Last time I flew to Cork was in 2016, I am not going to lie, I do not miss it. Dublin wasn't too pleasant either. The two times I flew from there, we had storms. The first one, the flight was delayed until the afternoon. The second one in the evening was cancelled by Lufthansa. They said they don't want to fly under such conditions. When we left the airport to go to the hotel Lufthansa provided, we still saw Ryan Air planes taking off. All the big airlines all decided to stay put, Lufthansa being the first one. Let's just say, paying more for the ticket was the better decision and I felt weirdly comfortable flying with Lufthansa instead of Ryan Air.

I always think one day flying will be free from absurd safety breeches (whether via maintenance, experience, hardware, etc ), but as long as corporate greed/laziness exists I don't think that will ever truly be the case.

Thank you so much for your excellent explanation of this dreadful, so called airline. I think this is the actual aircraft that my wife & I flew from Gloucester Airport to IOM in 2010. As a person who came to the UK from a tiny Caribbean island, flying & aircraft have always held an interest. I so looked forward to this flight, billed as "flying as it used to be"! Yes, the first officer was loading the baggage & once we crawled, really, I am over 6ft. it is impossible to stand in the very narrow cabin, we were given the safety briefing by the same Spanish co-pilot as he knelt on the floor! Unbelievable . We made it to the Isle of Man, but suffered from the terrible noise of the Turbo prop engines. Our return flight was worse. A teenage boy was terrified & cried in much fear all the way back to Gloucester. Visibility seemed good but we had two missed approaches & fortunately made it on the third attempt. My wife, a poor passenger at the best of times, needed a strong drink on disembarkation. The Internet shows over 30 fatal crashes by this Aircraft. You have been warned.

That said, he mentioned in the end that the routes are now handled by Loganair, the airline that does flights from Inverness and flights to Bara (the island where a beach is an official airport), who've are a decently respected small airline. At the very least, they are on the radar in Scotland and known to handle small flights to the islands rather well, so hopefully that means flights to Man are of a better quality now.

@@Grort Manx Airlines were always fine, and I never really had a bad experience with Flybe (who operated to the island before they closed down and were resurrected) flying to or from the island either. Easyjet also fly to the Island. Quality of flights to and from the island aren't really a problem (more the quantity and choice of destinations which won't change because as noted it's far from a massive market).

Brilliant video, I’m from Cork, and this accident was a huge disaster for us. There was never such a crash at Cork airport before this. My uncle worked at the airport at the time and was shocked at this accident. And now, 10 years on, I’m finally getting the story behind it! Thanks for covering this 👍

I had seen this crash on the Smithsonian channel and it was confusing how different airlines and a bank owned the plane and operated it. You gave a really great concise description of how it was all connected! Very much enjoyed your telling of this very sad and tragic crash.

The investigators actually used a 3D laser scanner to show the plane’s trajectory and figure out the way it flipped over.

An almost unbelievable story in so highly a regulated EU commercial aviation sphere. how could such a shoddy patch work of irregularities slip through unnoticed without an inspector sensing something amiss? If Manx had gone down as a company, then surely that should have been a tip off that "Manx2" deserved to be thoroughly looked at.

even sadder is a pilot who left Manx2/Air LADA for Jet2 killed himself due to the guilt - he felt he could have saved everyone on board

I remember seeing this on RTE news that day. I was only 6 or 7 but I can remember it like it was yesterday. It was pretty surreal to see a crash in my home country. RIP to the people who died.

I flew with Manx2 who "operated" a Jetstream 31 out of Blackpool to the IOM, and even then it seemed dodgy.

I'm a new sub, I love your work. If you ever do a non flight disaster video based on airports that have weird runways I suggest Princess Juliana Airport in Sint Maarten(my paternal family are from both sides Dutch and French) I've flown there many times. You can practically wave at the beach goers from the plane I might have a few pics if I can find them if you decide on doing that type of video. Keep up the good work.

I was catching taxis a lot when Uber reached us here in NZ (leg inury, joy) and had some really interesting conversations with drivers about it...? There's significant levels of safeguards in place if you ride with taxi operators, at least here: full vehicle insurance, driver first aid & workplace safety training, thorough employee police checks, in-car security cameras, etc. It seemed at the time that Uber basically only had the background checks & nothing else, which gave me very low confidence to ever try and ride with their contractors...?

You get a lot of these secondary airlines that are painted up in the livery of a major national carrier but are actually not and have been subcontracted to run shorter regional routes.Usually painted on in small lettering is the actual operator of the flight.

Also another pilot working for this supposedly airline committed suicide a short time after this crash due to feeling guilty over the death of the people on the plane that day. I have also flew on this exact plane from Isle of Man to Blackpool and it wasn’t a pleasant experience and had to have a few nips of whiskey to calm the nerves pre flight.

