This guy was 100% correct. These retailed in USD for about $6600 and are now trading $10 to $15K for pristine plus box and papers as of April 2021.

I honestly think they made the 41mm OP and discontinued the OP 39mm to avoid competition with the Explorer 214270. My two cents at least.

The mk1 is a masterpiece, whoever does not understand the size of the handles has not seen how they merge with the white gold numerals, it’s a superb watch and definitely a future collectors ROLEX

I absolutely love my Mk II. Honestly think it's about perfect at 39mm (and I have small wrists) unless you have a purist's zeal for the 36mm. I can't see them discontinuing the 39mm and upping it to 41mm unless they have a 36mm and 41mm. Whilst I'm sure a lot of people would love the split sizing I don't think they'll do it.

This watch is superb, whoever says the handles are too short has not seen it in person, they are the perfect size to “merge” with the white gold numbers, incredible. Now the Mk2 does the opposite and covers them. It is just perfect!

I’m in the same market for one. Saving for one. Hopefully by November for sure. It doesn’t help when you get KZfaqrs hype the price. Hopefully these rumors don’t inflate the used prices. Look what happened to the Batman thanks to Rolex Passion Report. They blogged a rumor about the discontinuation of the oyster Batman in 2017. They inflated prices because of that. As long as I can get one at retail of less I’ll be happy.

I thought about a no date sub as well to differentiate them a bit more but getting one from an AD isn't going to happen anytime soon. Even considered getting a black bay or pagos instead

I have the same problem when considering the Submariner... I prefer the No-date or Daytona (my fav, ofc). The Day-Date is a consideration, but, usually they are a smaller size and, yeah, the eye is a love-hate deal.

The reference is 10+ years old, has an old movement, and may be undersized for the direction Rolex is going in, so I agree that its time may be up....but here's the thing, I believe that of all the upgrading Rolex has had over the past 70 years, the Explorer, by far, has the least amount of references/refreshes, keeping it very steady in long-term production...

I think it has a place in the lineup....Once you remove the OP 39mm, then the Explorer is the only 39mm model available...it bridges the gap perfectly between the 36mm (Datejust and OP) and the 40mm+ (GMT, Submariner, etc) models. I think they'll update it soon, discontinue the reference, updated movement, maybe a slight dial reconfiguration, but if they discontinue the model altogether, then you'll go from a 37mm LADIES Yacht-master, to a 40mm GMT....it feels like there should be a 39mm model in the lineup....the Explorer fits perfectly in that slot! And then you'd have to rename the Explorer II, turn it into the Explorer, or rename it entirely.....Besides, the watch is one of the most iconic models the brand has....there's too much history, I don't see it going away...

Lol I just sold mine. Always felt a wee bit too small for me. I don’t think it’s a good idea to worry about what will or won’t happen, get what you love, no need to keep what you don’t.

@@caponnettoc just over 7. The sweet spot for me which feels right is a lug to lug of about 50 which is close to the edge of my wrist, my El Primero 42, Tudor GMT, and Air King all wear about the same in that zone despite being different sizes (42, 41, 40). At 45 the explorer is a size down.

@@caponnettoc I think it’s too small a sports watch your wrist size (1980s / boomer fashion). There is an AC3 video where he talks about being teased his 36 Explorer was “a wee bit too small”. If I was you and you want that minimal style I would angle for the 41 black OP (which supposedly isn’t much difference size wise from 39s).

Recently purchased one retail just over a week ago. I had a long talk with the chap at the AD and he said something is in the air around the Explorer 1, he didn't know what but suggested a price increase was imminent.

This worries me. I love this watch. I want this watch. I can’t get it now. I like Austin Daniels theory that Rolex needs to keep watches of different sizes. 39, 40, 41 etc in their sports models. That’s what I’m hoping anyway!

Totally correct. The only ones around 5000 are mark 1’s. The Mark 2 are already around 6000. I think they will only go upwards especially as it is likely to be discontinued.

