I have never seen any of my discs with rot. I think a big factor is where the games are stored. I have many sega CD games that are still safe, thank god.

Thanks. It’s a complicated issue. Sometimes it’s from exposure to the elements. Sometimes it’s because you got the bad disc out of the batch being manufactured, some discs like some of the Double layered discs for Wii or the GameCube remake of Metal Gear Solid, is pretty susceptible to rot, due to the flawed way those discs were made. Thankfully there’s ROMs for backup. As of right now the most proven digital data storage is magnetic tape, but even that you want to check up on.

It really can be overwhelming to think about! And thank you for your input as well. It's good to know it's more of a manufacturing issue rather than a zombie disk apocalypse...although... Shoot for the Brain!!

we use to use resurfacing kits back in the days. dont know if it would work for your issue but thats how we saved scratched discs.

@@BrothersForgeGaming I lost my entire game collection for my dreamcast, I never got to play a lot of them, because I had a year left in the military when I bought the house ( because the VA home loan required it or required I has a stabile non job for 3 years outside of the military and I wasn't going to get out the military and rent for 3 years and not be able to afford anything) my ex didn't understand how the VA homeloan worked and thought she was going to take the house in the divorce she planned so she left all my shit boxed up in the garage, all my games had cracks and bubbles through the label side where the game is written into, I was most upset about ill bleed because a friend got it for me as a gift because she knew I liked the evil dead game, the heavy metal game and code Veronica but I never got to play it and my cd case of games were all destroyed shinning a light through the cds looked like a starry night sky 😢, I only moved to Florida because of my ex, I don't like the heat or constantly battling allergies

Must be an american issue....I live in europe and I don't have a single disc with disc rot....even my huge DVD collection is disc rot free 🤷🏻‍♂️....the only exception is Terminator by MGM...it was a production error.

That seems to be the case. Manufacturer errors or poor production quality. Still a mystery as for other reasons, but storage and care are probably among some of the other prevalent reasons.

Someone scratched the front side of the disc and that's what created the holes. Sometimes they are manufactured that way and with cds, it doesn't change and they play fine. Rubbing alcohol damages plastic and never do that with vinyl records. We know how long cds will last because folks put them in dish washers and left them wet for years and nothing happened. You are comparing east coast summer climate with being submersed in water. Personally I have an active group of folks who are trying the legally ban my medicine and spread all types of grifts and pose all types of nefarious questions with bogeyman side effects and then claim "we don't know." You really need to get the facts on the table because submersing a disc in water actually ages it many years. I'm so sick and tired of the fearmongering. And don't ever apply this line of reasoning to medicine especially if you haven't done your homework nor have a doctorate.