In principle, there is nothing wrong with the business model. The real issue is whether the sub-contractors are fully compliant with all legal requirements. If they are, we are essentially talking about long-term charters, with manx2 acting as a middleman between customer and operator. This is a business model which is many, many decades old. Incidentally even major airlines wet lease aircraft at need or lease their own aircraft from major financial institutions. It isn’t the legal or business models here but the integrity and experience of the parties involved.

Many of those "unusual" things aren't all that unusual. Wet lease is common, as is airline being owned by a bank - both of these are commonly used by many large airlines. Pilots making safety demo is also an absolutely normal practice on commuter planes - there's no one else to do it since there is no cabin crew. Competence of the parties involved in this flight is another matter of course.

I recommend stating flying requirements if important, because in the US you need 1500 hours to fly passenger for the most regional of airlines. That's because you need to earn a commercial pilot license, which could take just 500 hours. But then you need a certificate that stipulates 1500 hours flying time. The dude had 500. I can only imagine how difficult the landing was for him, because he needed 3 times the training and then lost all sense of his power. He likely heard or felt the left side was wrong, but couldn't react in time.

this is basically the airline version of a small school-bus operator using some random cab companies shuttle-minibus... had those at the school I lived 40miles from the school (we were in the countryside) they were always late and made up time by blasting through small villages at 60+mph... the seatbelts, heaters, windows, etc., never worked properly either! saying that, I flew with CityWing once, bought the ticket via another operator, it was a wee-hours flight, Aberdeen-Edinburgh-London_Heathrow... not at all bad, really tiny plane, but took off despite the blizzard and made good time... did not have a clue it had any link to Manx2 (luckily, because I had already heard of this accident by that time)

You have to wonder, would they have crashed if the runway numbers were painted as 16/34 instead of 17/35... it sounds as though on their approach, the runway suddenly became visible but their course heading was too far right, hence the FOs bank to the left and the Captains idle to left engine in an attempt to correct. The unintended overcompensation resulted in their crash. The throttle and control column should be operated by one pilot and never split between the crew

There was an episode of Air Crash Investigation (I think) which covered this crash. Somewhat predictably, the lead investigator was somewhat portrayed as a stereotypical Quite-Man character Oirishman - "Oh begosh and begorrah now Sur..." - rather insulting really. In fact, the actual investigation team conducted themselves as a top-level, world-standard investigation unit - asking the appropriate questions, drilling down and probing until they uncovered the answer(s) - full marks! They subsequently refused (and still do) to take part in any aspect of the docudrama out of respect for those who lost their lives. And yes, I'm Irish - I can assure you the standards required by the I.A.A. are high - VERY high; regulations tempered with common sense (Class 2 medical requirements for the P.P.L. for example). Just sayin'.

EasyJet and AerLingus regional (Emerald Air currently, was a different carrier - Strobart air - prior to COVID) fly from the Isle of Man too. Have done for quite a while. Nice research....

As someone from the Isle of Man, I have heard much about this flight so it is nice to see it covered. I have flown on both Manx 2 and Citywing, affectionately known by locals as s**tty wing. It is interesting to note that Citywing actually collapsed after it had its licence revoked by authorities for trying several times to land in storm conditions. When it landed, said flight wasn't able to taxi to the terminal due to the high winds. It's not the first time it had done that. A friend was on a flight that landed when all others had been called off and said it was a terrifying experience. Glad these "airlines" no longer service the island.

Also worth noting that these planes not only didn't have cabin crew, they didn't have toilets. So, if you got stuck circling and needed the loo you would be stuffed 😅

How these white collar crooks can operate is just crazy but if a bank is involved it is no surprise that they can 'run' free with no fear of the laws.......any of us who would do such things would be jailed and fined....Not these crooks..!!!!ENOUGH

They might've not been the one owning or operating the plane, but it was their name on the machine and it was them who sold the tickets. That should be enough to assure the planes are in reliable condition.

It would be interesting if you could do a breakdown of the plane crash in the English Channel that killed Cardiff City footballer Emiliano Sala. There's a lot of similarities there, although to a smaller scale. Lots of people trying to save money and cutting corners, avoiding taking responsibility.

Oh hey my last few experiences (last being this year) with air serbia were nearly exactly as explained in the start of the video. The planes were not painted at all. The few people on crew didn't speak english or serbian, but they were all very, very young. It was wild. Considering that there are still complaints with flight delays popping up in the news, I believe it's still happening. Kinda curious on what's going on but, considering nobody here cares to document anything, doubt we'll find out.

I live in the Isle of Man and used Manx 2 and City wing numerous times. They always felt a bit unprofessional and dodgy at the time. Logan air, Air lingus and EasyJet who operate now definitely feel far more professional
