This is the latest incarnation of a project to convert a common eBay "10W airship" disco light into something much more subtle and ambient than the original pulsing and flashing monstrosity.
This latest version has the most sensible approach to operating across a wide voltage range by using two sections of 32 LEDs, each with their own capacitive dropper. This also makes the circuitry very simple and the power consumption is low at around 5W.
Since the circuit is now tested I'll probably put the gerber files on my website as a zip file to let you get them made by PCB companies. Note that this project is designed specifically for the "airship" case and is only suitable for those used to working with mains voltage circuitry.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
www.bigclive.co...
This also keeps the channel independent of KZfaq's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

@@tncorgi92 The problem may be more wildfires - early-season rain encourages a lot of new growth, and with Spring officially starting in 20 days time, the weather can go from pretty cold (albeit by our standards) to pretty warm in a very short time. Thirty ++ deg C days are not that uncommon especially in later spring, and with no rain that new growth turns to tinder very quickly indeed.

It's interesting your AC mains is high voltage this time of year; mine has been down as low as 113v recently from everybody's air conditioning. Earlier in the year it actually stayed spot on at 119-121v. It would've been nice to see this version use a design like you described as your second version. Then you'd only use half the rectifier diodes and the power factor on 240v would be better. Maybe a future version 5 could keep the two identical halves here, but be jumperable between series and parallel for the two different voltage ranges.

@han5vk
@han5vk 4 жыл бұрын
There isn't much air conditioning in European homes :)
@eDoc2020
@eDoc2020 4 жыл бұрын
@@suspicionofdeceit They can adjust it at various points on the line, see Bobsdecline's channel for lots of powerline info. The thing is voltage drop is produced all along the lines and I am at the end of the line. Houses closer to the line voltage regulator probably are still getting full 120v, probably a bit higher. I just did a bit of research and there is a standard ANSI C84.1 for mains voltage here. It says the voltage should usually be 114-126v at the meter and 110v-126v at the outlet, or infrequently down to 110v at the meter and 106v at the outlet. So the lower voltages I saw were still in tolerance. One time recently I even saw the voltage oscillate up and down a volt or two every second, presumably this was the regulator trying to keep everything in check.
@eDoc2020
@eDoc2020 4 жыл бұрын
@@han5vk I figured there probably wasn't too much air conditioning in Europe (at least not in the north.) Over here it has become much more common in recent decades, and AFAIK Europe tends to have older homes which would have been less likely to be built with AC.

To keep the LED's in a good uniform position you could 3D print a support frame or CNC some transparent PVC and add a few small random spots/grooves. The frame could be used to help position LED's and then even left in place once assembled (hence the CNC'ed spots to catch light...... and demons)

In the past I've seen Clive having to replace "used up" capacitors in the 'capacitive dropper' circuits of low cost line operated devices. The problem seems to be common in other countries but here in the US I haven't seen any problems with the capacitors. I think that the 120VAC is so much less than the 275VAC maximum rating of the capacitors that the overvoltages almost never exceed the capacitors' maximum and there are seldom if ever any damage done to the capacitors. In the case where the AC line voltage is nearly 275VAC, like in the UK, there are times when the capacitors maximum is exceeded and the capacitor experiences a punch through of the insulation. But this causes the capacitor to isolate the damage and the capacitance drops by a small amount. Eventually the capacitor loses so much of its capacitance that it can no longer pass enough current to do its job. I guess the best solution is to put two capacitors in series, each with twice the value. The overvoltages will be half the total on each capacitor and hopefully the insulation will not be damaged, and no loss of capacitance will occur.

Clive, I found that some white LEDs will put out 2 Volts or so in sunlight or being lit by an UV or white LED. (not much current though) That got me wondering about a Light Transformer, where a number of parallel wired LEDs shine into group of series wired LEDs to give a higher voltage to bias a FET circuit. (not much current needed)