Hmmm... Considering the 214270 in 39 already wears like a 41, I can’t imagine how big it would wear if Rolex decided to go with a 41mm case. No discontinuation IMHO

The current Explorer 39 is actually 39.8mm so basically 40. Fans hated the size increase in 2010 preferring the proportions of the older 36 which is actually 35mm. I see Rolex doing the same as the new Sub. They will keep the same diameter 40mm but widen the bracelet to 21mm and slim down the lugs. Then it might look more similar to the classic 36. Add the newer movement and maybe add a white version to celebrate 70 years in 2021. Rolex never looks backwards!

With next year being the 50th anniversary of the Explorer 2, I would suspect that Rolex may well wait at least another year thereafter to make changes to the 39mm Explorer. The hype will be all about the Explorer 2 and they will want a separate set of hype for the 39mm. I agree with you David on the price premium once discontined, just look at the OP 39 mm, especially black dial prices (albeit a short production run with that particular movement) and the Explorer is a far more iconic watch than the OP in my view.

Agree 100% this will be discontinued in the next 18 months and upgraded in size and new movement. Explorer 39 IMO is the best one watch watch. I think it will also create further hype and demand for 114270/14270

Bump up to 40mm get the new gen movement in there and throw in a blue sunray dial and I’d take a second look. They perfected the 39mm version with the longer minute hand and lume show. But it’s not a piece that sings to me in its current format. Of course if they facelift it next year forget it. It’ll be another Submariner costing way over list at which price point I’d walk. Or run...

I have one and I am very happy. its pure perfection and it will go up in price 100%. but I do not believe that it will be in bigger size. this size is set for explorer already then when they done maxy case for submariner. that is it. 39mm size will stay just for explorer model. and it is so cool and this factor will move up explorer in price dramaticly

I agree it sits oddly now with the unexpected discontinuation of the excellent 39mm white. To abandon the 39mm size altogether seems extreme as bridge between 36 and 41mm is a large one. COULD it indicate that a 39mm white dial Explorer I could be a new addition to the range? This sits more comfortably with me than the removal of 39mm altogether. Thoughts @David?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I think the Explorer deserves to be left alone like the Day Date/Date Just 36mm. It's the only Rolex that doesn't scream "hey I'm a Rolex". It's bad enough the 39mm stands out because of the large dial.

It might be upgraded and a size increase to 41. They are going for slightly over retail. Personally I don’t like how it wears. I prefer my old 36mm but that Explorer feels cheap compared to the 39mm. If they refine it a bit maybe. This would be a big mistake because this watch is the center of all Rolex. It’s the most diverse versatile watch Rolex makes. It’s already a staple of Rolex like a Day Date or Date Just. Rolex please don’t F this one up. Yeah please don’t hype the price up LOL

Rolex never looks backwards. They know that fans disliked the larger proportions so l think that they will keep the current size which is 39.8mm add a 21mm bracelet and thin the lugs just like the Sub. Then it will look like a large 36.

@@stephens2r338 Rolex is clever or notorious for making bracelets not fit on different references. Yes I can see Rolex making a 21mm bracelet and a dial proportion change. Not to mention Rolex upgrade every reference 5-10 years, one collection at a time. Knowing Rolex they already planned to increase the case sizes 5-10 years ago. If they ever scale back case sizes, it might be in another 20 years. They stick to production plans even if it goes against what people want or what the current trends are. I am done with Rolex. I own a 36mm Explorer 114270 a pre-ceramic Sub 14060M, and a 114060 Sub. That I might sell to fund more watches. The only Rolex that I like is a Pepsi. But, it's no longer a everyday tool watch. It's a sporty luxury watch. To expensive to bash around, too blingy to wear with jeans & a t-shirt. Noodies and hype are what keeps Rolex in demand. Rolex lost the celebrity market. Yes they wear Rolex but most famous people have grown past Rolex and into high end horology. Just look a Hip Hop artists. They don'y buy Rolex, they buy Patek AP Hublot. Movie stars wear Rolex as if Rolex was Swatch watches. Wealthy people buy Rolex for their kids who graduated high school. Rolex lost the desirability from wealthy upper class. It's no longer a big deal for them even though they still buy Rolex. For them a Rolex is like a G-Shock. There is more demand fro Rolex from middle class working people. Which Rolex does not want lower class people wearing their products.

David, What do you think about the future of the SD 43? Now that the new Sub is out that is virtually identical to the average person. Do you see that both the SD 43 and the new Sub can coexist for much longer? The old Maxi case sub and the previous SD did not coexist for a long time. I'd like to hear your opinion.

