I remember seeing the calves being dehorned when I was a kid. Now all the cows are polled Holstein.

Good for you for using an anesthetic. Btw will the flames coming from the side of the dehorning tool burn the calf's ear. I never saw a dehorning tool with flames coming out the sides.

What age can you use the paste up to? We don't take the calves off the cows until they are a couple of weeks old which is when we dehorn them

Well by looking at the calves in the video you can do them that age, you can usually still do it while the horn is still under the hair. But if you can as soon after they are born just seperate them for 40 - 60 min and put the paste on and after that all will be good. Great video Rich your de horning methods are a lot less barbaric than in my Grandfathers day they used cutters and red hot irons they used anaesthetic of course and it was always my job to hold there heads and im sure after words in the shed the calves would give me the evil eyes lol .

Yeah we use it and it works perfectly fine no horns what so ever end up. Some countries like here in Australia you can't buy it you have to import it so it might be the same for the UK. But the one we have is called Dr Naylors Dehorning paste. Google it and it will be there. Good Luck

nature gives them horns for a reason but i do understand that on the farm its not safe but i think the other reasons for why dehorn is done in some places is money as dehorned calf's go at a high price if sold also having no horns In situations where cattle are managed inside buildings and yards horns can be bad news. Horns can cause puncture wounds on other cows and to humans; and horns can catch on pipelines, gates and feeders. And a broken horn on an adult animal can be a real bloody mess.

You should look into getting dehorning paste. All you need to do is rub the paste onto the horn and its done. No need for the anesthetic or the gas burner. Alot easier and quicker

Your hardly using anesthetic for all of them. I de-horned my calves recently, it wasn't nice for anybody. My guide to de-horning. 1. Don't sufficiently prepare before hand 2. Wrestle calves into behind a gate 3. Trap them behind gate 4. No anesthetic and use old de-horner thing 5. Wrestle some more/ swearing a lot 6. Once calf is sufficiently mentally scared for life, release 7. Pick next victim They never look at you the same way afterwards

What a crap thing to do to babies. Humans shouldn't be drinking cow breast milk. How weird is that? What next? Dog breast milk for humans? Time we all grew up and got weaned.
