Donna Summer knocked this one out of the park (no pun intended). It was a cover of the Jimmy Webb-penned 1968 song by actor Richard Harris who took his much slower version to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The 60s band The Association actually turned this song down because they felt the orchestration was too complicated. Summer made it her own and it became her first of four No.1's in a 13-month period between October 1978-November 1979. She was on FIRE! For a real treat, check out "MacArthur Park Suite" which runs 17 minutes and 34 seconds. I guarantee, it'll blow you away. Even when I was in the clubs in the 90's, 15 years after this release, this never failed to jam the dance floor. She was one of the greatest female vocalists of all time. RIP, Donna.

WITHOUT Donna there would be NO Madonna and whatever their names are!! DONNA was and is the queen of all beginnings of today's music! … She was the ancestor of all singers who came after her!! ... I first saw Donna on January 10, 1976 in the "Star Parade" when she sang the song "Love to love you Baby"! It was wonderful!!! ...THEN Donna's world career began!! ... A strong melancholy comes up with me again and again that she is no longer there!! ✨💎✨🕯 Thank you

This is the equivalent of watching Donna Summer singing the dictionary: The lyrics don’t matter-and the lyrics to this song are just nuts! But damn she just belts them out and it’s simply phenomenal. Love her so much. She brought it on every tune! A light that shined so bright for way too short of a time. She is sorely missed. 🙏🏻

The big hit for this song was the Richard Harris version. Yes, the same Richard Harris that played Dumbledore in the first 2 movies. Explanation for the lyrics. This is a song about lost love. His love fell apart "like a cake in the rain" and he doesn't think he will ever have another one like it. Someone left the cake out in the rain I don't think that I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it And I'll never have that recipe again

Listening to this is so bittersweet. As a kid in the 70s I do remember her voice being everywhere during the last half of the decade. Think of the biggest female entertainer today and that was Donna in the 70s. You needed all three of the Bee-Gees to compete with her. And hers was the celebrity death that hit me the hardest. More than MJ, Prince, Bowie, George, or Whitney. I think the reason for that is that you could see Donna had a beautiful soul. RIP Donna. You are deeply missed. 🌹

Cool that you're listening to Donna Summer. The next one I'd love your reaction to is "I Feel Love." The first time I heard that record it was like the world changed and suddenly there was a new music at hand. Many consider it one of the key songs that ultimately led to Electronic Dance Music. The synths in that song are amazing and, in the mid 70s, hit like music from another planet!

The real genius of her sound was her producer, Georgio Moroder. He was the Godfather of synth orchestration and is actually still producing in his late 80's. He was the one who put her in a dark room and asked her to just act as if she were being seduced. He added the music later in the studio. It was her first hit, "Love to love you Baby".

Since neither Richard Harris nor Donna Summer were Los Angeles natives, they perpetuated the mistake of calling it MacArthur's Park when it's actually MacArthur Park (in the Westlake section of L.A.). Jimmy Webb, the writer, originally from Elk City, Oklahoma, used to work at a music publisher nearby the park and he would meet his girlfriend for lunch most days there. They broke up and he wrote this about that sad time for him.

Donna's version of this song came out at the beginning of my 8th grade year (September 1978). I lived in Indiana at the time, and for some reason, I assumed this song was about a park in New York. Now, I live near the actual MacArthur Park she's singing about, and it's in Los Angeles! I've lived in SoCal since 1984, but not in L.A. Then, I moved here for a teaching position in 2019. I happened to drive past the park, noticed its name, and Googled it when I got home. I thought it had to be another park with the same name, but no! It's THE park! At that time, it had become a park you probably would not want to spend time in, but they have been cleaning it up. I try to envision what it was like when the song's writer, Jimmy Webb, was meeting his girlfriend there--the inspiration of the song. Who knew it was a real place with a real story? Attached is an article about it. pophistorydig.com/topics/macarthur-park-and-jimmy-webb/

This song was originally a massive hit for actor Richard Harris in 1968. (Yes, the guy who played the Professor Dumbledore in the first 2 Harry Potter films)

Even Donna said that all she had to do was sing the syllable "tah" & the technicians would hold out the note & do all the rest. But she was like, "Nuh. Uh-uh. That's not what I do. That ain't what I'm about." SUMMER CAN 𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐆, DAMMIT. ♡

“Someone left the cake out in the rain”. This song had some crazy lyrics but it didn’t matter. The strobe lights were going off. The disco ball was spinning. And I was in the middle of the dance floor having the time of my life. Thank you Donna for some great memories.

The cake was a metaphor for the writer’s relationship; ‘it took so long to bake it’ being how long they’d been together.

Reminds me of my mom. She would sneak out the house and go to the disco. She would tell me “don’t answer the phone don’t open the door, and go to sleep” 😂😂😂

Donna’s daughter is half of the famous musical duo called “Johnnyswim.” Her mother was Donna Summer. She and her husband sing many beautiful songs. They tour as well. You would enjoy their music.

You guys should really check out The Cowsills, they were a family group like The Osmonds, and in fact, The Partridge Family show (with David Cassidy) was based on them. My suggestion is 1967's "The Rain, The Park and Other Things". It's got the true hippie flower girl vibe to it.

Donna was always Great whatever she sang, and she owned it. You ought to give the original 1968 version of "MacArther Park' by Richard Harris. Harris played wizard Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter movie and the Sorcerer's Stone.

The next listen for Donna Summer should be "Dim All the Lights" so you can hear her belt a 19 second single note. It is the longest female single note (no pitch change) in a U.S. Charting son. Barbra Streisand’s “A Piece of Sky” has a 19 second note but it didn't chart on Pop or Adult Contemporary (it's from the movie Yentl.) Even for Opera singers, 19 seconds is long! There are a few longer ones, men and women, going for the record that run up to 30 seconds or more but they are not on hit records.
