So thankful for so many firemen who helped prevent this from becoming much worse! Also thankful that dad had the disc hooked up and ready to go at a moments notice. We're almost done with harvest...one field left to go!

Laura, your comment about how it was “all the firefighters” that did the work to put out the fire. I would have to disagree. As a firefighter myself, we greatly appreciate the type of work you and your dad put in with the disc. Anytime we can get heavy equipment in there to reduce/cut off the fuel load can save us hours, if not days of work. It is us that thank you for your efforts. Especially when it’s not your job to assume those risks.

Absolutely. With wind you can chase a grass fire a long way without a fire break. The fact that it was harvested before the fire reduced the fuel and flame height greatly. I am part a volunteer department where I live, lots of ranches and subdivisions.

I think the farming community is awesome! Thank you Firefighters 🚒 🔥 🧯 🌽🚜and Cale for your quick response to the emergency 🆘 Laura, your video was very good…as I watched you “looking pretty tiny” next to that combine, I couldn’t help but remember when your city slicker Mom married your Dad. Petite little Megan used to drive all those huge machines too. And made (and still makes) countless trips to and from the fields with hot meals, cold drinks, and supplies of all kinds for Curt, Carla, and Cale. She is in the background most of the time now, but Megan, you are the little city transplant who became an overnight sensational Farm Girl! I love you! Mom (aka Grammy) ❤️🤗

Field fires always bring back stark memories. When I was 12 dad & I spotted smoke from a field across the road from our house. Dad went with the tractor and disk. I went to the house to have mom call the fire dept. (it was 1969 before cell phones). As the sun set it was all flames, red flashing lights and dads tractor lights against the night sky. Eventually dad came back to the house parked his tractor and got his pickup. Never saw him looking like he did that night. The farmer was burning stalks and had his own tractor and disk trying to control the fire. He got lost in the smoke, ran into a deep ditch, tipped his tractor over and was trapped. The fire overtook his tractor in the ditch. He didn’t survive the fire. Dad used his pickup to carry the body out of the field. A very long night I will never forget. Sorry for the sad story but it shows just how dangerous farming can be and what extremes farmers go to for each other. It’s been 52 years and it still sends a shiver down my spine and a tear to my eye when I think of it. BTW: we still own the land next to this field. The tractor still in the ditch.

As a firefighter I can say we appreciate when a machine designed to cover the fuel shows up! We don't have the crop land that y'all have, usually more grass (hay) fires around here. When dealing with round bale fires I always look for a front end loader or 3 point to help isolate the fire. Your dad gets the atta boy today!

We always keep discs hooked up and ready around harvest. In hay (my primary crop) we use field harrows a lot for fire. Best combo is to run at the edge with the harrow in the fire and a fire truck or tender spraying water on top of the harrow or close behind. We work closely with the volunteer fire dept. and they come out and help me burn the hay fields. 👍

I understand what you feel when you see this. I was a firefighter myself for years and fought many brush fires in the woods around our house. (At least in a field, you don't have to worry about a burning tree or branch falling on you) Just a year ago, some kids with fireworks set off a brush fire right behind my house! My family and I were out there with hoses slowing it down until the fire department (all volunteer) arrived. I was so proud of my kids! They were not afraid and stood their ground. Laura, keep you and your family safe out there. Be glad you have others that are there for you just as readily as you are there for them. I would be proud to have you and the family as neighbors!

As the captain of a decent size volunteer department in a semi rural area with a good amount of farm ground I want to say a few things. 1. A lot of people don’t that volunteer fire departments were created by farmers, so back in the day the vast majority of volunteer firefighters were farmers. That’s no longer the case. 2. Between 75-80% of the firefighters in the U.S are volunteer. That means great selfless people running out the door leaving behind their families and missing hours at work to go help strangers. It’s always nice to see all my guys show up to scenes and bust their asses for free to help a strangers. 3. We are always VERY VERY grateful for farmers who show up with risks and water when we have fires in stubble/wheat fields. They obviously have a vested interest in helping us get the fire out (if the crop hasn’t be harvested) but what they can do to help fight the fires is an huge help. We just had a combine fire and we were getting a handle on it, but with two disks it went quickly and there was no crop destroyed. We appreciate y’all!!!

Hi Laura & Grant, loving your channel. As many have commented and I will echo, you are such a loving couple with positive attitudes and seem to work so well together. You remind me of another couple who have an "off-grid" channel. They're a little older and they have several kids but the two of you have similar chemistry as this other couple. As a senior citizen, married to the same woman for 40+ years, the two keys to our longevity is our Christian faith and keeping the lines of communication open. Talk is good, always good. Don't ever harbor your anger or frustration. Get it out, in a non-violent way, and talk it out with your "best friend" who cares about you more than anyone and vice-versa. The only other advice I would have, and it may seem odd and random, but your beautiful, long hair could become hazardous when working around farm equipment. I am not a farmer but my mom & dad were raised on farms and I spent a lot of time on my friends' farms growing up. Several people I knew growing up died as a result of farm accidents, most involving tractors. And with all the moving parts and powerful motorized things that you are around on a daily basis, I would just caution you to be very self aware of your hair or anything around your neck like a hoodie or scarf when using or working with machinery of any kind. Those types of things can so easily get caught up in fast moving pulleys, gears, and such. What are the odds? one may ask, but all it takes is one time in the wrong circumstances and you could get hurt or, God forbid, worse. Be safe. God's speed to both of you.

Very smart to run a disk to stop a fire!

We were dispatched for a cornfield fire in the winter once. Stalks were burning under about 4 inches of snow! It was crazy. Almost couldn’t tell which way it was burning. But I do believe we used a disc to take care of it. That was different. Glad you guys got a quick knock on it with no issues!

Several years ago 3 people died in a prairie fire in the TX panhandle. I think they were trying to move cattle out of the way and were caught in it. Those fires are dangerous. Thank God the tractor and disk were close and your Dad charged in to help.

About 20 years ago some people were badly burned trying to move horses out of the way in a fast-moving grass fire. People don't realise how much radiant heat energy is released in fires where there's lots of surface area to burn, like grass.
