Just a quick question. Do you even know that Iran had a Democratic elected president before the Shah? Do you know that Shah rebelled against the democratic elected government once oil was nationalized in Iran? For those that are reading and don't understand what nationalizing oil means, well it means the oil is owned by the country. You see foreign companies, such as Shell, used to own oil rights. A country like the UAE didn't have complete ownership of oil rights until maybe the 1990's. Oh, also Libya had a king that used to provide free meals and clothing to all kids at school. He was taken down after nationalizing oil and Qadafi took over. Obviously the dude was crazy but he initially was pro west and reversed nationalizing oil. I was there in the 70's. I remember Jimmy Carter welcoming the Shah in his U.S. visit. I don't remember what came of it, however. The next thing I knew, the Shah was toppled and Iranian students kidnapped the U.S, embassy workers.

He did apparently rule with an iron fist but that only applied to political parties and free expression. He did not interfere in people's personal lives and freedoms. At the time a lot of the rural poor that worked in Tehran became Khomeini's foot soldiers because his words resonated more with the religious poor folk from rural areas. Shah's highly centralized economy meant that he ignored the small towns, most of which were fairly religious and conservative. In order to find work those folks would go to the capital Tehran, which ended up being his downfall alongside his own propping up of the Mullahs against the communists, a huge mistake he paid dearly for.
