The Revealing Science of God has to be the most criminally underrated song in this entire genre. I’m 34 and just got into this band a year ago and when I got to TFTO it didn’t click at first. After 10 listens it became my favorite album by these guys. I’m seriously convinced the critics just phoned in their reviews and didn’t give the album a proper chance. Frustrates me way more than it should. Lol

Exactly. Reviewers had to write soon their opinions for magazines and they didn't give the album a proper listening. Sad.

Also the general music trends in the UK and America were about to shift towards a glam/punk aesthetic, and the music presses were literally turning against the very supergroups that they were praising only a year before. Even though it had only been three or four years of affluence, the rock media 'decided' that the progressive rock scene and the large scale stadium rock acts were suddenly bloated and pretentious. They knew that t he new guard would be a garage DIY middle finger to the prog/art rock phase and were paving the way. Interesting that the current young generation seems unmoved by the punk sound of the 70s and 80s but is starved for the epic, sprawling beauty of 70s prog rock...Time has spoken.

Wow!!!! You are the greatest living Yes expert , thank you thank you....I listen to their music more now than I ever did when I was a young fanatic. They are one of the only rock bands that deliver exuberant fury that lifts up the soul, the power of joy is not easy to achieve, anger and misery is easy. Topographic oceans is indeed too sprawling and meanders often, however it also contains some of Yes"s most breathtaking and sublime moments in their whole catalogue. So I still listen and listen....

@@wendellwiggins3776 The Ancient is a good example of a piece that meanders. The first six or eight minutes are terrific then it seems to digress into a long sequence of clatter and noise. Even though it is all carefully arranged, it sounds like a jam right up until the 'Leaves of Green' finale, which showcases one of Howe's greatest classical guitar pieces. So, the middle was the issue for me. The Remembering seems to really drag at times, I think it is because they keep returning to verses and long passages that we have already heard with the same delivery. Those long drawn out phrases, 'mooove faaaasst, tell Meeeee...' just make the whole piece feel even longer to me. BUT, the 'Other Skylines/Relayer section, OMG!! within this long meandering epic there is hidden a little four minute masterpiece!! Like I said, there are many of YES's most beautiful moments throughout 'Tales'.
@wendellwiggins3776

@@markjohnson4217 There is no clatter and noise. What seems to be is to my ears is a well artistically, adventurous beautifully arrange & well conceived mysterious composition. The transition in and out of the searching through time guitar solo into the transcendent mystical "Sun" lyrical chants, all reinforce the "Ancient ancestral" theme which reemphasizes the narrative of the story being expressed and viscerally transmitted through sound. If you think it meanders then maybe it's rather a lack of patience & not your cup of tea. To me, It's exactly as it needs to be. I never get impatient because after the first 8 bars the music continues to fluidly shift as if deeper into the depths of our unconscious past memories.

TALES IS BRILLIANT!!!!! I saw the Tour YOUNG MAN and at the time there was NOTHING like it. Another great LEAP into creative imagination! IT'S NOT A ROCK ALBUM perce....so you must listen with different hears and sensibility. If they had made another MOZART 5TH Rock people would have complained. What they did was similar and just as innovative for modern times. I love your SPELL reference but THERE IS NO WASTE IN TALES! Your critique is typical of those you just CAN'T get it overall/ TALES is a MASTERPIECE. through and through. A VISCERAL EMOTIONAL JOURNEY INTO THE COSMIC SOUL! RURE YES with NO commercial or mainstream FILTER ! Wakeman does an excellent job but just because he's not out in front as much doesn't matter. bc STEVE< JON< CHRIS ALAN are INCREDIBLE

I REBUKE ALL NAYSAYERS and hack Critics! Upon release TALES was already GOLD and is still one of their bestselling releases. If you were seeking a purely Rock orientated YES album, then that's your problem. I LOVED ALL of IT immediately in 73 at 17 years of age! Saw it LIVE and cried Tripping the entire show! As a fan since 71, by the time TALES arrived I knew that each new YES album was going to be a totally new experience yet still I was unprepared for this unprecedented masterpiece. TALES' epics stories begin & unfold perfectly with THE REVEALING from its slow ocean building prayer/chant that burst into the gorgeous opening theme to the last note of RITUAL. As Existence is revealed lyrically & sonically you are taken through the journey of life, then spirituality into THE REMEMBERING of nostalgic childlike memories into our deeper mysterious and mystical ANCIENT ancestral past which all leads us toward gratitude for it all expressed through the ceremonial celebration of RITUAL. This is the context "within" all visceral ideas & structure of the music is conceived which is felt within the writing & arrangements vividly. EACH movement is a VISCERAL cinematic adventure with NO FILLER, NO LINGERINNG! Every section and note has depth, meaning and deep emotion that flows SEAMLESSLY. I have always loved TALES from day one and Rick who performed some of his greatest moments or anyone else who can't appreciate its brilliants FULLY are simply MISSING chromosome that allows others to. TALES is a journey into the Soul and "apart from any reality that you've ever seen or known" "We must have waited all my life for this...moment...moment...Moment...MOMENT!!! (Where's The Prog Corner on this panel? Listen to his review of TALES)

Thanks again for another wonderfully entertaining review. You've done a pretty good job of scaring me off from holding my nose and plunging into this album. I have it, for the first time in my live ever, on the Steve Wilson remix. Maybe that will help it?? I do like Ritual and have heard it several times on the live albums. Maybe I'll go and listen, again, to Talk before tackling this whole thing (love Talk, immensely). I'm hoping I'll end up being one of those people that absolutely love Topographic, but .... Relayer? I have it. Listened to it a few times. Connecting with it? Hmmm??? Maybe your review will help me. I don't know why I respond to your reviews. Doubt you read these any longer? But in case you do, I want you to know that your efforts aren't wasted and are much appreciated.

This video has the hubris of “I’m not thinking of this as one glorious piece of music, as intended, I’m thinking of it like a pretentious rock album. Maybe I should take a step back and get off my high horse”
@GenoSamuelOfficial

If the original intention by the musicians was to make a “glorious piece of music” that’s pretty pretentious. I didn’t even slam it outright. Half of it is superb. Most of the ruination comes from Howe.

Progressive rock as genre has Jamie Muir to thank (or curse?) for loaning the auto-biography in question to Jon Anderson. From this point, Yes began a downward trend and King Crimson starts on a second period of creative ascendency with "Larks' Tongues In Aspic". Conspiracy Theory?
