Just got back from Rome/Naples! We were there Feb 3-11, and it really was the PERFECT time to go! No crowds at all, weather was just a tad on the chilly side but with jackets we were just fine. Plus, that led us to one of our favorite parts of the trip... the cioccolata calda!! We still had plenty of gelato, too, but the hot chocolate and pastries were a daily ritual. Anyway, your videos were an amazing help in our planning process. Thank you so much!!

Elyssa, we followed your advice and arrived in Italy at the end of November. Florence first then to Vietri sul Mar and Naples, and on to Catania. We had plans to stay for over a week in Rome before leaving for home. Short days, but it was a good time to come visit. Thank you. After the first two weeks my body said it was time to stop, so we will come back for Rome another time, wiser and rested, lol.

We loved Rome and Florence (and other areas) in February. The best Valentine's of our lives! We've been there a couple of times in July, very hot and crowded but still enjoyed it very much. The absolute worse time for us was August. The heat and hordes of people were way too much. We will never go there again in August! But we would definitely go again in winter or early spring.
@Romewise

Yes, for many people, July and August are when they can come and then often, they say never again. So as I mentioned, if you CAN choose, then winter or early spring is a great option! Glad to hear you were able to enjoy a quiet Valentine's Day in Rome and Florence!

Yes, February is excellent, especially if you are not here on a busy weekend (Free Sunday, Six Nations Rugby match, Carnival). Glad you got to enjoy it! I am currently basking in Rome in freezing January because I love this light and how quiet it is. Don't get me wrong, after what we went through with the pandemic, we needed tourism to come back, and come back it did! But now that it's back, I can relish these quiet times again. Thanks for watching and for your kind words!

I’ve been coming every February…partly to escape New England winter..but this year came before Christmas. Oh my! I was flabbergasted at how crowed it was. But like magic the dat after Epiphany, things calmed down. BTW I took your tips on Santa Marinella and the Keymaster tour. The tour was a once in a lifetime experience. So many thanks.😊

Yes, agreed, February is a great time to visit as long as it's not on a crowded weekend. And yes, as you discovered, Christmas in Rome and Florence is really busy, but as soon as the Epiphany is over, it quiets down A LOT. So nice to hear you enjoyed both Santa Marinella and also the Key Master tour! Thanks so much for letting me know you find my advice helpful!

I've been to Rome in July, late May, and the first week in November. May 2 years ago was the worst temperature wise. November last year was like a British summer. 4 days at 20c and dry. 3 days rain but still mild. It's the 3rd week of April this year to catch Romes' birthday as a birthday present for my brother. Yes, I love Rome.

Haha…I’m one of the tourists that came in the winter. Was just in Rome last week and now in London touring the British streets. You have to get up early to go site seeing and do the early tours to get the nice photos. It’s been an adventure and I’ve learned a lot on my first solo trip. Winter ain’t easy, but it’s doable.
@Romewise
@Romewise 5 ай бұрын
Great! Yes, you have fewer hours in the day to enjoy sunlight, but one of the points I was trying to make is how special it is to sightsee when the sun goes down. For example, the Pantheon closes at 6:30/7PM year round so if you go late in the day, you will be inside when it's dark out, and it's a whole different feeling. Glad you got to enjoy Rome and London in quiet winter!

We were in Rome and Florence last week and it was great! In Florence there were not that many tourists, it wasn’t overcrowded at all. But I think it was like that because it was really cold and windy. But in Rome on the other hand there were a lot of people. I’ve visited Rome also in June and it was somehow similar. All the streets were extremely overcrowded in the evening, I didn’t expect that in January. But if we speak about the lines to get the ticket to Colosseum, then yes it was way faster as it was in summer.
@Romewise
@Romewise 5 ай бұрын
Yes, sometimes in winter, it can be lopsided. You think a random Tuesday in January will be quiet but there are crowds, but then you go to the Vatican on a Sunday morning and it's quiet. Either way, winter is still the best for enjoying Rome and Florence where crowds are concerned. They are still way smaller than in the spring, summer, and fall! And yes, as you saw, the lines are shorter or nonexistent, too. Glad you got to enjoy it!

Yes my kids are currently in school and when we do take them out for a family vacation we get attitude from their teachers and we get letters stating that as parents we need to schedule our vacations when there’s no school. So we will be going to Italy during the start of summer vacation which is the last week of May. We will visit Rome, Florence, Pisa and then Venice.

Yes, I find this is probably THE limiting factor for many who travel to Europe - trying to plan around a school calendar - whether it's kids in school or perhaps someone in the family teaches. And that means summer travelling when everyone else is. I hope you and your family will have a wonderful trip to Italy - just brace for crowds!

@Romewise
@Romewise 5 ай бұрын
Yes, I understand - August is hot and crowded in Rome and Florence. It's hard to enjoy your visit when it's that hot. The best thing to do in that case is to sightsee early in the day and then late in the afternoon, like after 5pm. But if you can come in a cooler or even winter month, I think you'll enjoy it so much more!

On our April 24-26 visit, is it imperative that folks visit the Vatican (Sistine Chapel) first thing in the morning or could we get away with going after 9 or 10am? We do not think we could endure two hour lines. We could book a tour if it could help with timing.
@Romewise
@Romewise 3 ай бұрын
While Rome tourism has gotten even busier recently, April / May are still really peak season, and if you visit the Vatican at 9 or 10Am you will be contending with huge crowds. I suggest taking the Pristine Sistine tour with Walks of Italy. You will go in right at 8AM without waiting in a long line, you will have someone to guide you, and best of all, you will be able to take the shortcut from the Sistine Chapel into Saint Peter's Basilica, which, in my opinion, is worth the price of the tour alone.

There's never a bad time to visit Rome, but I generally visit in winter. The best time to visit is when the Italians are celebrating--anything. Christmas, New Year, Befana, Easter, Carnevale. You get to eat all the special foods that are prepared only for that particular celebration, but please don't tell anyone or it will be overcrowded all year long. 🤫

Ah yes, of course, the food aspect! I touched on that on this video regarding carnival which is around the corner. I love the sugary frappe and castagnole, which you only find this time of year!

See you in Rome Feb. 13 - 29! We're testing out your "low-crowd" theory which we've heard from many other locals on previous visits.

I hope it will be! As I mentioned in the video, lately towards the end of February, especially on weekends, it can be more crowded than it used to be - we have Six Nations Rugby, Valentine's Day, and Carnival. But mid-week, I think you'll find it less crowded. I hope you have a fabulous time in Rome!

Is mid to late March a good time? I hope so, because I’ve already booked. Hah
@Romewise

Well, mid-March is just before Easter this year, so it's going to start getting pretty busy. But just prepare for crowds, and book ahead for tickets you really want, like the Colosseum and Vatican. Hopefully you'll also get some nice weather! I missed when is the best time, you were speaking in circles, confusing video.

I meant for this video to showcase that winter is my favorite time to visit because there are fewer people, I find the light beautiful, I think it's cool to visit the sites like the Pantheon later in the day when it's already dark outside, there are no bugs etc. It was meant to be tongue in cheek. I also described how the best time where weather is concerned is spring and fall, but those are also the most crowded times. Sorry you found my video confusing.

@Romewise don't apologize. Your video was informative and not confusing at all. Some people just don't get tongue in cheek. My husband and I will be in Rome again next December. Ciao!