David, you surely don't _really_ believe Rolex are likely to discontinue entirely such an iconic model as the Explorer? As for upping the size again in line with the slightly bigger Sub...well maybe.... But for me it makes sense for the Explorer to remain smaller, relatively speaking, because historically the model always was smaller than other Rolex sports watches such as Subs and GMTs, wasn't it? It was only 36mm until not SO long ago...

Very unpopular opinion - Explorer 41mm and 36mm for the next release using the same cases and movement like their 2020 36mm and 41mm OP`s and clasp from the professional watches. Very interesting and versatile middle ground for something more than just OP and not quite full fledged sport watch.

A good tell I think would be to see what the 36mm are doing in price, now discontinued... Watches are defo getting bigger and bigger, but I don't see Rolex disc the 39mm for 41 on this. The Explorer I think holds it's elegance in simplicity, utility, and not being a oversized statement.

39mm argulably fills the gap in the OP line and differentiates the Explorer a bit. It'll probably be upgraded, but wouldn't be surprised to see it stay at 39mm or indeed anywhere in the 37.5-41mm range.

David I think you are correct. Thanks for your input it's always beneficial for us to know what a person who is in the trade is thinking about all the changes that Rolex is making. I myself just scored big time this past Sunday. I acquired a brand new submariner date 40mm in what the AD refers to as the retired Sub with the new green card. I'm thinking it's got to be one of the last of the mohekians. What a piece of art.... and I know it's just a sub but I like it more than the new 41mm with the 21mm bracelet and that immense clasp... no thanks.. especially now that I had both in my hands and the new one seems like a brick, I mean the clasp... its just way to thick.... excuse the long rant and keep on making great videos. Thanks again!

No..they need one simple Sports Watch. Problem is with the new 3200x moment (shock absorber) where would this go? Same with milly and AK. 1. DJ and OP ( classic watches) 2. E1 /AK/Milly Used to provide some type of better moment (anti mag / shock) but now the new 3200x has that in the OP and DJ. 3.Sports with functions (GMT/Diver/Chrono)

As an owner of a 214270 Mk2, i don’t think the size will or should change as its perfect at 39mm. Only gripe i have is that the power reserve at 48 hours is too low and quite frankly unacceptable from such an expensive watch.

Hi Great Chanel. 5* I watch some videos on how watch dealers buy for instance l Rolex, AP etc., put aftermarket diamonds and sell those for let say £20k (explained that it is aftermarket), but factory settings would cost £120. What the law says, just wondering how is this ok, because if this watch goes in the wrong hands dealer or person that was cheated as factory settings, same this watch can be sold as original factory setting.

Currently the best investment Rolex to buy is the last version of the Explorer 114270 with rehault. Intrestingly nobody talks about it ? it was only available in 08 and 09 during the finance crisis so few were sold. In the last 3 years it has doubled in value. No other Rolex model comes close.

I don't see anyway they don't discontinue this model soon. Isn't this the only 39mm Oyster Perpetual model they still make?? Doesn't seem cost effective to make just one watch in that size. Plus the movement is due for an upgrade too. I would bet sometime next year you'll see a 41mm Explorer with a new movement.

What do you think about the OP 114300 39mm in white Dial? Its discontinued right now. I think that watch will go up in price. Very few watches from Rolex comes with a complete white dial and they only made the white dial on op 114300 from 2018-2020

It’s always been smaller than the Sub and the GMT and with the further distinctions Rolex is making between the two models I think it will stay at 39mm but you never know.

The Explorer may get updated - - perhaps with a new movement - - but I seriously doubt that this iconic piece will disappear from the Rolex Professional Line altogether.

Yeah, doubt they'd leave such a blaintant gap. Shift to the 32 series movement next year for sure tho

It took me over a year to put the cash together to get one and now that I got it I'm glad I did. I love the watch because of what the watch is but I'm glad to see the prices going up specially the MK2 mint with box and papers. And yes it got discontinued the crazy thing is that the new model is back to a 36. So Rolex ran the 39 for 10 years 5 Mk1 and 5MK2. Such a classic. Rolex may never make a 39 Explorer again.
